They welcomed her with open arms, supposing that exposure to the outside world would help them in their plight against Russian government opression. It probably didn't...
From Tom: "This video begins in a fishing camp near Talovka with Marina Ketchgelkot and her husband Alexei showing off Mukhomor. It ends at a remote Reindeer Herder's Yurt about 30 miles east of Talovka where we visited some of Ludmila Vagal's cousins on her father's side all of whom she had never met."
The sound is a little off in one spot - it's hard enough matching soundtrack to video, but when it's in Koryak language it's even harder. The squealing noises during the drumming are the dogs.

This is the first video submitted to Youtube featuring the soon-to-be much more famous Bear Man of Kamchatka, naturalist Charlie Russell, son of the famous Ontario conservationist Andy Russell. Charlie has starred in 4 documentaries and tv programs and is the author of 3 books, Spirit Bear, Grizzly Heart, and Grizzly Seasons. His groundbreaking research on wild grizzlies in the Russian far east has shed light on amazing potentials and possiblities for human-bear coexistence and his efforts have helped lead to the vastly improved protection of the threatened pristine Kamchatkan ecosystem. Here is a photomontage of his astonishing work with Russian bears set to Ray Lynch's "The Oh of Pleasure".
Note: This sort of interaction with bears is NOT recommended, most bears are too negatively influenced by humans and are not as trustworthy as these bears you see in these photographs. These bears have interacted with few humans aside from Charlie, and are not influenced to look for human food as a source, so their involvement with humans like Charlie is sheer fresh Edenic curiosity and friendship. Also many of these bears Charlie raised and released into the wild himself. Charlie follows very careful standards and precautions and knows the limits, though as he has discovered they are much further out thand most bear "experts" let on. With time hopefully Charlie's discoveries and lessons will help reverse the harsh negative influence of media-mongered tragic errors made by such notable victims of our society's Ancient-Rome-like schedenfreude as Tim Treadwell and Mishio Hoshino.

Throughout the cold-war the Kamchatka peninsula was home to the Soviet empire's nuclear powered fleet.
Even Soviet citizens needed special permits to visit here. But today the military enclave is largely redundant. And for the people that used to work there, there's not much left to do. The grey concrete town is now a desolate Place full of deserted flats. Yet the Soviet secrecy surrounding Kamchatka could now be its salvation. With its 29 active volcanoes the land steams and belches super-heated water and mud. It's a landscape that's a veritable eco-tourism paradise. And it's this vision that cheers Vice Governor Vladmir Balakayev. He wants to see wealthy tourists sampling 'The Valley of the Geysers' and the Laval Lake. With them could be a new lease of life for this desolate peninsula. Like everywhere in Russia, Kamchatka's future is precarious. But here at least economics is guiding it towards a post-Soviet rarity -- preservation of wilderness.

Kamchatka Peninsula (Russian: полуо́стров Камча́тка) including the Volcanoes of Kamchatka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a 1,250-kilometer long peninsula in the Russian Far East, with an area of 472,300 km². It lies between the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Sea of Okhotsk to the west.[1] Immediately offshore along the Pacific coast of the peninsula runs the 10,500 meter deep Kuril-Kamchatka Trench.
The Kamchatka Peninsula, the Commander Islands, and Karaginsky Island constitute the Kamchatka Krai of the Russian Federation. The majority of the 402,500 inhabitants are Russians, but there are also about 13,000 Koryaks. More than half of the population lives in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (198,028 people) and Yelizovo (41,533. The Kamchatka River and the surrounding central valley are flanked by large volcanic belts containing around 160 volcanoes, 29 of them still active. The peninsula has a high density of volcanoes and associated volcanic phenomena, with 19 active volcanoes being included in the six UNESCO World Heritage List sites in the Volcanoes of Kamchatka group, most of them on the Kamchatka Peninsula.[2]
The highest volcano is Klyuchevskaya Sopka (4,750 m or 15,584 ft), while the most striking is Kronotsky, whose perfect cone was said by celebrated volcanologists Robert and Barbara Decker to be a prime candidate for the world's most beautiful volcano.
