Demonstration of one of the simplest and most useful techniques for grafting fruit trees. A 'pencil' of the scion wood, variety Queen Cox in this case, is used from storage, these need to be cut while the wood is winter-dormant e.g. February, and stored cool and not too dry. I usually put them in a plastic bag in the fridge. LABEL carefully. The right time to graft is bud burst to early green leaf, roughly April. This was done on the last day of a warm southern English March.
Any very sharp knife with a thin blade will do, my favourite is the Opinel 'inoxidable'(stainless) number 6 (number refers to size, Opinel make a range of knives.) My one has a walnut handle and I bought it in Bayeux, which is completely irrelevant! it must feel comfortable in your hand. The knife must be sharp enough to cut you badly or it is not sharpe enough for purpose, so be careful. Note the trick of locking thumbs together and levering the knife through the wood, it reduces the risk of slipping and cutting yourself. Practice with waste wood (e.g. prunings) to get the fit right. This technique really works well, I'll prove it!
NB the rootstocks here are MM106, and are growing in a row where I cut down some unwanted and over-large rootstocks and allowed new growths to shoot up from the stump. I then earthed these up and selected the best growths to make my own vehgetatively propagated rootstocks. This is a good way to produce new trees, but the saddle graft cn be used equally well to top work over an established tree to a different variety. I will show other grafting techniques in a forthcoming video.

As the face matures over the years, facial fat loss contributes to a hollow, sunken look that typifies the aged countenance. The analogy of the full grape that begins to transform into a shriveled raisin may be helpful in understanding the process of volume loss that affects the face. Transferring fat from your thighs or belly to the areas that have lost fat in the face, like the brow, lower eyelid, cheek, and jawline can restore the youthful vitality of your face. The rind graft is a useful technique for grafting over a sound but unwanted apple tree to one of a preferred variety. Same for pears. You may wish to do this after moving into a new home where there is an apple you don't like, or if you have been mis-sold an apple which was not the variety you wanted (this has happened to us twice) or if you just discover a variety which you much prefer to one that is growing in your garden or orchard.
With all kinds of grafting, the principles are the same. Cut the scion (preferred variety) wood in late winter, store somewhere cool and not too dry (in a polythene bag in the fridge is ideal) then carry out grafting operation in early spring when the new leaves are beginning to come out. Cambium to cambium contact is key.
Before attempting any sort of grafting, practice the technique with a small very sharp knife (I favour the Opinel number 6 stainless) on waste wood until you become reasonably good at shaping the pieces to fit together well. Good timing, clean cuts that fit, cleanliness, and correct wound sealing are key.

For the Ultimate Accountant, is God. He balances people, and He balances the time for the people to freely choose whether they want Him.. or not. So, we've all heard "grafting-in" of Church. But what does it mean? Replacing, the lost. Balancing. For Perfection to exist, and particularly a FREE Perfection, one of the parameters must be a perfection in NUMBER. Here, number of beings. God being Perfect, first foreknew what perfect numbers there would be in any configuration of beings, so when He designed the angels, He made a given NUMBER of them, based on what would freely be a perfect NUMBER.
So when 1/3rd of the angels rebel against Him, He also foreknows how the creation of humanity will BALANCE to their rejection, such that in some configuration at ANY MOMENT IN TIME, a perfect NUMBER will still obtain.
For us humans, the necessary population permutation calculations required, is mind-boggling. But not, for God.
So God's Design for all history is to freely produce that NUMBER. Always a balancing between those who reject and those who believe in Him, since in eternity the beings in heaven remain free, yet will never choose to sin again.
Secular math displays all this in many paradigmal ways. Think of atomic physics, beta coefficients, leverage, differential calculus, vector analysis, equilibrium, price theory, Malthusian population theory, quantum physics versus general relativity, recombinant DNA and other RNA-DNA interactions, even the Sims game. When a NUMBER is too low, there is no or insufficient interaction, the isolation being too great. But when a NUMBER is too high, then the lack of isolation works against, and destruction occurs. So it's kinda like a bell curve, trying to find optimality, where the NUMBER is "just right". Yeah, like Goldilocks and the three bears' porridge!

Grafting is easy, it can enable you to change the variety of fruit a tree bears. This technique, also known as top working enables you to replace a tree with fruit you don't like with a preferable fruit. Since posting this I have put up videos showing several techniques of grafting -saddle graft, rind graft and cleft graft. You are now (mid April) too late to graft trees for 2007/2008, but you can practice on spare wood and think and research about what if any grafting you would like to do next season.
PS one useful aplpication of grafting is pollination. If you have a tree which is infertile due to lack of a pollination partner, you can graft a few bits of wood from a compatible pollen partner in to it.
This is a video of an apple tree which was successfully top worked over to a better variety a year ago to show the usefulness of the technique.
