La Jetee's Script pt.1
This is the story of a man, marked by an image from his childhood. The
violent scene that upsets him, and whose meaning he was to grasp only years
later, happened on the main jetty at Orly, the Paris airport, sometime
before the outbreak of World War III.
Orly, Sunday. Parents used to take their children there to watch the
departing planes.
On this particular Sunday, the child whose story we are telling was bound
to remember the frozen sun, the setting at the end of the jetty, and a
woman's face.
Nothing sorts out memories from ordinary moments. Later on they do claim
remembrance when they show their scars. That face he had seen was to be the
only peacetime image to survive the war. Had he really seen it? Or had he
invented that tender moment to prop up the madness to come?
The sudden roar, the woman's gesture, the crumpling body, and the cries of
the crowd on the jetty blurred by fear.
Later, he knew he had seen a man die.
And sometime after came the destruction of Paris.
Many died. Some believed themselves to be victors. Others were taken
prisoner. The survivors settled beneath Chaillot, in an underground network
of galleries.
Above ground, Paris, as most of the world, was uninhabitable, riddled with
radioactivity.
The victors stood guard over an empire of rats.
The prisoners were subjected to experiments, apparently of great concern to
those who conducted them.
The outcome was a disappointment for some - death for others - and for
others yet, madness.
One day they came to select a new guinea pig from among the prisoners.
He was the man whose story we are telling.
He was frightened. He had heard about the Head Experimenter. He was
prepared to meet Dr. Frankenstein, or the Mad Scientist. Instead, he met a
reasonable man who explained calmly that the human race was doomed. Space
was off-limits. The only hope for survival lay in Time. A loophole in Time,
and then maybe it would be possible to reach food, medicine, sources of
energy.
This was the aim of the experiments: to send emissaries into Time, to
summon the Past and Future to the aid of the Present.
But the human mind balked at the idea. To wake up in another age meant to
be born again as an adult. The shock would be too great.
Having only sent lifeless or insentient bodies through different zones of
Time, the inventors where now concentrating on men given to very strong
mental images. If they were able to conceive or dream another time, perhaps
they would be able to live in it.
The camp police spied even on dreams.
This man was selected from among a thousand for his obsession with an image
from the past.
Nothing else, at first, put stripping out the present, and its racks.
They begin again.
The man doesn't die, nor does he go mad. He suffers. Hard to find- I did a poor job shooting this from a 16mm film which I can't borrow again, was unable to make the subtitles clearer- but i hope there is enjoyment anyway,
YT has several dubbed-in English versions- one not too good (the narrator uses the phrase, "the head experimentater" making me think for all his perfect accent he is not a native english speaker- it hurts the solemn mood of the film when such comical gaffs occur, and holes in a really nice soundtrack to replace the narration- another dub is better done, tho the guy sounds like Keith Moon, quite cockney... and one is a student project with a re-dubbed soundtrack. This is the film as released on 16mm, retaining the original soundtrack, and with subtitles that are hard to read...but like most Americans I hate dubbing. Wanna hear the sound more as the director intended. So even tho its not a great copy, on this one you can hear it in French and read it in English...it has a cool soundtrack- I like to mic the films from near the projector so you get to hear the clacking and whirring. So if like me you understand v. little French but hate dubbing, you may like to see this version. Auteur : RobinofSactown Tags:La Jetee science fiction sci fi french movies | | La Jetee (in French, English subtitles, from 16mm) pt.2 - 571 sec Spoiler! If you haven't seen it don't read this!At about 7minutes fifty seconds is the famous moving scene- watch her face closely. Some guy wrote at another YT version that its just another series of stills- it is, at 24 frames per second. She opens her eyes and blinks 3 times...sort of like Dorothy clicking her heels. In the next segment the pair are pictured with stuffed animals- and they don't move any more than the specimens do- so the scene in bed is where he got back in time, really, just for a moment, before being yanked back.- and one realizes that in this story, innocent people like them, (like us?) in love for a moment, are as doomed as the trilobytes. I didn't know about this scene- when I noticed it on the 4th or 5th viewing I was amazed, and ran the projector back several times to be sure. Wow. In a world of stagnant frozen moments, a tiny movement is like seeing a miracle. Someday we won't move at all. Carpe Diem, and Carpe Noctem, my friends! We take our choice of movements somewhat for granted. It is such a blessing to move through this world, and to have a living, breathing world through which to move. The suggestion that innocence, kindness, and feelings will perish long before the human race is the scariest notion here. May we never be as efficient as the cockroaches, who eat their dead pals. May we always strive to keep love in our hearts, no matter what. Dream better dreams for the future, please, than the world of "la jetee". Peace/ out. The tavern of Lillas Pastia
Carmen rejects the advances of Zuniga. She is waiting for Don José, who is about to be released from prison (he had been demoted and imprisoned for letting her escape). She also seems unimpressed by the toreador Escamillo, who makes advances to her. As all leave except Carmen and her gypsy friends, Zuniga promises to return, despite her discouragement. She refuses to join the smugglers because she is in love. Hearing Don José's voice, she tells the others to leave. He is jealous when he learns that she has danced for the officers, so she dances for him, but is interrupted by the bugle sounding the retreat. When Don José insists that he must return to barracks she accuses him of not loving her. He produces the faded flower, telling her it has stayed with him through his imprisonment. If he loves her, she says, he will follow her to the mountains, but he is still resolved to leave. He is still there when Zuniga returns and disobeys Zuniga's order to leave. They come to blows and are separated by the smugglers. Don José now has no choice but to desert and join the smugglers.

| Don José\ oui, tu m'entendras! violemment
Je le veux! Carmen, tu m'entendras!
Non!Car si tu m'aimais,là-bas, là-bas tu me suivrais!
Don José Carmen!
Carmen Oui! Là-bas, là-bas dans la montagne!
José Carmen!
Carmen là-bas, là-bas tu me suivrais! Sur ton cheval tu me prendrais,et comme un brave à travers la campagne,
en croupe, tu m'emporterais! Là-bas, là-bas dans la montagne,
José (troublé) Carmen!
Carmen là-bas, là-bas tu me suivrais! tu me suivrais, si tu m'aimais!
Carmen là-bas, là-bas tu me suivrais! Sur ton cheval tu me prendrais...José Ah! Carmen, hélas! tais-toi! tais-toi! mon Dieu!|
