It was only a few decades ago that ancient Nepal opened its borders. Until then, due to the command of the ruling Gurkha Dynasty the 'Home of the Divine' was totally isolated.
In the heart of the city is Durbar Square in which the country's royalty resided until 1908 and also where the region's most important festivals take place.
The Shiva Parvati Temple dates back to the early years of the Shah Dynasty and its five sectioned, portal-like frame contains inscriptions that are thought to be the oldest in the Nepalese language. The large Jagannath Temple is dedicated to the god, Krishna, and to fend off the prudish Goddess of Lightning sexual images adorn the edge of the roof.
Built above an impressive array of steps the mighty Talejk Temple overshadows each of the other temples. The architecture of this 'mountain temple' emphasises the unique importance of the goddess Shiva.
Kumari Chowk is the residence of the living goddess Kumari. For this role a young girl is duly selected and is disallowed from leaving the palace until puberty, her task being to affirm the king his power.
The customs of the people in this 'Kingdom on the Roof of the World' may seem strange to those from beyond its borders but this land of both jungle and everlasting snow has developed according to its own rich traditions and beliefs.

A day after signing a historic agreement with the ruling alliance in Nepal, Maoists rebels faced a protest in front of their office in Lalitpur (Kathmandu Valley). Protestors, mainly a few dozen residents of Lalitipur district, had gathered in Kupandole, near a bridge that separates Kathmandu from Lalitpur, and stopped the vehicular movement on the road that goes from the front of the office. They had a complain: rebels were forcing the residents of the city to feed their comrades who have arrived in Kathmandu from different parts of the country to take part in a Mass Rally scheduled for Friday, Nov 10, 2006. Within an hour or so, about two hundred Maoist cadres from four casinos in Kathmandu came and flushed out the protestors and resumed the traffic movement as government police quietly watched. This video was filmed in Kathmandu, if you didn't get that after watching it you should check yourself in to some sort of learning specialist. There are bad guys and good guys (Nepali/Bollywood style). The protagonists are the ones singing and dancing and the antagonists are wearing black and chasing them. The plot was supposed to be a bit more complex but since we only had a 100,000-dollar budget we were not able to do everything we had initially planned. The beginning of the song is in English and the rap and traditional part are sung in Nepali. A comment on the stunts - the real actors played in the death-defyingly dangerous motorcycle stunts. Real razors were used in the shaving scene. We The Curfew Crew hope that this song leaves you with some idea of what to do whilst in Kathmandu... No animals were injured in the making of this film but one wig was utterly destroyed.
