As is always the case with the graffiti artists working with the Crime Stoppers Community Youth Officer, the artists are given creative license to do their art work.
Kalmplex decided that she would do this tribute to her two brothers, both murdered in Toronto.. both cases unsolved.

THE 90+ year old 'Baul' Shah Abdul Karim has written and composed about 1500 songs. Six books of his songs -- Aftab Sangeet, Gano Sangeet, Kalnir Dheu, Dholmela, Bhatir Chithi and Kalnir Kooley -- have been published. Bangla Academy has translated 10 of his songs in English and he has been honoured with the prestigious national award -- Ekushey Padok in 2001.
Shah Abdul Karim's songs such as Maya lagaisey, Ami koolhara kolonkini and Gari choley na have attained popularity among music fans of this generation. Quite a few contemporary artistes and musicians have shot to fame rendering Abdul Karim's songs -- often re-arranged or remixed. His songs, following the trend of Sufism, stand out for their extraordinary metaphors, message of secularism and depiction of divine love in simple words; a reason why his music has a mass appeal.
As a tribute to the living legend, Sound Machine has released an album titled Jibonto Kingbodonti: Baul Shah Abdul Karim. The mixed album features renditions of Abdul Karim's familiar songs by celebrated as well as emerging artistes -- Bangla, Momotaz, Dalchhut, Maqsud, Dilruba Khan, Shandipon, Ajob, Oojaan, The London Underground and others.
The opening song Agey ki shundor din kataitham, re-arranged and performed by Oojaan gives the album a lukewarm start. This well-known song, addressing the once thriving harmony among Muslims and Hindus in the rural areas, is not slow paced but Oojan's rendition lacks the exuberance manifested in Abdul Karim's songs.
The next song, Ami tomar kaul-er gari however, sweeps one away. The song, re-arranged by Bappa Mazumdar and rendered by Momotaz, follows the genre of Dehotatwa, a sect of Murshidee. Much has been said about Momotaz and her "questionable" songs that have fetched her mass popularity but her performance in this song should be enough to demonstrate that given opportunities, she can work wonders. Her not so stereotypically melodious, yet powerful voice questions the divine will in the song.
Pradeep Kumar and The London Underground deliver a very appealing and hum-able version of Kano piritee barailarey bondhu. Pradeep's skillful vocals epitomise the eternal yearning for the beloved. The fusion number aptly uses several sounds effects and alaap.
Bangla performs Shokhi kunjo shajao. Anusheh's inimitable style and flawless rendition is nothing new to the listeners; only one predicament -- the number sounds more like the songs Bangla usually performs and less like a Shah Abdul Karim song.
Manush hoye talaash korley, re-arranged and rendered by Ajob highlights spirituality. Ajob uses the serene style of Lalon songs, which makes the song interesting and easy to the ear.
Dilruba Khan renders Ailaye na. The tune of the song sounds somewhat similar to another number in the album -- Bashonto batashey, rendered by Shandipon. Dilruba's breathy vocals and emotive expressions make her version memorable.
The album has 12 tracks in total and can be a treat for music aficionados of all cults. Different artistes, groups and musicians add their unique touch to the collection. Kudos to Sound Machine for putting together a quality production. Proceeds from the sales of the album will go to Shah Abdul Karim, who is suffering from age-related ailments.

Graffiti artist Kalmplex attended the Bloor Festival '08, Toronto, ON Canada as part of the Communities Advancing Valued Environments (C.A.V.E.) and Toronto Crime Stoppers booth sponsored by the Harbord Village BIA and Neil Wright Real Estate.
Kalmplex has been doing legal graffiti with the Toronto Crime Stoppers School officer for two years on and off. On this date she rolled up on her bicycle with stencils and spray paint in hand wanting an opportunity to paint one of two BMX Bike Ramps being painted as part of the festival display.
When Kalmplex was done her art piece it read "It takes a community to raise children..We All Can Be Happy..RIP Chad and Karim". She had decicated the mural to an appeal for information to solve the murders of both her brothers - Chad Winter - gunned down at Greenwood and Gerrard March 3, 2001, and Karim Afa-Ayl, killed December 23, 2007 in Regent Park.
Detective Larry Straver, Coordinator of Toronto Crime Stoppers took the information and followed up with the investigating Toronto Police Service Homicide Squad officers, confirming that both cases were unsolved. The 2001 case has been transferred to the Cold Case Squad, and Detectives Stacy Gallant and Ali Ansari are actively investigation the 2007 case.

"This is a perfect example of the community Crime Stoppers program out there engaging the youth of Toronto in positive, challenging and interesting recreational activities ... and those youth having faith in the community Crime Stoppers program as a result. I have been working with Kalmplex for two years and didn't even know she had two family members murdered. Obviously the trust that she has built up in me has transferred to trust in the anonymity and value of the Crime Stoppers program .. and now Kalmplex is standing up against violence in her community.

Published to great acclaim in 2003, Monica Ali's debut novel Brick Lane garnered rapturous reviews and
countless award nominations both in the UK and internationally. A sharply observed story about the life
of a Bangladeshi immigrant girl who comes to London to marry, it is ultimately a universal story about life,
love, cultural difference and the power of the human spirit.
On reading the novel, producer Alison Owen was immediately attracted to the story and saw its potential
as a film: "I read 'Brick Lane' and I fell in love with it, and enquired about the option straight away.
However, it wasn't an easy project and so I didn't follow it up immediately, but it just haunted me for the
next couple of months. I kept thinking about it and eventually I just gave into the urge, bought the rights
and started putting the package together."
Once a first draft of the screenplay had been completed, Owen could see the direction that the project
was taking, but realizing that it still needed a lot of work, she thought it a good time to bring a director on
board, and approached Sarah Gavron. Explains Owen: "Sarah's a director with extremely strong vision.
We sent her a copy of the script as well as the book, which it turned out she'd already read and was
passionate about." Adds Gavron: "I read the draft and thought it showed lots of potential and came on
board at that stage. What really appealed to me was Nazneen's journey. The story of a woman finding
her place in the world, and finding a voice, so beautifully told, with such compassion, wit and emotional
depth."
Trying to condense a 500 page novel which focuses on the inner thoughts of its central character into a
screenplay, that still maintained the heart of Nazneen's voyage of discovery, was always going to be a
challenge, but Gavron and screenwriter Abi Morgan made some bold decisions. Says Gavron: "We tried
to be very faithful to the spirit of the book. But it was impossible to include everything. It's a very
complicated process because there's so much that you do want to include. But in the end, we chose to
compress the time frame of the novel and set it all in 2001 with some flashbacks and back story -- and
that unlocked for us the scriptwriting process. We went through many drafts before we made that
decision, and it was rather daunting. There's so much wonderful texture to the novel, but in terms of the
narrative, really it kicked off in 2001 when Nazneen met Karim and her life began to change."Nazneen's life is turned upside down at the tender age of seventeen,. Forced intoan arranged marriage to
an older man, she exchanges her Bangladeshi village home for a block of flats in London's East End. In
this new world, pining for her home and her sister, she struggles to make sense of her existence -- and to
do her duty to her husband. A man of inflated ideas (and stomach), he sorely tests her compliance.
Told from birth that she must not fight her fate, Nazneen submits, devoting her life to raising her family
and slapping down her demons of discontent. Until the day that Karim, a hot-headed local man, bursts
into her life.
Against a background of escalating racial tension, they embark on an affair that finally forces Nazneen to
take control of her life. Set in multicultural Britain, Brick Lane is a truly contemporary story of love, cultural
difference, and ultimately, the strength of the human spirit.

"Bloodshed In Our Streets" is the name of a song that was written by Toronto cop Jesse Weeks. It was used on one of the first YouTube appeal videos for an unsolved homicide case in Toronto - the Omar Wellington murder investigation. (videos are no longer posted on the Toronto Crime Stoppers YouTube account http://YouTube.com/1800222tips because the case was solved. Unfortunately, the victim, will never be brought back to life, and his family/friends grieves his loss.
This video was recored by the Toronto Crime Stoppers Community Youth Officer Scott Mills at the Bloor Festival '08 on Bloor St W east of Bathurst St, Toronto, ON (right near Honest Ed's)
The officer is standing in front of 2 sheets of 4'x8' 3/8" thickness plywood on some stands made out of 2"x4" 's . The plywood was painted at this event by legal graffiti artist Kalmplex at the event, and is an appeal for information in the murder of her two brothers
Chad Wynter was murdered at 1231 Gerrard St E, Toronto, ON Canada on March 3, 2001. This murder is known to the Toronto Police Service Homicide Squad as Murder #8-2001.
Karim Ata-Ayi was murdered December 23, 2007 at 14 Blevins Place, Toronto, ON Canada in an area known as Regent Park. This murder is known to the Toronto Police Service Homicide Squad as Murder #82-2007.
