UNICEF: Rise in kidnappings in Central African Republic - 134 sec
PAOUA, Central African Republic, 20 June 2008 -- In the shade of the veranda, five-year-old Harouna Garga and his seven-year-old sister Beldo sit safely in their father's lap at the family compound in Paoua, north-west Central African Republic. Three years ago, however, their life was not so serene. The children's father, Souleimane Garga, recounts the events of 23 June 2005, when his family was attacked by bandits known as Zaraguinas. "It was two in the morning when they came. There were many of them and they knocked down the doors," says Mr. Garga as he points to the various bedroom doors facing the courtyard. "They had Kalashnikovs and the bullets came down like rain." Bandits killed the children's grandfather and their uncle. Mr. Garga was shot in the back. The Zaraguinas stole the family's valuables, including their cattle herd. Worst of all, they took Mr. Garga's wife and her one-week-old baby -- as well as Beldo and Harouna. Child Custody and Kidnappings - Sexist Islamic Family Law - 547 sec
-- Any children born to the wife will be considered Muslim. They will usually also be considered citizens of the father's country. -- The husband's permission is always needed for the children to leave an Islamic country despite the fact that the children will also have, for example, American citizenship. Foreign immigration authorities can be expected to enforce these regulations. The ability of U.S. consular officers to aid an American woman who wishes to leave the country with her children is very limited. -- The wife may be divorced by her husband at any time with little difficulty and without a court hearing. -- At a certain point in age, the children will come under the custody of the father or his family. -- In Islamic countries, the wife will need the permission of her husband to leave the country. http://www.international-divorce.com/d-islamic.htm http://www.expertlaw.com/library/family_law/islamic_custody-3.html

UNICEF: Calling for an end to kidnappings in CAR - 147 sec
NEW YORK CITY, United States - UNICEF is deeply concerned about reports of kidnappings and abduction of children in CAR as well as in other countries affected by violence such as Haiti, DR Congo and Iraq. These crimes are nearly always carried out with impunity. UNICEF is calling on governments to enact and enforce measures that provide a protective environment for children. "Governments have a responsibility to enforce measures that are in place to make sure that families and children are protected," says UNICEF Communication Office for Child Protection, Geoffrey Keele. "We are all responsible for the well-being of children." To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/car_44554.html

Mexico's kidnapping business - 11 Feb 08 - 172 sec
Kidnappings are big business in Mexico and the number of people being abducted is astonishing. Last year, the country averaged 900 kidnappings per day - that's about one kidnap victim every 90 seconds. Many Mexicans complain that the police are part of the problem, not the solution. In the first part of a special series, Al Jazeera's Franc Contreras looks at how Mexicans are coping in such a state of insecurity.

Living on a Prayer - Iraq - 730 sec
Feb 2007 Kidnappings and shootings have become part of everyday life for the Al Khatib family of Baghdad. Their story reveals the extent security has deteriorated. Omar al Khatib has no job, no savings and no ration cards for food. But it's the constant security threats that drive him to despair. His brother has been kidnapped by militias. "They called us and said 'your brother is with us and we want $200,000'". The ransom is well beyond their means so Omar doubts he will ever see his brother again. "We've put leaflets with his picture near the morgues. Maybe someone will find his body." Omar's cousin, Waleed, is now permanently disabled after being shot by gunmen. "I don't know why they shot me, I don't belong to any party". Waleed can't have the operation he urgently needs because the doctor has fled the country. Another cousin, Estebrak, was abducted by militias. "They shot me in my leg and face". The kidnappers stopped at several checkpoints but police refused to help him after seeing who his abductors were. He escaped after convincing his kidnappers he was a Shia but; "after what I saw, we've lost hope for the future".

NIGERIA: The mutilation of Niger Delta - 597 sec
In modern day Nigeria, a new turn of events has emerged, in the form of kidnapping innocent members of the populace. Whilst this pattern is deeply regrettable, it is clearly evident that the poor youths of the region, after decades of deprivation have found the ugly practice as a new way of taking a chunk out of what they have, for years surrendered to the benefit of every one in the country. This epic documentary, courtesy of Aljazeera TV clearly indicate that successive Nigerian Governments, including the current one appear not have awoken to the fact that a genuine desire to sooth the minds of these poor youths of Ogoni, as well as other such communities would and should begin with a task force for reconstruction and creating jobs, rather than the display of power. The courage of the Ogoni youths is heavily admired, despite the unacceptable practice of roguery and kidnappings, by a minority section of the community.

Narco Wars- Mexico - 1390 sec
October 2008 Mexicans are facing a horrifying increase in violence brought about by the governments decision to wage war on the powerful drug cartels. Each day sees more deaths and kidnaps, while corruption is endemic. The death toll so far this year is 4000, higher than Iraq. Around 4 people a day are kidnapped for ransom. Were assaulted every day, says one man, Mexico as a country can not guarantee our security. In Sinaloa, life is a daily roll call of decapitations, torturing and shootings of gangsters and innocents alike. A hysterical young man just witnessed the shooting of his sister point blank in the head. The next day, assassins on motorbikes executed two men in broad daylight. There are witnesses, but theyre too scared to talk. Its common belief that corrupt police are involved in the drugs trade and the kidnappings: "drug traffickers dont need to buy a minister to carry on his activities. They only have to buy the chief of police". While this report was in the making, a federal police officer at one point a member of the Anti-Kidnap team was arrested over the kidnapping and murder of a 14-year-old boy. It seems Mexicos president has a hard battle ahead of him. Last year American Congress gave him US$400 million to help fight the drug cartels but this amount is nothing compared to the money laundering from drug activity.

Alive in Baghdad - Pt. 1 Marwan Speaks about his Kidnapping - 338 sec
Visit http://www.aliveinbaghdad.org each monday for new videos about life in Iraq! Make a donation to support our work at http://www.aliveinbaghdad.org/donate/ Aside from death, abduction of a correspondent is just about the last thing anyone involved in a media organization wants to hear. On July 23rd, that is exactly what happened. Kidnappings have now become routine in Baghdad. Luckily Marwan was released approximately three days after his kidnapping. Unfortunately when Marwan was first kidnapped, we could not tell his story, due to his parent's request and fear for his safety. Today we bring you the first segment of a two part interview about his kidnapping and detention by one of Baghdad's militias, apparently the Mahdi Army. Marwan was kidnapped while shooting b-roll, that is supporting footage depicting life around Baghdad. It is an unfortunate reality that shooting footage on the streets of Baghdad is an incredibly dangerous prospect. Marwan had only been working for one week when he was kidnapped, he had not even received his ID card.

Afar Rebels (ARDUF) Claiming Responsibility for 5 Europeans - 536 sec
Rebels in the remote Afar region on the Ethiopian-Eritrean border have claimed responsibility for the kidnappings of five Europeans released last week in an interview on Eritrean state media (March 19 2007). Armed men claiming to be from the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (ARDUF) made the claim in a broadcast on Eritrean television late on Sunday, including the first pictures of the release of the European hostages. "The main reason we took the hostages is because the TPLF (Ethiopia) claims that ARDUF has been wiped out, and we needed to expose the regime's false propaganda and declare our existence," an unnamed ARDUF spokesperson said in Afar language. "ARDUF is still fighting and will go on fighting." The 20-minute interview included the first footage of the five European hostages being released last Tuesday in Eritrea. It showed the three men and two women shaking hands with and waving to a group of around a dozen armed men in desert military fatigues before being led away by Afar elders. The five were then shown boarding an Eritrean military helicopter, holding small rucksacks. The report made no mention of eight Ethiopian hostages captured in the northeast Ethiopian desert with the British embassy-linked group on March 1 and still missing. Eritrea has already said that the group was kidnapped by separatist rebel group ARDUF, which opposes the division of the Afar people among Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti. Eritrea has strongly rejected Ethiopian accusations that it masterminded the kidnapping. Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a bitter territorial war between 1998 and 2000 and are still deeply at odds over their border. Ethiopia on Saturday called for international help to obtain the release of the eight missing Ethiopians. source: http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=68&art_id=nw20070319134417898C158257
