Army Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka has revealed that the Army will fire its first rounds towards Kilinochchi by next week.

He expressed confidence that the Air Force will take over the rest of the area and will show the world whether it is Colombo or Kilinochchi that is waging war. The Army Commander expressed his gratitude to the media personnel and organisations for the support extended to encourage them and to show the real sistuation to the world. He said they are only four kilometres away from Kilinochchi and was confident that the media will fulfil their responsibility on behalf of the nation.
The Army Commander was addressing the launch of the book Wanni Hatana. The event was organised at the National Library Services Board Auditorium in Colombo yesterday. The book deals on the dangerous journey towards Kilinochchi from Silawatura in the Wanni. Tissa Ravindra Perera presented first copies of the book to the Army Commander, Air Force Chief Air Marshall Roshan Gunatilake and Director of the Civil Defence Force Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera. He had earlier authored two books on military operations.
Air Force Chief Roshan Gunatilake said Prabhakaran has a smaller area to hide. With the advancement of the troops they are obtaining more intelligence reports. They get information about the whereabouts of Prabhakaran and he would be traced soon. Civil Defence Force Director Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera said those who are attempting to discourage the soldiers and undermine their victories are terrorists.
Military Spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara, Naval Media Spokesman Comm. D.K.P. Dassanayake and Air Force Spokesman Wing Comm. Janaka Nanayakkara were among those present.

President Rajapakse has emphasised that next years national literary festival will be held in Kilinochchi
Participating in this years festival at the Narandeniya Central College grounds in Kamburupitiya today, the President opined it is the literates who can identify the pulse of the people. While guiding politicians, they should also take the lead in arraying the citizens to meet the national needs. Speaking further, the President said peace and prosperity of a country will ensure a golden era of literary arts. Some contributions could be made to world literature only by identifying the pulse of the countrys population. His responsibility is to grant the rights of Tamil literates, who were subject to terrorism. He noted that his governments aim was to ensure the rights of all civilians, liberating the country from terrorism. The 2008 National Literary Festival was organised under the guidance of Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. Ministers Dulles Alahapperuma, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and Provincial Minister Hemal Gunasekera were present.

The war heroes advancing in the North battling the terrorists have neared Kilinochchi, devastating LTTE strongholds..
The troops had already destroyed several LTTE strongholds entering Kilinochchi, after heavy fighting. They have already consolidated power in several areas in Kilinochchi. The 57th Division succeeded in liberating Uilankulam completely advancing East of Wellankulam. Soldiers of the 57th Division after heavy fighting captured Thunukkai. They are now advancing towards Kilinochchi shattering terrorist bastions. Heavy fighting is raging in the Mallawi area. The soldiers pointed out that the terrorists are experiencing another serious defeat by being deprived of the area.
In the meantime, our spherical representative Kasun Gunatilake reporting from the battlefront said the terrorists had caused hindrances to civilians in areas dominated under them in the North. The tigers are further retreating causing severe damage to property.

Aug 01, Colombo: Sri Lankan troops yesterday (July 31) crossed the Mannar-Kilinochchi boundary and entered LTTE's final stronghold in the Wanni, the district of Kilinochchi, the military said.
Defence Ministry said troops had crossed into the Kilinochchi district at an undisclosed point on the Mannar-Vavuniya frontline and the fall of next Tiger town, Vellankulam on the Mannar-Pooneryn (A-32) road along the northwestern coast is imminent.
Yesterday's operations in the Wanni killed 20 Tigers and injured more than thirty others, defense reports claimed.
Three fronts are advancing north ahead of combined Mannar-Vavuniya frontline into the Tiger stronghold of Kilinochchi.
Troops of Task Force 1 (TF-1) continue marching along the northwestern coast on the western edge of the frontline towards Vellankulam establishing control over a 5 Square kilometers area at Mundampiddi, town before Vellankulam last evening.
Troops of 57 Division are moving ahead in the middle towards the strategically important Tunukkai, a town that lies halfway on the Mankulam - Vellenkulam road which functions as a main supply route of Tigers between Wanni and the northwestern coast .
Meanwhile troops of Task Force 2 (TF-2) are moving along the eastern edge of the Mannar- Vavuniya combined front towards A-9 road.
Defense analysts however are concerned as to why the LTTE is silent about the latest military onslaught into Tiger territory. They sound caution that LTTE may be tactically withdrawing as done in the past in preparation for a major surprise attack on the troops entering into the unfamiliar territory.

The gallant soldiers after consolidating their positions in Pooneryn, have unveiled operations targetting Kilinochchi.
Accordingly, the 57th Division and Task Force I expanded their operations from one front. Troops of the 58th Division under Brig. Shavindra Silvas leadership have joined in operations to consolidate power in Kilinochchi after taking over Pooneryn and the A-32 Highway. The troops which have taken up positions at Paranthan in Kilinochchi, about 10 kilometres West of the A-9 Highway, are unleashing attacks with multi barrels and artilleries. Their strategy is to obstruct the PoonerynParanthan Road and march towards Paranthan Junction. The 58th Division is already one and half kilometres close to the B-69 PoonerynParanthan Road. Access to Mullaitivu and Elephant Pass can be gained from Paranthan Junction on the JaffnaKandy A-9 Highway. There is only 19 kilometres to Muhamalai from Elephant Pass. Troops of the 53rd and 55th Divisions are geared to advance towards Kilinochchi from Muhamalai. The 59th Division advancing from Welioya has expanded military operations towards Mullaitivu, liberating the Kumunamunai village.
