Kathryn Dawn Lang, meglio conosciuta come k.d. lang, scritto rigorosamente tutto in minuscolo, "così si nota meno", è una cantante e cantautrice, è lesbica, vegetariana, buddista...e orgogliosamente canadese. Queste sono le poche cose che si conoscono di lei, nonostante una carriera iniziata ben prima del suo album di debutto "Angel With A Lariat" datato 1987. Nel 2004 esce " Hymns Of The 49th Parallel", album interamente dedicato alle più affascinanti composizioni di songwriter che stanno "oltre il 49° parallelo, quello che segna il confine tra USA e Canada", spiega, "e che, nel linguaggio comune degli americani, identifica noi canadesi. Ho scelto brani che incarnano lo spirito della mia terra, soprattutto la natura e l'ambiente. Il Canada è uno stato enorme in cui la natura ha un impatto assoluto sulle vite di tutti noi abitanti. Spesso le temperature sono rigide e costringono molti di noi all'isolamento: ecco perché, credo, si è sviluppato da sempre nella nostra nazione un'attitudine all'introspezione. La canzone d'autore, riflessiva e intimista, in questo senso si è rivelata mezzo di espressione ideale. Unita a una sensibilità ambientale, ha prodotto capolavori assoluti come i brani di Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen". La musica di k.d.lang che troviamo in questo disco è una musica acustica, elegante, musica lenta ed avvolgente, da non ascoltare se si ha fretta o se si cerca qualcosa che ci dia la carica. k.d.lang è una cantante che in America è un cult e da noi è quasi sconosciuta, una cantante con capacità vocali indiscutibili. Capacità ancor più indiscutibili se si ha la possibilità di vederla dal vivo. Musica per un caldo inverno, musica acustica da ascoltare in assoluto relax, sia che siamo nella vasca da bagno circondati da candele accese o davanti a un camino sprofondati nella lettura di un libro. E' concesso, anzi suggerito, sorseggiare in modica quantità del whiskey, preferibilmente allungato con due parti di acqua fresca, niente ghiaccio. La canzone che ho scelto da questo disco di cover è "After The Gold Rush", splendido brano di Neil Young.
