Killer Hornets - Japan - 628 sec
Aug 2003 Japanese athletes have discovered a new source of strength -- hornet saliva. Killer hornets may be Japan's deadliest creature but they are also one of its most popular. They are considered a delicacy and turned into a potent sake. But perhaps the strangest use for them is on the Japanese gym scene. Their saliva, believed to provide a energy boost, has been turned into a sports drink and is creating a huge buzz.

Hornets' Big 3rd Quarter vs Spurs Game 5 Playoffs 2008 - 92 sec
NEW ORLEANS, May 13, 2008 (AP) -- Back pain couldn't keep David West from taking the court with aggression. The San Antonio Spurs couldn't stop him from dominating. "Back in the locker room, right before we break huddle and come out to the game, we said, 'No excuses,'" West recalled. "Regardless of how I was feeling, I just knew how important this game was for us as a basketball team. I knew I had to play well. I went out there with the intent to play well and things just went my way." Did they ever. West had career playoff highs of 38 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots, lifting New Orleans to a 101-79 victory over the Spurs on Tuesday night and a 3-2 series lead. New Orleans looked impressive in winning the first two games at home but stumbled in San Antonio. Back in the Big Easy, the Hornets cruised again. "We've proved all season long we're one of the better teams in the NBA," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "We had every reason after Games 3 and 4 to fold, but again, being with these guys, they've showed this type of resilience all season, so I'm not surprised." Chris Paul had 16 of his 22 points in the second half and added 14 assists for the Hornets, who've never advanced past the second round of the playoffs in the franchise's 20-year history. Manu Ginobili led San Antonio with 20 points and Tony Parker had 18. The Hornets held Tim Duncan to 10 points, though Duncan was a force on the glass with 23 rebounds. "They did a great job of crowding the paint and also getting back to our shooters," Duncan said of the Hornets' defenders. "They were very physical on the post. I didn't shoot the ball very well and those opportunities kind of turned into them running it back at us." Game 6 is Thursday night in San Antonio, where the Spurs are 5-0 in the postseason. The Hornets are now 6-0 in playoff games in New Orleans, where Game 7 would be, if necessary. Guarded mostly by Tyson Chandler, Duncan was 5-of-18 shooting, but Chandler left the game early in the fourth quarter with a bruised left foot. Meanwhile, a trainer put an ice pack on West's back after he left the game in the final minutes as the Hornets All-Star forward grimaced in pain. Scott said both were in obvious pain, but he did not expect either of them to miss the next game. "I landed funny and kind of lost feeling and couldn't really put pressure on it," Chandler said. "I didn't want to hurt the team by trying to be heroic. I'll be fine. I'll definitely be fine for the next game." West was dominant on both ends of the floor throughout despite his pain, with four of his blocks coming in the second half, one from behind the play on what seemed like a certain layup by Ime Udoka. "He wasn't 100 percent, but we couldn't tell. He was a beast out there," Hornets guard Morris Peterson said. "He played probably the best game of his career. His back was a little sore today, and I think it was carrying us so much during this game. He had us on his back all day." Peterson had 12 points for New Orleans on four 3-pointers, picking up the slack for Peja Stojakovic, who was guarded closely again. Stojakovic still managed a crucial transition 3 in the fourth quarter, however, giving the Hornets an 81-68 lead with 7:05 to go. San Antonio pulled to 85-77 on Udoka's third 3-pointer, but Paul responded with a driving layup with 4:33 left and scored again on a pass from West to turn back the Spurs' rally. Paul, who had six points in the first half, scored nine points and set up Chandler for an alley-oop dunk during a 20-4 Hornets run to open the third quarter. Peterson's 3 capped the surge, giving New Orleans a 64-51 lead. While Stojakovic managed only nine points, he recognized who had the hot hand. His pass to the corner set up Peterson's fourth 3, which put the Hornets ahead 68-54. Paul then added two free throws, giving him 12 for the quarter, and West scored his 30th point of the game on a jumper over Parker, giving the Hornets a 72-58 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Duncan was held scoreless until early the second quarter, but the Spurs hit their first four 3s and six of their first eight. Ginobili's second 3 put San Antonio up 37-30. West, who had 22 in the opening half, got New Orleans to 38-36 on a jumper late in the second quarter, then tied it at 43 when he put back a blocked fast-break layup. The Spurs took a 47-44 lead into halftime after Parker got up from a hard foul and sank two free throws in the final seconds. Then, as in the first two games of this series, the Hornets stormed ahead in the third quarter, this time outscoring San Antonio 28-11 in the decisive period. "The New Orleans defense was great tonight," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They played fantastic, especially in the third quarter and that's when they got away from us and that was the end of the game."

Bulls @ Hornets 88-89: Michael Jordan 33 points, 6 steals. - 273 sec
An athletic 33 points from MJ on efficient shooting. Bulls lost though on the game's last possession. I also included a few plays of MJ getting doubled and trapped to please the "MJ thrived in the isolation era" crowd. He faced multiple guys so many times in this game in fact that I could have made a 5 minute video on that alone. Commentary was in Spanish and there's a slight disturbance in the audio that I can't really explain. My apologies for that. Boxscore: http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/198812230CHH.html

Game 5 round 1 Mavs vs Hornets 2008 Playoffs - 210 sec
April 29, 2008 NEW ORLEANS -- David West stumbled toward the sideline after hitting a fadeaway as he was fouled, then turned toward the bench and slapped the extended hand of Hornets coach Byron Scott. It was an impromptu but fitting exchange between a player and coach who had plenty to celebrate on Tuesday night. On the day Scott was named NBA Coach of the Year for the first time, he gave fans in New Orleans another first: an NBA playoff series victory. Chris Paul had 24 points, 15 assists and 11 rebounds, and the Hornets held on for a 99-94 victory over the Dallas Mavericks to win their first-round series in five games. "That Coach of the Year award ... it wasn't a fluke," Paul said. "It's the frame of mind he puts us in. He gives us that ultimate confidence and he lets us play." West scored 25 points for New Orleans and Jannero Pargo had 17, while Tyson Chandler had 10 points and 14 rebounds. "A lot of people may be surprised with how this thing turned out, but we're not too surprised," West said. "Coach has a lot to do with that, his mentality. It's a trickle-down effect. We go out and we pride ourselves on competing." Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas with 22 points and 13 rebounds, and Devean George added 11 points in the fourth quarter as Dallas nearly pulled off an improbable comeback. The Mavs cut a 17-point deficit to three in the final seven minutes before Peja Stojakovic hit a pair of free throws to seal it with 5.7 seconds left. Tempers flared near the end, and Jerry Stackhouse was ejected for a second technical foul with 1:47 left after slapping the ball out of Paul's hands during a stoppage in play, then getting in a face-to-face standoff with West. Dallas never led and was hurt badly by an 11-1 Hornets run after Nowitzki's free throw had pulled the Mavs to 73-66 early in the fourth quarter. Dallas played solid defense on New Orleans' next possession, keeping the ball on the perimeter, but Pargo hit a deflating 3 at the shot clock buzzer. Pargo added a fast-break layup after rookie Julian Wright's steal on the other end. Paul then salvaged a botched alley-oop lob when he grabbed a loose ball and drained a baseline fade, and after West found Pargo cutting across the lane for a layup, New Orleans led 84-67 with seven minutes left. While the crowd was celebrating, Dallas regrouped and stormed back. The Mavs got as close as 97-94 after Brandon Bass, who had 11 points, hit two free throws with 33 seconds left. The Hornets ran down the shot clock before Paul missed a jumper. Chandler got a hand on the rebound and tapped it to the perimeter, where Paul corralled it and smartly got the ball quickly to Stojakovic, the Hornets' best free-throw shooter, who finished with 11 points. Dallas was unable to score again, and the Hornets raised their arms as the buzzer sounded, the crowd went wild and streamers shot down from the rafters. Dallas must now decide what to do after its blockbuster trade for Jason Kidd yielded only a noncompetitive first-round playoff exit. That could include deciding whether to retain coach Avery Johnson, who's never won fewer than 51 games in any of his three full regular seasons but whose squads have had two straight first-round playoff losses since losing to Miami in the finals three seasons ago. Kidd finished with 14 points and nine assists, while Jason Terry had 13 points and Josh Howard 12 for the Mavericks. Stackhouse had 11 points. "We're better than what we showed this series," Nowitzki said. "The summer is going to be long. ... You don't want to say stuff when you're emotional and disappointed. ... You've got to look at what you can do to make the team better. We've got to look at it this summer again, but it's not the time now." Nowitzki gave mixed reviews to the Kidd trade, which cost the Mavericks young point guard Devin Harris, a former first-round draft choice. "Honestly, things didn't look great before the trade. It would have been a struggle to get into the playoffs either way, so we just went for it," Nowitzki said. "Sometimes you have to take some risks in this business. We went for one of the best point guards ever to play this game. ... For some reason, we never got clicking the way we wanted to." Johnson didn't say anything about his future with the team, other than to say he expects to be in meetings soon concerning how to improve the squad. The Hornets shot nearly 54 percent in the first half and took their first double-digit lead in the first quarter at 24-13. Dallas battled back to tie it at 32 when Stackhouse hit an acrobatic fast-break layup as he was being pulled to the floor on a hard foul by Pargo, but the Mavs never took the lead and the Hornets began to pull away again when Pargo hit a 3. Pargo's jumper several possessions later ignited a 17-3 run to close the second quarter and the Hornets led 54-39 at halftime.

Spurs-Hornets 82-101 Game1 PO 08[Parker 23pts vs West 30pts] - 172 sec
NEW ORLEANS, May 3, 2008 (AP) -- Hornets coach Byron Scott showed off the three championship rings he won as a player during his pregame speech. The message? This is what the San Antonio Spurs have, and you want. He certainly got through to All-Stars David West and Chris Paul. West scored a career playoff-high 30 points to lead New Orleans to a 101-82 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series Saturday night. Paul added 17 points, 13 assists and four steals for New Orleans, which trailed by as much as 11 in the first half but stormed into the lead for good in the third quarter. "It sort of gives you goose bumps," Paul said of seeing Scott's rings, won in the 1980s with the Los Angeles Lakers. "We understand right now we're on that same journey and we feel like we can get there." One reason they're off to such a good start against San Antonio is the way they played defense on Spurs center Tim Duncan. Duncan had what he considered one of the worst games of his stellar career, going 1-of-9 from the field for a career playoff-low five points and only three rebounds. "Things just didn't go my way," said Duncan, who offered only a few terse comments in the locker room. "They did a great job. ... I played badly, so credit to them." Tyson Chandler was Duncan's primary defender, but the Hornets also swarmed Duncan with double teams throughout the game, forcing San Antonio to look for points from outside. The Spurs hit 12 3-pointers in the game, but also missed 19. The Hornets dominated the inside, outrebounding San Antonio 50-34 and outscoring the Spurs 46-26 in the paint. The Hornets also shot 50 percent, while the Spurs finished at 40.8 percent. Chandler had 10 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots for New Orleans. Peja Stojakovic added 22 points for the Hornets on 9-of-15 shooting, while reserve Bonzi Wells added 10 points, all but two in the fourth quarter. Tony Parker led the Spurs with 23 points and Manu Ginobili had 19. Bruce Bowen added 17 points and Michael Finley 13, but San Antonio needed more help inside from Duncan and Kurt Thomas, who had only two points and two rebounds. "They took away our inside game. Timmy had a rough night," Parker said. "We need to do a better job to get him the ball and try to get him some shots, basically. Tonight, New Orleans did a good job to take that away from us. That's not Timmy." After trailing most of the first half, the Hornets surged into the lead for good with a 13-0 run in the third quarter that opened with Chandler's driving layup and ended with Stojakovic's second 3-pointer of the game, giving New Orleans a 61-54 lead. West scored four points during the run and 11 in the quarter, often hitting midrange jumpers, sometimes while fading away from a defender in his face. "David West is the one that really, really hurt us tonight," Parker said. "He made outside shots, and once he made his outside shots he was having the drive, so we can't all focus on Chris Paul." The Hornets led 74-66 heading into the fourth quarter. Jacque Vaughn's driving layup got the Spurs as close as 76-71 early in the period, but the Hornets, despite being in the playoffs for the first time in four years, were not rattled. They pushed the lead back up to double digits before turning it into a blowout during the last 5 minutes, with Paul scoring seemingly at will. "We've been in that position where everyone is kind of waiting for the wheels to fall off of this thing, feeling like we are overachieving," West said. "But we're a hungry group of guys, we're going to go out and compete." The Hornets scored the first eight points of the game, with Stojakovic and Morris Peterson each hitting 3s, and San Antonio didn't have a point until Parker's free throws with 7:36 left in the first quarter. It didn't take long for the San Antonio to settle down, however, and they didn't need much help from Parker or Duncan. Ginobili hit his first four shots, including three 3s, and Bowen hit three 3s of his own as the Spurs stormed back to take a 27-23 lead at the end of the first quarter. New Orleans fought back to take a 35-34 lead on Chandler's alley-oop dunk of Paul's lob, but Bowen, who minutes earlier had been face down on the floor with his hands over his face after apparently getting poked in the eye on foul by Wells, hit two more 3s, one while being fouled. Finley had another 3 during a 10-0 run that put San Antonio up 44-35. The Spurs finished the first half 9-for-17 on 3s, and with a 49-45 lead.
