I cut together this movie using the new iMovie. It was difficult. Somehow, I survived.

This week's Macworld Video addresses the new features in Apple's recent iMovie '08 7.1 update. Unlike most iLife updates, which are all about bug fixes, this update adds some nice new functionality to iMovie '08.
It's a controversial product, this iMovie '08, largely because it's a brand-new product that is lacking many of the features of its predecessor, iMovie HD. However, leaving aside the controversy over Apple's decision to kill iMovie HD, iMovie '08 is very good at what it was designed to do: let users cut down their videos quickly and then share them with their friends and family. If you're someone with a giant pile of home videos just sitting around unedited, iMovie '08 is meant for you.

Recently You Tuber, hazzer123daniels123 asked me about effects in iMovie. I do my level best here to explain them. Hopefully I'll get more articulate as I do more of these tutorial type videos.
Edit: Please not this is iMovie 06 which I got with the iLife package. In later versions of iMovie Apple removed most of the effects present in the older versions.. They did this because they are idiots. :)

http://live.pirillo.com/ - You'll have to pardon the video's vapor trails (largely due to the way CamTwist takes screen captures live). I wish I could have video'ed how simple it was to authenticate my YouTube account from within iMovie. Take it from me, if this thing uploads quickly... Apple has a winner on their hands.

Apple did create a new logo for it to show that it is a completely different version. Just like that engineer, I found the old iMovie too hard to use. And I can't wait to get my hands on it. Two other features I like: being able to add a subtitle (perhaps a logo?) on the whole length of the movie, which you could not do before, at least not easily, and the YouTube upload feature as I upload most of the videos on Google's video site anyway.

It allowed me to crop the video (!!!) , add an audio track that I had adjusted in another program, and adjust the color, and send it directly to YouTube. I thought I'd miss the effects, but with the adjustments to exposure, saturation, white point etc, maybe I won't miss them after all...

| Windows Movie Maker vs. iMovie - showdown! - 274 sec
There's a myth out there that Windows Movie Maker is the "same" is iMovie. It's often brought up when Mac users praise the iLife suite (which comes free with every Mac), in particular iMovie. Some Windows users will say, "But we've got Windows Movie Maker. That's just the same, right?" NO. It is not. Not even remotely.
Windows Movie Maker is very limited compared to iMovie, in the way that it edits and exports video. It can export as WMV (different sizes) and one flavor of AVI. iMovie can export as AVI (XviD and several other codecs), MOV (many codecs—DV, H.264, Sorenson, etc), MP4 (MPEG-4, H.264, etc) and more. iMovie's editing tools are far more sophisticated as well, as I hope this video will further demonstrate.
Please note: I am not an expert on iMovie or WMM, just an average consumer. I'm not trying to cover every nuance here—just a few things that are important to me.
I welcome rebuttals of this video, but if you're going to do it, please provide specific information and details on where I am wrong. I am here to learn, and if I have been mistaken in some of the information I present here, I would like to know.
