Imagine! Kenya sings for India - 124 sec
Leading film-makers are seeking to change the way we think about other countries. This is one of a powerful series of films to be shown on Pangea Day, May 10, "the day the world comes together through film". See all six anthems. Then visit http://www.pangeaday.org and register your screening for May 10. It's time to imagine a different world. Here, set against the backdrops of Nairobi city and the beautiful landscape of Uhuru Park (Maasai country), a Kenyan choir sings the Indian national anthem. The director has chosen the Indian anthem because Kenya is home to a sizeable Indian population (including Sikhs & Jains also) of approximately 2.5 million, most of them descendants of the East African Railways labourers who were brought over by the British during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the British colonialists ruled Kenya and the rest of the East African region. Global food prices affecting families in Kenya - 3 Jun 08 - 74 sec
The UN secretary-general has urged world leaders gathering at a summit on food security to make the "hard decisions" necessary to bring down soaring global food prices. The price of an average food basket is spiraling across the world. In Kenya, the post election killing spree disrupted farming and caused food prices to rise. Al Jazeera reports on the Nya-gahs, a middle class family living in the capital Nairobi, struggling to put food on the table.

Obama's Village - Kenya - 637 sec
August 2008 Thrust into the spotlight and aiming to become one of the world's most powerful people, it is hard to imagine that Barak Obama's roots lie in what can only be described as an extremely humble Kenyan village. Here we meet the family members and characters that have served to shape Barak's early life. Mama Sara, Barak's grandmother, tells us "Barack is a son of this village. He's a very kind man. He loves development. He likes peace and he loves me." We also learn of the hopes and aspirations of the villagers, along with the future developments in Kenya that the senator may bring.

Safari in Kenya - 327 sec
Here is a video clip from my safari in Kenya. The video was filmed at three locations: Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Samburu. I used a Canon ZR-20 miniDV camera and edited and mixed with Apple's iMovie. The video begins with a sunrise hot air balloon ride and transitions to highlights from the trip. The beautiful song is Serengeti (Bliss Mix) by Infernal.

Authors@Google: Kenya Hara - 3209 sec
Designer Kenya Hara visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "Designing Design." This event took place on September 29, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series. Representing a new generation of designers in Japan, Kenya Hara pays tribute to his mentors, using long overlooked Japanese icons and images in much of his work. In Designing Design, he impresses upon the reader the importance of "emptiness" in both the visual and philosophical traditions of Japan, and its application to design, made visible by means of numerous examples from his own work: Hara for instance designed the opening and closing ceremony programs for the Nagano Winter Olympic Games 1998. In 2001, he enrolled as a board member for the Japanese label MUJI and has considerably molded the identity of this successful corporation as communication and design advisor ever since. Kenya Hara, alongside Naoto Fukasawa one of the leading design personalities in Japan, has also called attention to himself with exhibitions such as "Re-Design: The Daily Products of the 21st Century" of 2000. Kenya Hara (born 1958) is a graphic designer, Professor at the Art University Musashino and communication advisor for MUJI.

Kenya: The Rift - 1319 sec
Mar 2008 The violence that erupted after Kenya's election left over a thousand dead and hundreds of thousands more homeless. Much of it appeared pre-mediated. Can a peace accord now last? "The ODM dealers planned and executed ethnic cleansing", states government spokesman Alfred Mutua. "Those people are just as bad as Milosevic". In response, opposition leader Raila Odinga predicts "only doom for this country", if President Kibaki continues to rely on the hardliners around him.
