The Anatolian (Karabash) Dog Club has been registered with the Kennel Club in London since 1968. The Club was founded in 1965 and today has almost 300 members. It is the only British Breed Club that is dedicated to the promotion and conservation of the Turkish flock guard known historically and now colloquially as the Karabash. Over the last half century the breed has firmly become known as The Kangal Dog by Turkish people, and it is Turkey's National Breed. The breed is classified under the generic term "Anatolian Shepherd Dog" throughout Europe.
The Kangal Dog
An ancient flock guard of Turkey, originating in the Sivas-Kangal region of eastern Anatolia. These dogs are large, powerful working animals, gentle to their flocks, but daunting to potential predators. These dogs guard, but don't generally herd.
Appearance?
Mastiff-like, with a short dense fawn coloured coat, and always a characteristic black mask, and curled tail. Height ranging from 28" upto 32" and around 100lbs upto around 140lbs, dependent on sex of animal. They are rugged, self-confident, dominant, active working dogs, suitable for people with energy, enthusiasm, and large gardens with excellent fencing!

The Kangal Dog or Anatolian (Karabash) Dog
- History -
The Kangal Dog or Anatolian (Karabash) Dog as it is also known, is a sheep-guard from the Sivas-Kangal region of central Turkey. It has a history in its homeland where it is still working today as it has done for centuries.
A large, strong, mastiff-type dog, it is kept by the shepherds strictly as a working animal primarily to guard the flocks of sheep and goats which graze the open plains of the vast Anatolian plateau.
A pure-bred Kangal Dog is highly prized by its owner, who will go to great lengths to organise a mating with another good dog.
Because of the hard life they have to lead only the strongest and steadiest pups are kept, and these are carefully reared and fed in the early months to achieve the size and strength required in adulthood.
To give the dogs the advantage in any confrontation with wolves, the Turkish shepherds usually fit them with iron-spiked collars to protect the neck. Their ears may also be cropped to avoid them being torn causing loss of blood.
The name Karabash is popularly used for these dogs in Turkey because of the characteristic black mask (kara = black, bas = head). The true type is also correctly known however as the Kangal Dog, after the aristocratic family of landowners from the Sivas region who, hundreds of years ago, took great pride in preserving this dog as a pure breed distinct from other shepherd dogs of inferior type.
Historical evidence shows, in fact, that a breed of lion-like guard dog has been in use in this and other parts of the Middle East since many centuries BC.
Karabash Dogs in Britain
The first pair of Karabash were brought to England and registered with the Kennel Club by Dr Charmian Steele in 1965. Shortly afterwards the Kennel Club agreed to the breed name Anatolian (Karabash) Dog, with the specific name in brackets to allow for other Anatolian breeds to be introduced later and classified separately. Sadly, however, when dogs of different types were imported in the years that followed they were all registered as Karabash. Under pressure from the importer of the non-Karabash type Anatolians, the registered name at the Kennel Club was changed in 1983 to Anatolian Shepherd Dog. It has thus been left to the original breed society, the Anatolian (Karabash) Dog Club to maintain the purity of its bloodlines and preserve the Karabash as a breed in Britain, just as the same dog has been preserved under the name of Kangal in Turkey.
Owning a Karabash
Before you decide that this is the dog for you, find out as much as you can about the Karabash from owners and breeders. Contact the AKDC Secretary for information and for news of forthcoming shows or social events where you can meet the dogs in person. When buying a puppy always ask to see its dam and find out all you can about the sire too. Do not necessarily buy from the first litter that comes along. Karabash are long-lived and the right puppy is worth waiting for. If in doubt, seek advice: there are many experienced owners in the AKDC who will be happy to help. Bear in mind that the Karabash is not everybody's dog. While highly intelligent, they have been bred to use their initiative and are not particularly receptive to conventional training. The guarding instinct is marked and they must be carefully socialised from puppy hood to accept visitors and other dogs. They are active, inquisitive dogs and need plenty of well-fenced space. They are devoted and affectionate companions and do not like to be shut away from human company. Are you prepared to adjust your lifestyle to suit your Karabash?

I have only once seen the same dog on TV in a music video clip, but other than that, I've never seen one alike. It is said that he's a "Karabash", but when I search for it on the internet, I always get Anatolian Shepherds, called Kangal as a result.
I think my dog might be a Kangal/Husky mix or something, but we can't be sure. My aunt found him in Turkey beneath a house, together with his sister. The rest of his nest were murdered. One drowned and one purposely ran over by a car. He absolutely doesn't like heat either, so it's a good thing he's here :)
Anyway, I thought I'd upload this movie, cause when I'm bragging about our dog, people always ask for a picture, but I never carry any with me. So I'll just give 'em a link or something :)
