| | Quinte Grannies for Africa's 2009 calender campaign - 453 sec
From the name of the group, you wouldn't expect Quinte Grannies for Africa, a non-profit organization based out of Belleville, Ont., to be promoting a nude calender.
But for this group of over 50 women who organizing fundraising campaigns to benefit the Grandmothers to Grandmothers project that gives money to the grandmothers in Africa caring for the children orphaned by AIDS, nothing seems like too much to handle, and courage is never comparable to that displayed by grandmothers in Africa.
Claire Vilela, the granny who proposed the calender project, said it wasn't too difficult to get 12 women on board and ready to strip down to their birthday suits - until the actual moment came to do so.
That, Vilela says, is where photographer Bob House came in.
"Bob House really made the whole process easier, and made it comfortable for the women as they tried to decide just how much skin was tasteful," Vilela says.
For those grannies participating in the project, the courage to bare it all came from thinking about what the grandmothers in Africa do on a daily basis.
"When I think about trying to feed eight children everyday before school," says Mieke Thorne, Miss February. "I couldn't do it. I know I couldn't do it."
Dorothy Davies-Flindall agrees. She said the fact the calender would raise funds and awareness is why she got on board.
"In the last week alone I have been asked to speak at three different places," she says.
Davies-Flindall says she thinks the buzz about the controversial calender is also creating buzz about the Grannies' cause.
Vilela says that is precisely why the grannies chose this project.
"It will fuel conversation," Vilela says.
