Dorothea Tanning (born August 25, 1910) is an American painter, printmaker, sculptor and writer. She has also designed sets and costumes for ballet and theatre.
Born in Galesburg, Illinois, Tanning lived in Paris for twenty-eight years. Having moved to New York, she exhibited with the Julien Levy Gallery prior to meeting the German painter Max Ernst in 1942; she married Ernst four years later (becoming his fourth wife, after Luise Straus-Ernst in 1918, Marie-Berthe Aurenche in 1927 and Peggy Guggenheim in 1942). Ernst introduced her to the circle of the Surrealists. Her best-known work, Eine kleine Nachtmusik (a dark painting laden with symbolism; ironically named after Mozart's light-hearted serenade), shows that she became a member of that group for a while, but later her painting style became prismatic and lyrical.
During her 95th year, a New York gallery published a new monograph entitled Dorothea Tanning: Insomnias 1955--1965. Her most recent museum exhibition was organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, entitled Birthday and Beyond, and mounted in 2000 to mark their acquisition of Tanning's celebrated 1942 self-portrait, Birthday.
In the 1940s, when she was one of the painters in Julien Levy's stable, Tanning painted within the idiom of surrealist representation. By the mid-50s, her work had radically changed. As Tanning explains, "Around 1955 my canvases literally splintered . . . I broke the mirror, you might say." Insomnias (Moderna Museet, Stockholm) — the group takes its name from a painting of the same title that Tanning made in 1957 — are forays into the realm of conjured energies. They represent a forceful shift at a particular, postwar moment that continues to reverberate today. In his essay for Dorothea Tanning: Insomnias, Charles Stuckey describes these "seemingly multidimensional mindspaces" as "among the most ambitious and sophisticated paintings to address the dilemmas of imagination and culture in a new atomic, space-race age."
Following her retrospective at the Centre Pompideau organized by Pontus Hultén in 1974, Tanning returned to New York in 1978 following the death of her husband. In her tenth decade, Tanning frequently has been publishing poetry in The New Yorker, and is completing several books. Her most recent novel is Chasm.

"Die Lorelei" is a German folk song based upon a poem which was written by the Jewish-German poet, Heinrich Heine.
This song is so beloved by the German people that it was impossible even during the Nazi period for the Nazis to censor this song from the people. The only thing that the Nazis could do was
to say that the author was "unknown."
The music of the song was written by Friedrich Silcher (1789-1860).
In the poem it is said that there was a beautiful woman, who used to sit and sing from the top of a cliff, which is located on the right bank of the Rhine River. Her singing and her beauty were so seductive that the sailors, who were passing the dangerous cliff, could not take there eyes off of her. Then they and their ships were smashed against the rocks of the Lorelei.

The lyrics of this Hebrew song were written by Ehut Manor and the music by Nurit Hirah. It was written before 1948, when Israel was still being ruled by the British. I sang this song in a concert on the second day of Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) in hopes that the year 5768 will be even better than last year for all of us.

The prayer -- Shemah Kolenu -- is part of the daily "Selichot Service" of the Jewish
people. The word -- Selichot -- comes from the Hebrew word -- Salach -- which means "fogiveness." Every day of the year, except on the Sabbath and on the Jewish New Year -- Rosh Hashanah - these prayers of forgiveness (including Shemah Kolenu) are recited in the Jewish liturgy.
On Yom Kippur -- the most holy day of the year for the Jewish people -- the Ark (where the Torah is kept) is opened for the entire recitation of the Selichot Service. The people, who are able to stand, do so for the entire service. Sometimes this service may last as long as one hour long.
The composers of these supplications of the Selichot Service are among the most notable of Talmudic times. The central message of the Selichot Service lie in the thirteen attributes of "Divine Mercy." In other words, in accordance with Jewish tradition each sin committed by a person can actually be removed by an equal "good deed." Therefore, no sin (according to Jewish Law) is unforgivable, since G-d is greater than any sin that mankind is capable of committing.
During this prayer -- Shemah Kolenu -- the Ark is opened and the entire congregation stands. The cantor sings with fervour and passion these words:
ENGLISH TRANSLATION-
"Hear our voice, Hashem, our G-d, have pity and compassion on us,
and accept our prayer.
Bring us back, Hashem, and we shall return to You, renew our days as of old.
Hear our words, Hashem, perceive our thoughts.
May they find favor -- the expressions of our mouth and the thoughts of our heart --
before You, Hashem, our Rock and our Redeemer.
Do not cast us away from your presence,
and do not take from us the spirit of your holiness.

forsake us not when our strength does fail us.

Dorothea Fayne (Mezzo-Soprano) sings the negro spiritual -- Amazing Grace - à cappella.
As it is the Jewish custom to leave small stones on the graveside of someone, whom you never knew, that is what Dorothea is doing here with the stones. In the Jewish tradition visitors leave stones at the graveside instead of flowers as a symbol of permanence. Additionally, in Biblical times graves were actually marked with these mounds of stones. So, by placing the stones on the grave (or by replacing them), one perpetuates both the memory of the deceased and very existence of the grave itself.

Mary Ann Evans, better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist. She was one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Her novels, largely set in provincial England, are well known for their realism and psychological perspicacity.

The novel is notable for its deep psychological insight and sophisticated character portraits.

The song speaks about Spanish ships that were to have come with military help to Ireland to save the people from the English invasion, when the Irish Earl's had run away and left the people to fend for themselves. There is even a mention of the Pope, who could have intervened during this hard time. None of that ever happened, because Hugh O'Donnell (Second Earl of Tyrone) and Red Hugh O'Donnell (First Earl of Tyrconnell) both died while in exile. In the end the people stayed loyal to their land, just like a true lover -- The Dark Rose.
