Chemical Imbalance
People with depression are often told that they have a chemical imbalance despite the fact that there is no medical test to detect such an imbalance.
Instead medications that effect different brain chemicals are basically thrown at a person randomly, dosages are changes, different drugs are tried, multiple medications are tried and finally electroshock therapy is used if the person failed to respond to the antidepressants.
Sharon talks about her experience with her doctor and psychiatrists telling her she had a chemical imbalance. She originally was prescribed antidepressants by her doctor for depression and was later referred to psychiatry. Before it was over, she took medications for 12 years and probably tried dozens of different psychotropic drugs. All the time she got worse, became suicidal and decided to get herself off the medications.
Now she as been off medications for 2 years is emotionally stable and living a happy life.

"Chemical Imbalance" is an original play by Lauren Wilson based on Robert Louis Stevenson's "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". In this comedy of horrors, director Matthew Graham Smith, an associate artist with the Dell'arte Company, leads a delightful ensemble of nine comic actors in the highly stylized conventions of farce and Grand Guignol (a theatrical genre akin to cinema's splatter-film). Their manic, highly physical and comedically disturbing romp through Dr. Jekyls schizophrenic journey has been described as "Rousing horror-farce...[that] comes through with both laughs and terror" (Laurie Bushman, SF Bay Times).
As in Stevenson's novel, the plot twists around a learned upper class doctor who experiments with a potion that neatly divides the good and bad sides of human nature. In Wilson's version of the tale, Victorian London is the seat of a global empire on the verge of collapse, one which relies on several forms of social repression to keep its home population under control while the empire expands abroad. Murder, mayhem, and crumpets abound in this romp through an empire on the verge of collapse and a man tight-rope-walking the line of aristocracy and depravity.

In the coming months, the U.S. Congress will vote up or down on trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, Peru, and Korea. These elected officials will not examine these agreements solely on their commercial or foreign policy benefits to the American people. They will also weigh whether or not each agreement advances particular human rights abroad. However, these Representatives proceed with little information about how trade agreements, and even trade per se, affect human rights at home or abroad. Although scholars, policymakers, and activists have long debated this relationship, in truth we know very little about it.
In the recently published book, Trade Imbalance, authors Susan Ariel Aaronson and Jamie M. Zimmerman shed much needed light on this complex issue. They use stories about frogs, chocolate, culture, tires and other topics to provide readers with new insights into the relationship between trade and human rights. They include the first study of how South Africa, Brazil, the United States, and the European Union struggle to coordinate trade and human rights objectives. They also look at how human rights issues are seeping into the WTO. Finally, Aaronson and Zimmerman also suggest ways in which policymakers can right the balance between their trade and human rights goals.
