| Kalevi Kiviniemi improvising in Melbourne - 485 sec
Kalevi Kiviniemi improvising a Suite on the theme 'Waltzing Matilda', it consists of 5 movements, Prélude, Elfes, Marche, Introduction et Scherzo & Finale. He plays the recently enlarged Hill, Norman and Beard organ in Melbourne Town Hall, Australia. William Hill & Son built the first hall organ in 1872, it was rebuilt in 1905 by Ingram & Son, but after a disastrous fire in 1925, a new organ by Hill, Norman and Beard was commissioned and opened in 1929. By 1993 the organ was in need of refurbishment, so after consultation the contract was given to the American firm of Schantz to rebuild it. However the rebuild has been controversial as some have said that the the organ committee has paid scant regard to the 'Cultural heritage' of the organ and made major changes to an important and historic instrument. While they do have a point (I have not heard much of the previous organ to make a judgement), I think the restored organ sounds fabulous, with the additions complementing the existing structure. The organ has several interesting features, having a large metal 32' Diaphone, large wooden 32' Tibia Profunda, a 32' Contra Trombone on the enclosed Great and a wonderfully loud 8' Trumpet Victoria to part hair at 50 paces :-) Sadly funds did not run to restore the Echo Organ with its 8' Vox Mystica & Post Horn, but then the pipes were in terrible condition, perhaps in the future new pipework will be added.
Kalevi Kiviniemi was born in 1958 in Finland and has a great reputation as a concert organist. He has been a jury member for several international Organ competitions and was the Artistic director of the Lahti Organ Festival for ten years from 1991. He has receieved many prestigious Finnish awards for his recordings and performances. I can find almost no info about his formative training in the organ, although he did study in Paris, but with whom?
This recording comes from Waltzing Matilda Kalevi Kiviniemi plays the grand concert organ of the Melbourne Town hall, Australia FUGA 9196 from the Finnish Fuga label, see www.fuga.fi for more details. A very fine recording of this organ IMHO.
