Like Mad, it was a black-and-white newsstand publication in a magazine format and thus did not require the approval or seal of the Comics Code Authority. Each issue's stories were introduced by the host character, Cousin Eerie. Its sister publications were Creepy and Vampirella.
The first issue, in early 1966, had only a small limited 200-issue run of an "ashcan" edition. With a logo by Ben Oda, it was created overnight by editor Archie Goodwin and letterer Gaspar Saladino to establish publisher Jim Warren's ownership of the title when it was discovered that a rival publisher would be using the name. Warren explained, "We launched Eerie because we thought Creepy ought to have an adversary. The Laurel and Hardy syndrome always appealed to me. Creepy and Eerie are like Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre."
Official distribution began with the second issue (March, 1966), priced at 35 cents. Behind the Frank Frazetta cover were graphic horror tales edited by Goodwin and hosted by the lumpish Cousin Eerie, a curious character created by Jack Davis. With scripts by Goodwin, E. Nelson Bridwell and Larry Ivie, the second issue featured art by Gene Colan, Johnny Craig, Reed Crandall, Bill Draut, Jerry Grandenetti, John Severin, Angelo Torres and Alex Toth. Other artists during this era included Wally Wood, Gray Morrow, Al Williamson, Neal Adams, Dan Adkins, and Steve Ditko. Eerie was published on a bi-monthly basis.
Goodwin would eventually resign as the editor of Eerie after issue 11 in September 1967. Due to a lack of funds, the majority of the magazine's well known artists departed, and Warren was forced to rely on reprints, which would be prevalent in the magazine until issue 26 in March 1970. Editors during this period included Bill Parente and publisher Jim Warren himself. Things would pick up starting in 1969 with the premiere of Vampirella magazine. Some of Eerie's original artists including Frazetta, Crandall and Wood would return, as would Goodwin, as Associate Editor for issues 29 through 33.
Eerie's Second Golden Age
A variety of editors would continue to manage Eerie after Goodwin's second departure including Billy Graham and J.R. Cochran. William Dubay, who first joined Warren as an artist in 1970 would become editor of the magazine for issues 43 through 72. During this period the frequency of Eerie and Warren's other magazines was upped to nine issues per year. Color stories would begin appearing in Eerie starting with issue 54 in February 1974. Another major development occurred in late 1971 when artists from the Barcelona Studio of Spanish agency Selecciones Illustrada started appearing in Eerie and other Warren magazines. Artists from Spain would go on to dominate Eerie and the other Warren magazines throughout the 70's. These artists included Esteban Maroto, Jaime Brocal, Rafael Aura Leon, Martin Salvador, Luis Garcia, Jose Gonzalez, Jose Bea, Isidro Mones, Manuel Sanjulian and Enrich Torres. Additional artists from S.I.'s Valencia Studio joined Warren in 1974 including Jose Ortiz, Luis Bermejo, and Leopold Sanchez. Towards the end of Dubay's time as editor, artists from Eerie's first golden era including Alex Toth and John Severin returned. Notable writers during Dubay's era as editor included Gerry Boudreau, Budd Lewis, Jim Stenstrum and Doug Moench.
Dubay would resign after issue 72 and was replaced by Louise Jones, his former assistant. Jones would edit the magazine until issue 110 in April 1980. Former DC Comics publisher Carmine Infantino would also join Warren shortly after she became editor. Much like the wave of Spanish artists that dominated Eerie throughout the mid-1970's, a number of artists from the Philippines would join Warren during Jones's period as editor including Alex Nino, Alfredo Alcala and Rudy Nebres and would remain at Eerie until its end in 1983. "The Rook", a super hero who first appeared in issue 82 in March 1977 would appear in nearly every issue of the magazine over the next two years and would eventually be given his own magazine. While he had resigned as editor, Dubay remained with Warren and became their dominant writer during this period. Another dominant writer during this period was Bruce Jones.
After Louise Jones resigned as editor following issue 110, Dubay returned to edit the magazine using the alias "Will Richardson" until issue 120. After Dubay's departure various editors including Chris Adames, Timothy Moriarty held the position. Reprints would once again start predominantly appearing in the magazine, with many reprint issues being dedicated to a single artist. Eerie's last issue published would be issue 139 in February 1983 when Warren went bankrupt. We caught the 11 am boat across to Alcatraz Island. Alcatraz Cruises is the only cruise company that takes you across to Alcatraz Island and lets you off on the island which is now part of the National Park Service. Departure is from Pier 33, and it takes just about 10 to 15 minutes to get across. During our boat trip we enjoyed a beautiful view of downtown San Francisco, the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge and the mountainous communities on the north and east side of San Francisco Bay.
We arrived at the ferry dock where a National Park Ranger provided us with a brief overview of things to see and do on the island. We then took in a 15 minute video that gave us a great summary of the island and its fascinating history. From 1850 onwards, Alcatraz Island was the location of a citadel, and it also housed the first lighthouse on the West Coast, built in 1854. In 1909 it became a military prison and in 1933 it finally was converted into the infamous maximum security penitentiary that it is known for all over the world.
Starting my walk, I stopped in a room that displays posters and information about the 1969 to 1971 Native American Occupation of Alcatraz. I then snapped photos all along my walk to the famous Cell Blocks, caught some gorgeous view across the bay and was morbidly fascinated by the run-down morgue that held deceased prisoners from 1933 to 1963, the year the prison was finally closed. The highlight of any trip to Alcatraz is a visit of the four cellblocks that housed 390 cells, all designed for single prisoners, which were actually better conditions than in many other penitentiaries of the time.
After getting equipped with headsets and a recorder, I followed the excellent narration of the audio tour that featured the voices of real former prison guards and former inmates. The audio tour was a fabulous way of creating a self-guided tour where you could stop and linger at any of the destinations to look at them up close. I stopped frequently to snap hundreds of pictures.
The tour features many stops, including the large dining room and kitchen, the intake-area where new inmates got changed from their street clothing into prison garb, the prison library and the main cellblocks with their tiny cells, all equipped with a metal bunk, a small wash basin and toilet bowl. The corridors separating cellblocks B and C is named Broadway, another corridor is called Michigan Avenue and the area in front of the dining room was referred to as Times Square. Several of the cells were furnished to show what they would have looked like when the prison was still in operation. The location of the famous 1942 Battle of Alcatraz and the cells were several prison guards were killed was signposted.
The cells housing Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin, location of the most famous escape attempt in Alcatraz' history, were also furnished to provide an authentic demonstration of the escape. The cells showcased the papier-maché dummies that used to disguise the inmates' disappearance, and the small tunnels, hand-carved with metal spoons, that successfully took the prisoners into an unguarded utility tunnel and from there off the island. The three prisoners or their bodies were never found, and to this day there are diverging theories that presume that the escaped inmates either drowned or made their way all across to Latin America. A segment of the Discovery Channel's "MythBusters" TV series proved that the escape could have indeed succeeded.
I also examined the Control Room and the visitation area as well as the outside space at the southern end of the cell block building which features a lighthouse and the ruins of the former Warden's House which burned down in 1970. After checking out the many souvenirs in the gift shop I made my way back down to the ferry dock, past another set of ruined buildings which include the recreation hall and the Coast Guard quarter.
Alcatraz is a truly fascinating destination, and the stories of its famous inmates (Al Capone, Robert Stroud -- the Birdman of Alcatraz, George "Machine Gun" Kelly and many others) make your hair stand on end.
Just before 2 pm we caught another ferry back to the mainland, and after a quick lunch at Pier 39 we were ready for another adventure: a bike ride to Golden Gate Park.
