Seit Jahrzehnten ist Afrikas ungeheurer Artenreichtum durch die Rodung der Regenwälder und die rücksichtslose Ausbeutung natürlicher Ressourcen bedroht. Doch ein kleines Land im Westen des Schwarzen Kontinents stemmt sich der scheinbar unaufhaltsam voranschreitenden Zerstörung entgegen: Die Regierung von Gabun glaubt nicht daran, dass Abholzung und Ölförderung die einzigen Mittel sind, um ihrem verarmten Land wieder auf die Beine zu helfen. Stattdessen setzt das mit 5,1 Einwohnern pro Quadratkilometer nur äußerst dünn besiedelte Land auf die Anziehungskraft einer unberührten Natur: Im August 2002 unterzeichnete Omar Bongo Ondimba, Präsident von Gabun, Dekrete zur Errichtung von 13 Nationalparks. Mit der Einrichtung dieser Schutzzonen kann nicht nur der außerordentliche biologische Reichtum der Wälder, der abgelegenen Gebirge und der Binnen- und Küstengewässer Gabuns auf Dauer geschützt werden -- sie sollen langfristig auch den Ökotourismus ankurbeln und so dringend benötigte Devisen ins Land bringen. Doch sowohl der Regierung als auch den beteiligten Experten ist eines klar: Wenn es ihnen nicht gelingt, die Nationalparks innerhalb weniger Jahre zu einer profitablen Einnahmequelle zu machen, werden sie das Land wieder den Holzfällern und Ölunternehmen überlassen müssen. Es ist ein Rennen gegen die Zeit, bei dem nichts weniger auf dem Spiel steht als der Erhalt eines der letzten Naturparadiese unseres Planeten...
