KISS FanCon95' Ep78pt8 KASR VIDEO - 507 sec
Larry & Steven being the ultimate Phoenix KISS fans host this special edition and recount thier experiences at the KISS 1995 Convention in Arizona. Also featuring some convention KISS led sing-a-longs and other "backstage" type footage. Kasrvnotebook: Two more highly successful studio albums were released in less than a year—Rock and Roll Over (November 11, 1976) and Love Gun (June 30, 1977). A second live album, Alive II, was released on November 29, 1977. All three albums were certified platinum upon or soon after their release. Between 1976 and 1978, Kiss earned $17.7 million from record royalties and music publishing. A 1977 Gallup poll named Kiss the most popular band in America. In Japan, Kiss performed five sold-out shows at Budokan Hall, breaking the previous record of four held by The Beatles. The first of what is now many Kiss greatest hits albums, Double Platinum, was issued on April 2, 1978. This double album included many remixed versions of their hits, as well as "Strutter '78," a re-recorded version of one of the group's signature songs. Per Neil Bogart's request, the song was played in a style similar to the then-popular disco music. During this period, Kiss merchandise became a substantial source of income for the group. Some of the products released included a pair of comic books issued by Marvel (the first one of which contained ink mixed with actual blood donated by the group), a pinball machine, Kiss dolls, "Kiss Your Face Makeup" kits, Halloween masks, board games, and many other pieces of memorabilia. Membership in the Kiss Army, the band's fan club, was in the six figures. Between 1977 and 1979, worldwide merchandise sales (in-store and on tour) reached an estimated $100 million. for more info: http://www.kissonline.com ASU Student Radio is celebrating it's 25th year being the Sun Devil's Original Alternative! FREEDY JOHNSTON Interview Ep73pt3 KASR VIDEO - 481 sec
ASU's student radio Annual live concert and this it's a big line-up of local and national acts all for Charity! This years' headliner: FREEDY JOHNSTON and interviewd by Gayle! Kasrvnotebook: Johnston's first album, "The Trouble Tree" was released in 1990. Johnston sold some of his family's farmland to finance the recording of his second album, Can You Fly (an event he wrote about in a song on that album, "Trying To Tell You I Don't Know"). Johnston followed up with his 1994 major label debut This Perfect World, which received rave reviews and led to Rolling Stone naming him "songwriter of the year." He has contributed songs to the soundtracks for movies including Kingpin, Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, and Kicking and Screaming. Johnston and fellow musicians Jay Moran, James "Pie" Cowan, Duke Erikson, and Butch Vig perform occasional shows as a covers band called "The Know-It-All Boyfriends." Vig put the ensemble together for his brother's Christmas party, and it proved to be so much fun that they decided to keep going. Johnston's latest release is a covers album titled My Favorite Waste of Time. It includes selections from Tom Petty, Paul McCartney, Matthew Sweet and The Hollies. He is working on a double album called Rain on the City that is slated to come out in 2008. for more info: http://www.freedyjohnston.com Kasrvnotebook2:This year's charity: The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a non-profit organization that grants wishes to children (2.5 years to 18 years old) with life-threatening medical conditions. Make-A-Wish originated in Phoenix, Arizona in 1980, where a seven year old boy, Chris Greicius was hospitalized with leukemia. The Arizona Department of Public Safety, hospital workers and members of the community teamed up and were able to grant his 'wish': to become a police officer for one day. Ample media coverage led to the founding of a permanent charity organization, using Greicius's case as a model. for more info: http://www.wish.org ASU Student Radio is celebrating it's 25th year being the Sun Devil's Original Alternative! Scottsdale Ep69 pt1 KASR VIDEO - 520 sec
Bobby Diablo and Greg Mickey host from the ASU Kerr Cultural Arts Center located in the most rootin-tootin-ritzy-rich wild west town of Scottsdale and discuss baseball! (come on girls: what else could 2 guys possibly talk about) Also stopping in for 30 seconds is DURAN DURAN discussing cocaine and the temptuous TRACI LORDS ode to James Bond! Kasrvnotebook: Duran Duran was created by Nick Rhodes (keyboards) and John Taylor (bass), with the later addition of Roger Taylor (drums), Andy Taylor (guitar), and Simon Le Bon (lead vocals); none of the Taylors are related. The group has never disbanded, but the line-up changed to include guitarist Warren Cuccurullo from 1989 to 2001, and drummer Sterling Campbell from 1989 to 1991. The reunion of the original five members in the early 2000s created a stir among music media and the band's fans. Andy Taylor has since left the band once more. They were the most commercially successful of the New Romantic bands and a leading band in the MTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of the United States. During the past three decades they have placed 21 singles in the Billboard Hot 100 and 30 in the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart, and have sold more than 85 million records. Kasrvnotebookpage2: Traci Lords (born Nora Louise Kuzma on May 7, 1968), also known as Traci Elizabeth Lords and Tracy Lords, is an American film actress, producer, film director, writer and singer. She first achieved notoriety for her underage appearances in pornographic films and Penthouse magazine (she was around 16 years old in her first film), later becoming a television and B-movie actress. 1,000 Fires is the first and only music album by singer and multi-instrumentalist, Traci Lords which was released in 1995. It became a surprise hit album after the #1 hit, "Control" became popular in both the U.S. and the U.K. An Instrumental version of the song "Control" was used in 1995 as part of the soundtrack to the Mortal Kombat movie. The albums highlights include, "Outlaw Lover", "Good-N-Evil", "Fly", "I Want You", "Say Something" and, "Okey Dokey." It is currently out of print. Kasrvnotebookpage3: Kerr Clutural Center: Louise Lincoln Kerr was born April 25, 1892 in Ohio. She was the eldest child of John C. Lincoln, founder of the Lincoln Electric Company and one of America's greatest inventors. At a young age, Louise, became very fond of music. She studied music in New York City and attended Barnard College and Columbia University. Throughout her life, Louise Kerr had a dream -- to create an artist colony where established and emerging musicians, artists and writers could come together, practice their craft and learn from each other. In the late 1940s, the first colony structure was built in Scottsdale, a spacious five--room adobe home where she lived. Eventually, a performance hall, dubbed "The Studio", began to take shape. Adorned with a tile roof, massive hand--hewn beams, hand--forged wrought--iron chandeliers and railings, and beautifully crafted handmade doors and bookcases (made by Mrs. Kerr's friend, Tucson artist Charles W. Bolsius); the two adobe buildings reflected the classic Southwestern architectural style Mrs. Kerr had grown to admire. Mrs. Kerr died December 10, 1977 in Cottonwood, Arizona at her beloved ranch, which is now the home and studio of her friend, artist John Waddell. Her death was noted in papers throughout the state with such headlines as "She Also Pioneered", "Patron of the Arts", "Music Loses a Friend" and "Grand Lady of Music". BIOHAZARD Profile Ep43pt2 KASR VIDEO - 537 sec
Featuring an artist EPK profile and their State of the World Address! The titans of Brooklyn metaldom: BIOHAZARD! Kasrvnotebook: Biohazard was a band originally based out of Brooklyn, New York. They are acknowledged as one of the earliest bands to fuse hardcore punk and heavy metal with elements of hip hop music. The band formed in 1987 in Brooklyn. The original lineup consisted of bassist/vocalist Evan Seinfeld, guitarist Bobby Hambel, and drummer Anthony Meo. Guitarist/vocalist Billy Graziadei joined the band soon after. Their first demo tape, released in 1988, caused a stir with journalists who felt that the band's lyrics displayed certain fascist and white supremacist views, despite the fact that Seinfeld himself was Jewish. Accusations of racism in their music were strenuously denied by the band, but in later interviews, Seinfeld and Graziadei explained that it had all been a publicity stunt to win over the band Carnivore and their fans. Eventually, the songs in question were no longer played or even mentioned, and the band began preaching message of tolerance and anti-racism. After the release of their demo, Anthony Meo left the band and drummer Danny Schuler stepped in to replace him. A second demo tape followed in 1989. While never really considering themselves a hardcore band, Biohazard often found themselves sharing stages with bands associated with the New York hardcore scene, such as the Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front. They also shared stages with New Jersey hardcore band Mucky Pup quite often and a friendship between the two bands developed. Mucky Pup became a strong supporter of Biohazard and often booked them as an opening act, but many of the clubs would refuse to let Biohazard play, thinking the shows would lead to violence. As a result, Mucky Pup would resort to sneaking them on stage to perform a few songs before their own set. State of the World Address, this album was produced by Ed Stasium in Los Angeles and contained the single "How It Is" featuring Sen-Dog from Cypress Hill, for which a video was also shot. During their 1994 tour, the band made an appearance on the second stage at the Monsters of Rock festival held at Castle Donington. State of the World Address went on to sell over 1,000,000 copies, and Rolling Stone magazine selected the Biohazard logo as the best logo of the year. This was the last Biohazard album with Bobby Hambel, who left due to differences with the rest of the band. Hambel spent time in White Devil, also featuring members of the Cro-Mags, before seemingly leaving the music business entirely. The band recorded their fourth studio album, Mata Leao, as a three piece in 1995. It was produced with the help of Dave Jerden. For the 1996 Mata Leao Tour, the band hired former Helmet guitarist Rob Echeverria. Also in 1996, Biohazard played on the Ozzfest mainstage alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Slayer, Danzig, Fear Factory, and Sepultura. While touring Europe in support of the Mata Leao album, the band recorded their Hamburg, Germany, show for their first live album, No Holds Barred (Live in Europe), which was released in 1997 through their former label, Roadrunner Records. for more info: http://www.biohazard.com "Don't expect a lot from this show." Featuring the 2nd part of the second stop on the Great KASR V Pacific Rim Road Trip: Anchorage, Alaska! Home of Bobby Diablo. VJ/DJ Bobby Diablo, with Padre Diablo in tow gives you a personalized tour of Anchorage, Alaska. TC The Alaskan Renaissance Man aka Master of All Trades stops by and gives some input on the local Alaskan music scene, film history, politics, Yoda Imitations, Snoop Dogg and more! Also the Cuban Guy says hello! KASRV Point of Interest: One of the most famous bars that Bobby D and TC discuss is: Chilkoot Charlie's! Koot's first opened its doors on January 1, 1970 in what had been The Alibi Club. "Koot's," as it is affectionately called by locals, began as a neighborhood watering hole with a live piano bar. The bar was very limited in size then, occupying only the part of the building that is now the South Long Bar. Customers flocked to Chilkoot Charlie's to enjoy its Alaska atmosphere and outrageous entertainment. The costumed bartenders (Gordon included) provided laughs by the ton. A favorite was one of Gordon's characters called Rocky the Flying M*ther F*cker. Gordon would wear a World War One infantryman's uniform, a leather pilot's helmet, and scarf. Customers howled with laughter at the non-stop antics. Music was provided by the bar's original band - The Rinky-Dinks, and later on by a piano player by the name of Mr. Whitekeys. Mr. Whitekeys now runs The Fly-By-Night Club here in Anchorage. It was he who coined our logo "We cheat the other guy and pass the savings on to you!" Live bands come from all over Alaska and the United States to perform at the world famous Chilkoot Charlie's. Chilkoot's has been host or co-host to such bands and performers as: Metallica, Ted Nugent, Bad Company, Bryan Adams, Quiet Riot, Great White, Joe Satriani, The Steve Miller Band, Crosby Stills and Nash, Blues Traveler, White Zombie, Bon Jovi, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ratt, Journey, Ozzy Osbourne, Celicio & Kapono, The Beach Boys, Blue Oyster Cult, The Romantics, The Doobie Brothers, Eddie Money, Megadeth, Aerosmith, Styx, Van Halen, Cinderella, Candlebox, Warrent, Cracker, Berlin, Greenday, and the Scorpions just to name a few. KORN Interview Ep76 KASR VIDEO - 412 sec
Bobby Diablo interviews the guys of KORN as they have come to ROCK Tempe's Club Rio! Kasrvnotebook: Korn, sometimes typeset as KoЯn, is a band from Bakersfield, California, and are credited with creating and popularizing the nu metal genre. Along with other bands at the time, they have also inspired many nu metal and alternative metal bands throughout the mid 1990s and early 2000s. The band's catalogue consists of nine consecutive debuts in the top ten of the Billboard 200, including a compilation album, Greatest Hits Vol.1, and their untitled eighth album, released on July 31, 2007. To date, Korn has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, including 16.5 million in the U.S., whilst earning six Grammy nominations—two of which they have won. Korn can be credited for creating the nu metal genre, though the group has often said they don't like to be put in that category themselves. People have often dubbed you as the first "nu metal" band. What do you think about that? " We've spawned a lot of clones, but let me explain... Well, I hate the nu metal term. We have always just been a band that rocks. We didn't like when people called us a metal band, we are just Korn. People just use these terms when they cannot describe something, but nu metal... when so many bands started making music that sounded like us, that is when nu metal was born. We don't have anything to do with it for real, I feel. I wouldn't wanna call Red Hot Chili Peppers a funk band, and we are not metal or nu metal, we are Korn. That is just a term that doesn't mean anything. - Jonathan Davis " for more info: http://www.korn.com ASU Student Radio is celebrating it's 25th year being the Sun Devil's Original Alternative! pt2 COVERDALE-PAGE Profile Ep19 KASR VIDEO - 551 sec
This is Part 2 from an David Coverdale and Jimmy Page Project EPK that aired on the Metalworks program. Kasrvmetalworksnotebook: Coverdale-Page is a collaboration team featuring Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page. They released one album (Coverdale-Page in 1993) and four singles; "Pride and Joy", "Shake My Tree", "Take Me For A Little While", and "Over Now". James Patrick "Jimmy" Page, OBE (born 9 January 1944) is an English guitarist, composer and record producer. He began his career as a studio session guitarist in London and was subsequently a member of The Yardbirds, from late 1966 to 1968, before founding the English rock band Led Zeppelin. Page has been described as "unquestionably one of the all-time most influential, important, and versatile guitarists and songwriters in rock history." In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Page #9 in their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, as a member of The Yardbirds and also as a member of Led Zeppelin. Trivia: Page would take a guitar to school each day and have it confiscated and handed back to him at 4.00 pm. He was interested in science and had an interview for a job as a Laboratory Assistant, but he chose to leave school to pursue music instead and after brief stints backing Beat poet Royston Ellis and singer Red E. Lewis, Page was asked by singer Neil Christian to join his band The Crusaders. Page toured with Christian for approximately two years and later played on several of his records, including the November 1962 single, "The Road to Love". pt2 GALACTIC COWBOYS Interview Ep26 KASR VIDEO - 209 sec
Bobby Diablo hosts this part which features the second half of an interview with the band GALACTIC COWBOYS at The Library in Phoenix!!! Kasrvnotebook: Galactic Cowboys was formed in 1989 in Houston, Texas by bassist Monty Colvin and singer drummer Alan Doss, after being together in The Awful Truth. After that band broke up, they added singer Ben Huggins and guitarist Dane Sonnier. In 1990, the band was signed to DGC and released their eponymous debut album in 1991. Despite some favorable criticism, the band was ignored by the label due to the success of Nirvana's Nevermind during that same time. After poor sales and some touring, they returned to the studio and released Space In Your Face in 1993. Space was the band's break into the general market. The album garnered some minor hits for the band with "If I Were A Killer" and "I Do What I Do", both of which received regular airplay at MTV and the now-defunct radio station ZROCK respectively. At this point, the band was dropped from DGC, parted ways with manager Sam Taylor, and guitarist Dane Sonnier left the band. After briefly breaking up, the band reorganized with Wally Farkas on guitars and a new deal with Metal Blade Records, and released their third album, Machine Fish, in 1996. That same year they also released an EP titled Feel The Rage that included some original songs, two covers and two live tracks. In 1997, they followed with The Horse That Bud Bought which was a minor departure into a toned-down style. At this point, the band recorded what many fans regard as their masterpiece, At The End Of The Day in 1998. This album marked a return to the heavier style featured in previous releases. However, two weeks before the album's release Alan Doss decided to leave the band. Erick Tatuaka was hired to fill in for Doss during their subsequent tour, but was not a member of the band. In 2000 the band announced the release of their last album titled Let It Go. The album included lead vocal contributions from all members. Most of the drumming duties were handled by Jerry Gaskill (King's X), a good friend of the band. As of 2007, the former members of the band continue to be active in the music scene. for more info: http://www.galacticcowboys.com KASR VIDEO was a weekly 2 hour offshoot of the Arizona State University's original alternative student radio station that aired on public access in Phoenix. Tokyo Ep65 pt5 KASR VIDEO - 574 sec
Bobby Diablo & Manic Mike stow away aboard a 747 Jumbo and hook up with Miami Tallahasse for a tour of Tokyo, Japan! Diablo is searching for universal truths and Manic is seeking out a Geisha. Poor Miami has to put up with the both of them! More of the Great KASR V Pacific Rim Road Trip: Tokyo, Japan! Home of Miami Tallahasse. KASRV Point of Interest: Rail is the primary mode of transportation in Tokyo. Tokyo has the most extensive urban railway network in the world, including surface lines. There are 101 passenger train lines serving Tokyo, and 18 more serving the metropolitan area (首都圏)but not Tokyo, for a total of 119 serving Greater Tokyo. Despite this vastness, the network is still being expanded. Because people cannot make sense of the all inclusive Tokyo area rail map due to its vastness, each operator makes its own map, with key transfer points. Tourists are usually shown the subway map only as a means of simplicity. Rail in Japan is often extremely crowded, with people pushing their way in when completely full. Most lines in Tokyo are privately owned and operated, with the exception of Toei subway lines (run directly by the Tokyo Metropolitan government). Rail and subway lines are highly integrated and dense; commuter trains from the suburbs continue directly into the subway network on many lines, often emerging on the other side of the city to serve another company's surface line at major stations. It is estimated some 20 million people use rail as their primary means of transport (not trips) in the metropolitan area daily. Shinjuku Station is the busiest train station in the world by passenger throughput. As a comparison, Germany has 10 million daily train riders in the whole nation, the highest usage of any country in Europe. East Japan Railway Company, or JR East, is the largest passenger railway company in the world. It operates throughout the Greater Tokyo area (as well as the rest of northeastern Honshū). In addition to operating some long-haul Shinkansen ("bullet train" lines, except Tōkaidō Shinkansen operated by JR Central), JR East operates Tokyo's largest railway network, including the Yamanote Line that encircles the center of Tokyo, and commuter lines radiating from the city to its suburbs. These include the Keihin-Tōhoku Line between Saitama and Yokohama, the Chūō Line to western Tokyo, and the Sōbu Line to Chiba. The Keiyō serves nearby parts of Chiba. The Yokohama, Tōkaidō, and Yokosuka Lines serve the southwestern parts of the area. Many additional lines form a network outside the center of the city. Among these are the Hachikō, Itsukaichi, Jōban, Jōetsu, Kawagoe, Musashino, Ōme, Negishi, Nambu, Sagami, Takasaki, and Tsurumi Lines. In total, JR alone operates 23 lines within the Greater Tokyo area. JR East is also the majority stockholder in the Tokyo Monorail, one of the world's most commercially successful monorail lines. BLIND MELON Profile Ep81pt3 KASR VIDEO - 514 sec
This is an artist EPK profile of Blind Melon which is an alternative rock band, whose most notable work dates from 1992 to 1995, and ceased with the death of lead vocalist Shannon Hoon. The band reformed with the new lead vocalist Travis Warren in 2006. Blind Melon assembled in California, with members hailing from Indiana, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania. The band signed to Capitol Records in 1991 and recorded an unreleased demo. The band gained buzz from vocalist Hoon's association with Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose, and Hoon's back-up vocals on several Guns N' Roses tracks on 1991's Use Your Illusion albums, most notably "Don't Cry." The band's self-titled debut album, produced by Rick Parashar (Pearl Jam), contained 13 songs spanning a wide sonic palate. The aggressive dual-lead guitars and shouted vocals of "Soak The Sin" and "Tones of Home" evoked heavy metal and classic rock; "Time's" spacious bridge and ambient, winding outro shared commonalities with Grateful Dead-style improvisational music; while heavily acoustic songs "Change" and "No Rain" hinted at pop and folk influences. The album sold poorly until the No Rain single became a smash success, along with a popular video which featured the "Bee Girl" (played by Heather DeLoach). Thematically, the video suggested a social outcast eventually finding a supportive community through trial and error. Subsequently, Blind Melon went platinum four times. After opening for Neil Young, Lenny Kravitz, Soundgarden and The Rolling Stones, Blind Melon's own tour was cut short due to Hoon's escalating drug abuse. In 1994, the band began recording their second album, Soup, in New Orleans with producer Andy Wallace. The album was released in 1995, and predominantly featured shorter songs with a more conventional "alternative rock" approach. The lyrics to "St. Andrew's Fall" referenced a suicide jump, while "New Life" discussed the forthcoming birth of a child. "Mouthful of Cavities" featured backing vocals from Jena Kraus, who subsequently recorded a solo record with Christopher Thorn and Brad Smith. Despite the more contemporary sound, the album failed to meet sales expectations. In 1995, Blind Melon also contributed a version of the song "Out On The Tiles" to the Encomium tribute album to Led Zeppelin, as well as a promotional CD with a cover of the School House Rock song "Three is a Magic Number." Against the advice of Hoon's drug counselor, Blind Melon went on tour in support of Soup. Hoon was found dead of a cocaine overdose on October 21, 1995 in New Orleans. The remaining members released Nico (named for Hoon's daughter, only 13 weeks old when her father died) in 1996, with the profits going to a program that helps musicians with drug and alcohol addiction. Nico contained unreleased songs from the Soup recording sessions, as well as other songs often recorded with only partial instrumentation. The closing track, "Letters from a Porcupine", was recorded as a telephone message left by Hoon on a bandmate's answering machine. Nico included covers of Steppenwolf and John Lennon songs. After briefly attempting to continue, Blind Melon officially disbanded on March 4, 1999, and the various members went on to other projects. for more info: http://www.blindmelon.com ASU Student Radio is celebrating it's 25th year being the Sun Devil's Original Alternative! 2nd J Interview WHITE ZOMBIE Ep29 KASR VIDEO - 487 sec
Featuring the 2nd KASR Video interview with J from the band WHITE ZOMBIE backstage at Desert Sky Pavillion! Kasrvnotebook: Sean Yseult, after the breakup of White Zombie, joined the surf rock band The Famous Monsters, and (as of early 2001) left the horror-themed New Orleans-based band Rock City Morgue. She is currently preparing for an upcoming tour with The Cramps John Tempesta continued his musical relationship with Rob Zombie after the White Zombie breakup, drumming for Zombie on his first two solo albums, Hellbilly Deluxe and The Sinister Urge. He is no longer with Zombie and currently plays for the Rob Zombie-esque band Scum of the Earth with his brother, Powerman 5000 guitarist Mike Tempesta, and ex-Rob Zombie guitarist Mike Riggs, and has recently toured with Testament (as shown on Testament's DVD, Live In London). On February 14, 2006, he was hired as the new drummer for The Cult, before which, he played with Helmet. J. produced records for stoner rock band Fu Manchu and New York City rockers Puny Human, as well as lending his guitar skills to a few other bands after the breakup of White Zombie. While Rob Zombie has mostly kept the image of his former band, fans of both White Zombie's and Rob Zombie's music have noted significant musical differences between them, notably the absence of the heavy bass and lead guitar that characterised White Zombie's musical style. Multiple layers and numerous samples are not used as often due to legal issues as the band gained mainstream recognition. In July 2006, original members Tom Five and Ivan de Prume reunited to perform with Ivan's band Healer for several concerts in Southern California for The Vans Warped Tour. Ivan continues to write and record music with Healer, a middle eastern infused metal band and recording, producing, and engineering for special projects. Sony's Ghost Rider score featured Ivan's drums and percussion. "J" aka Jay Noel Yuenger: Through his mother, a classical soprano and voice teacher, he was exposed to music early, played piano and sang in children's choirs. Growing up in the diverse Hyde Park neighborhood on Chicago's south side (one of the only truly integrated neighborhoods in the city, rich in culture and history and home to the University Of Chicago), he heard soul, jazz, folk, and of course, the electric blues. He attended Kenwood Academy. His father, a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, was posted as bureau chief in several cities and J. lived in Washington DC, Moscow, and London before he was 12 years old. As a teenager, his interests quickly progressed from pop to hard rock to hardcore punk. He started playing guitar and played a small part in the early 80s Chicago hardcore scene by forming the teen punk band Rights Of The Accused in 1982. They released a 7" EP ( " Innocence" ) in 1983 and opened for several noteworthy groups including Minor Threat, MDC, the Big Boys, Flipper, and Discharge. He left the band ( who would go on to release several albums ) in 1985, tried college, and by 1987 had moved to New York City. After several abortive tries at forming groups in New York and New Jersey, he met the members of White Zombie in early 1989 and auditioned successfully to join the group as guitar player. The band released the previously recorded "Make Them Die Slowly" on Caroline Records, toured the US and Europe and recorded the " God Of Thunder " 12" EP ( also issued on Caroline ). In 1990 the group signed to Geffen records and recorded their major label debut '"La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1", which eventually went on to sell over 2 million copies. During the next 5 years the band was almost constantly on tour, pausing only to record the triple platinum-selling " Astro-Creep: 2000 " . They also contributed songs to various movie sountracks and compilation albums and ended up selling over 6 million records worldwide. Since the official disbandment of White Zombie in 1997, J. has lived in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York and has worked as a recording engineer and record producer. He currently lives in New Orleans and is building a recording studio that will open in 2007. Bobby Diablo hosts the "Monster in my Pants" edition with Greg Mickey and CM Vaughn! ZAKK WYLDE Interview pt2Ep44 KASR VIDEO - 428 sec
The incredible Zakk Wylde stops by with his guitar to the MetalWorks radio show and have a few beers with Bobby Diablo and Manic Mike. Kasrvnotebook: Wylde's then-girlfriend (now wife) Barbaranne heard Ozzy was looking for a new guitarist on the Howard Stern radio show. While playing at a local gig, a photographer (Mark Weiss) spoke to Wylde urging him to audition for Ozzy, and offered to send a press kit along to Osbourne; Wylde, who at the time was working at a local Getty gas station, decided he had nothing to lose. Ozzy dismissed the tape among thousands of others as "just another Randy Rhoads clone". But a couple of weeks later, Randy Castillo, Ozzy's drummer at the time, told him he'd found a great guitarist from New Jersey. Wylde recalled how he received a phone call from Sharon Osbourne (thinking it was one of his friends' mother) telling him there was a ticket for him to fly out and audition for Ozzy. Wylde has said that he was hired on the spot before even playing, while he was still tuning his guitar. The truth of this is unknown as Wylde is known for joking with interviewers. The first material he released with Osbourne was No Rest for the Wicked in 1988. Zakk Wylde's guitar-playing style is characterized by his use of pinch harmonics and wide/aggressive vibrato. His guitar soloing technique is usually characterized by use of the minor pentatonic scale, playing rapid box-pattern licks using strict alternate-picking, creating a very distinctive, choppy style of playing. Another notable feature of Wylde's playing is his liberal use of "chicken pickin' ," a technique which is usually associated with country music, and which is (comparatively) rarely seen in heavy metal; a technique he has stated as being picked up from watching Albert Lee. for more info: http://www.zakkwylde.com "Don't expect a lot from this show." MOTHER LOVE BONE Profile Ep11 CMJ: KASR VIDEO - 458 sec
This is an EPK Profile that aired on the CMJ new music show highlighting some behind the scenes footage of the Seattle alternative band: Mother Love Bone. Some members of this band later founded PEARL JAM. Kasrvnotebook: Mother Love Bone was a Seattle based rock band active from 1988 to 1990. Frontman Andrew Wood's personality and compositions helped to catapult the group to the top of the burgeoning late 1980s/early 1990s Seattle music scene. Tragically, Wood died only days before the release of their debut album Apple thus ending the group's hopes of success. Although Mother Love Bone is to this day remembered by many as a very talented band in its own right, its legacy, for some, is overshadowed by Wood's death and the bands that its former members would later form. Mother Love Bone was established in 1988 by ex-Green River members Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament and Bruce Fairweather, ex-Malfunkshun frontman Andrew Wood and ex-Ten Minute Warning and Skin Yard drummer Greg Gilmore. Initially the group was formed in 1987 out of covers outfit Lords of the Wasteland which featured Wood, Gossard, Ament and Malfunkshun drummer Regan Hagar. By early 1988 the band had added Fairweather, replaced Hagar with drummer Greg Gilmore and changed their name to Mother Love Bone. This new lineup quickly set about recording and playing area shows and by late 1988 had become one of Seattle's more promising bands. In early 1989 the band signed to Polygram subsidiary Mercury Records. As part of their contract Polygram also created the Stardog Records imprint exclusively for the band. In March of that year the group issued their debut EP Shine becoming the first of the new crop of Seattle bands to have a release on a major label. The record sold well and rapidly increased the hype surrounding the band. In late 1989 the group returned to the studio (this time in San Francisco) to record their debut album Apple. Despite some initial difficulties, the record was on-time for its projected March 1990 release. By this point interest in the band had hit a fever pitch and it seemed destined that the band were going to make it big. Only days before the release of Apple, however, frontman Andrew Wood, who had a long history with drug problems, overdosed on heroin. After spending a few days in the hospital in a coma, Wood died, effectively bringing Mother Love Bone to an end. In the months following Wood's death, Gossard and Ament would be approached by Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell (who was Andrew Wood's roommate), and asked if they would be interested in recording a single containing two songs he had written in tribute to Andrew Wood. The project turned into an entire album and the group took the name Temple of the Dog, a reference to a line in the lyrics of a song penned by Wood. Gossard and Ament would later form the band Pearl Jam. Fairweather initially remained inactive but later surfaced in the Seattle based psychadelic rock band Love Battery before again dropping off radar. In 2006 he resurfaced in The Press Corps, with Garret Shavlik (The Fluid) and Dan Peters (Mudhoney). Gilmore's profile also dropped significantly following Mother Love Bone's demise although he did participate in the reunion of his former band Ten Minute Warning in 1998, and was credited with providing 'inspiration' for the song "Never The Machine Forever" (credited as being written by Kim Thayil) on Soundgarden's final studio album, 1996's Down on the Upside. MOTLEY CRUE Profile Ep39pt2 KASR VIDEO - 411 sec
Featuring an artist EPK on the band Motley Crue and thier 1994 release of Hooligan's Holiday! Kasrvnotebook: Mötley Crüe (pronounced "Motley Crew") is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1980. Bass guitarist Nikki Sixx and lead guitarist Mick Mars have been with the band for its entire history, and for almost all of it they were joined by vocalist Vince Neil and drummer Tommy Lee. Mötley Crüe is one of the best-selling American hard rock/heavy metal acts, having sold over 45 million album copies worldwide, including 25 million copies in the US alone. The band has often been noted for their hard-living lifestyles; all members have had numerous brushes with the law, spent time in jail, suffered long addictions to alcohol and drugs, have had a countless amount of escapades with beautiful women, and they are heavily tattooed. Their ninth studio album, as well as a film adaptation of their best-selling band autobiography The Dirt, is due to be released in 2009. On October 14, 1991 the band's 6th album Decade of Decadence was released. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard charts. It was supposed to be just something for the fans while they worked on the next "all new" album. After Decades release though, Neil left the band in February 1992. A controversy exists to this day over whether Neil was fired or quit. Sixx has long maintained that Neil quit the band. However, Neil disputes this and insists that he was fired. Neil was replaced by John Corabi (formerly of Angora and The Scream). Mötley Crüe's commercial success waned throughout the 1990s, although their self-titled March 1994 release made the Billboard top ten (#7). Thaler would manage the band alone until 1994, after the band did a mass-firing when their album, Mötley Crüe, failed to meet commercial expectations. The band reunited in 1997, after their current manager, Allen Kovac, and Neil's manager, Bert Stein, set up a meeting between Neil, Lee, and Sixx. Agreeing to "leave their egos at the door," the band released Generation Swine. Although it debuted at #4, and despite the band performing at the American Music Awards, the album was a commercial failure, due in part to their label Elektra Records' lack of support. The band soon left Elektra and created their own label, Mötley Records. for more info: http://www.motley.com About the rest of the episode: Another typical day at the radio station as T-ROC and Slavegirl host this edition when unexpectedly the door flies open and in walks the un-dead BOBBY DIABLO with KRYSTAL METH! SEPULTURA Profile Act I Ep39pt4 KASR VIDEO - 502 sec
Featuring part 1 of 3 of an artist profile EPK on the Brazillian metal band SEPULTURA and thier 1993 release of CHAOS A.D.! Profile continues on Ep39pt5. Kasrvnotebook: Sepultura is a Brazilian heavy metal band, formed in 1984. Their name means "grave" in Portuguese, which they chose after Max Cavalera, one of the founding members, was translating the lyrics of the Motörhead song "Dancing on Your Grave." Sepultura was formed in Belo Horizonte in 1984 by Max Cavalera (rhythm guitar), his younger brother Igor Cavalera (drums), Paulo Pinto (bass), Jairo Guedes (lead guitar) and Wagner Lamounier (vocals). Sepultura signed to Cogumelo Records after a few years of performing. Lamounier left the band without recording on a demo due to differences in ideologies. Max took over as vocals later on. Their first EP was Bestial Devastation, a split with Overdose's album on the flipside. Their first LP was Morbid Visions (1986), which included the moderate hit Troops Of Doom that attracted the band some attention. Both albums are nowadays regarded as early milestones in the establishment of death metal. After Morbid Visions, Jairo Guedes left the band for another thrash metal venture and Sao Paulo based guitarist Andreas Kisser replaced him. Their second full-length album was Schizophrenia, which was a critical success that led them to being contracted to Roadrunner Records. for more info: http://www.sepultura.com.br About the rest of the episode: BOBBY DIABLO with KRYSTAL METH continue thier re-conquest of ASU University radio mayhem! The MURMURS Interview Ep73pt4 KASR VIDEO - 511 sec
Gayle interviews the original American "Puffy-Ami Yumi Duo": The MURMURS back- backstage at Tempe's Electric Ballroom. Kasrvnotebook: Leisha Hailey and Heather Grody began performing as The Murmurs in 1991 while the duo were both students of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. With their self-released, debut album, Who We Are, they quickly attracted a cult following on the East Village club circuit. In 1994, The Murmurs signed with MCA Records. They released their self-titled LP the same year. The duo expanded into a four-woman group in 1997 with the addition of bassist Sheri Ozeki and drummer Sherri Solinger. They released Pristine Smut in 1997 and, a year later, Blender. In 2001, Hailey and Grody reformed The Murmurs as a new band named GUSH, which featured an indie rock sound. The band included members Jon Skibic, Brad Casselden and Dave Doyle. They released a self-titled album available only at shows. In 2005, following the breakup of GUSH, Heather Reid (formerly Grody) and Jon Skibic formed the band REDCAR with Michael Sullivan and Ryan MacMillan. MIGHTY,MIGHTY BOSSTONES Interview Ep40pt2 KASR VIDEO - 581 sec
Featuring an interview by Mike Diablo with all and ska powerful, legendary: MIGHTY,MIGHTY BOSSTONES! (Yes, we're biased and we're fans!) Kasrvnotebook: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are a ska-core band from Boston, Massachusetts. Formed in 1985, the Bosstones are credited with the creation of the ska-core genre, a form of music that mixes elements of third wave ska and hardcore punk. The band released seven full-length albums, three EPs and a live album while touring continuously before their announcement of a hiatus in December 2003. They reunited in 2007 and performed together for the first time in four years at Middle East. In December of 2007, the band released a compilation album, Medium Rare, their first release since the band reunited earlier that year. The band's roots lay in the hardcore scene of the early 1980s along with a strong influence from the British 2 Tone ska scene of the 1970s. Bassist Joe Gittleman played with local hardcore band Gang Green, while vocalist Dicky Barrett was a member of Impact Unit and, later on, the Cheap Skates. The Cheap Skates lineup constantly changed and would feature members of Gang Green on occasion. It was through the Cheap Skates that a lineup coalesced around a core of Barrett, Gittleman, Tim Burton (saxophone), Nate Albert (guitar), Josh Dalsimer (drums), Tim Bridewell (trombone) and Ben Carr (a ubiquitous, but non-musician onstage presence, later credited as "Bosstone"). The group decided on the name, "the Bosstones" as a reference to their hometown. While some of the band members were influenced by bands such as AC/DC, Motörhead, The Clash and Stiff Little Fingers, Barrett had become enthralled with 2 Tone ska, which was in the tail end of its existence. In 1985, the Bosstones made their recorded debut when they were featured on the Mash It Up ska compilation. The Bosstones' contribution was "The Cave." Another early recording, "Drums and Chickens," appeared on the 1989 ska compilation Mashin' Up The Nation. By the time Mashin' Up The Nation was released, the Bosstones had temporarily disbanded in order for Albert and Gittleman to finish high school. After their graduation, the band reunited. Around this time, it was brought to the band's attention that an a cappella group, The Bosstones, had already used the name during the 1950s. A bartender friend arbitrarily suggested that they become the "Mighty Mighty Bosstones", in order to avoid any possible legal hassles, to which the band agreed. for more info: http://www.sideonedummy.com & http://www.bosstonesmusic.com About the rest of the episode: Another typical day at the radio and The Nose is nervous that he's hosting this edition of KASR V! KISS FanCon95' Ep78pt4 KASR VIDEO - 576 sec
Larry & Steven being the ultimate Phoenix KISS fans host this special edition and recount thier experiences at the KISS 1995 Convention in Arizona. Also featuring some convention KISS led sing-a-longs and other "backstage" type footage. Kasrvnotebook: Kiss traces its roots to Wicked Lester, a New York City-based rock and roll band led by co-founders Gene Simmons (born Chaim Witz in Haifa, Israel on August 25, 1949) and Paul Stanley (born Stanley Harvey Eisen in Queens, New York City on January 20, 1952). Wicked Lester, with their eclectic mixture of musical styles, never achieved any success. They recorded one album, which was shelved by Epic Records, and played a handful of live shows. Simmons and Stanley, feeling that a new musical direction was needed, abandoned Wicked Lester in 1972 and began forming a new group. In late 1972, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley came across an ad in Rolling Stone placed by Peter Criss, a veteran drummer from the New York club scene, who was previously in bands called "Lips" and "Chelsea". Criss (born George Peter John Criscuola on December 20, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York City) auditioned for and joined the new version of Wicked Lester. The trio focused on a much harder style of rock than Wicked Lester played. Inspired by the theatrics of the New York Dolls, they also began experimenting with their image by wearing makeup and various outfits. In November 1972, the trio played a showcase for Epic Records A&R director Don Ellis, in an effort to secure a record deal. Although the performance went well, Ellis hated the group's image and music. On top of that, as he was leaving, he was vomited on by Criss's brother. In January 1973, the group added lead guitarist Paul "Ace" Frehley (born April 27, 1951 in the Bronx, New York City). According to the book Kiss & Tell by Ace Frehley's former best-friends, Gordon G.G. Gebert and Bob McAdams (who accompanied Ace Frehley to the audition) the eccentric Frehley impressed the group with his first audition, although he showed up wearing two different sneakers (one red and one orange) and began warming up on his guitar while another guitarist (Bob Kulick) was being auditioned by the band. A few weeks after Frehley joined, the Wicked Lester name was dropped and the band became Kiss. for more info: http://www.kissonline.com ASU Student Radio is celebrating it's 25th year being the Sun Devil's Original Alternative!
