For all those that seem to think Paul is a pro in disguise, please realise the following.
- Bath Opera is an amateur opera company staging a small number of productions a few times each year.
- Paul has performed in just 4 four productions with this company
- Paul has attended some masterclasses in Italy. These courses are designed for talented amateurs. All of these are paid for by those attending.
- A few masterclasses, even one with the great man do not constitute "a formal opera training" by any stretch of the imagination.
- Professional opera singers earn their living by treading the boards night after night week-in week-out, year after year with professional opera companies.
- Paul, has never earned a single penny from opera performance, other than winning a tv talent show in 1999 - the winnings funding masterclasses.
- Paul has not performed since 2003.
- He is not a professional opera singer pretending to be a mobile phone sales man, but rather he is a mobile phone salesman aspiring to be an opera singer.
- An operatic voice IS a trained voice.
Hmmmm, perhaps if I can buy a few classes at a pro cookery school, I can pass myself off as a highly experienced pro chef.....hmmmmm......

Fantasía violín Nessum Dorma "Turandot"
Paganini, Wieniawski, Sarasate, Heifetz...todos ellos fueron violinistas que escribieron obras maestras virtuosas basadas en melodías famosas de óperas populares. Se ha dicho que el violín es el instrumento musical que más se parece a la voz humana.
Es por ello que no debe sorprendernos el hecho de que aquellos grandes violinistas quisieran darse el gusto con sus óperas favoritas. El elemento común entre sus diferentes arreglos musicales es la propensión a presumir por medio de sus técnicas especiales e individuales. Invariablemente, las melodías de óperas derivarán en deslumbrantes trucos violinísticos, los cuales constituyen un tradicional objeto de admiración.
Parecería inadecuado simplemente tocar el violín como cantaría un cantante; por ello, sería interesante saber si aquellos violinistas, allá por sus días, sintieron la necesidad de calificar como "popular" o "comercial" las ejecuciones de sus pares, según la dificultad de las mismas y si recurrían a difíciles solos de violín como un método de desafiar las críticas.
Muchos de esos arreglos de violín permanecen firmes en el repertorio de violinistas modernos, no solo por su rasgo de ser algunas de las más gloriosas melodías de óperas, sinó también porque la inventiva a la hora de escribir las secciones para violín, continúa proporcionando un estimulante desafío para todos.
Vanessa Mae volvió a esa tradición del tiempo de los consagrados violinistas para su transcripción de las melodías de la ópera de Puccini "Turandot".
La ópera cuenta la historia de una cruel princesa china cuya belleza era tal que muchos deseaban su mano en matrimonio. Sin embargo, ella insistió en que para alcanzar el éxito, los pretendientes debían responder correctamente tres acertijos. Quien fallara en la prueba, sería ejecutado. Muchos hombres murieron por eso.
El príncipe Calaf, héroe de la historia, era el hijo del exiliado Rey de Tartar. Como muchos otros antes que él, Calaf cayó víctima de la belleza de Turandot y, contra todos los consejos, se ubicó primero para la prueba de los tres acertijos. Tuvo éxito, pero descubrió que, haber ganado su mano de esa manera no era suficiente para ganar su corazón. Ella trató de echarse atrás sobre lo acordado pero, aunque su padre, el Emperador, insistió en que ella debía cumplir su promesa, el príncipe Calaf, muy galantemente le ofreció una chance de evitar el matrimonio.
Con la condición de que ella adivinara su verdadero nombre por la mañana, él la dejaría romper su promesa y ella tendría derecho a ejecutarlo. Inmediatamente, la princesa decretó la prohibición de dormir para todos sus súbditos con el objeto de maximizar la ayuda para poder descubrir el nombre de Calaf.
En este punto de la ópera Calaf canta la famosa Nessun Dorma (Nadie debe dormir), proclamando su voto de amor, el que ella sólo podría conocer su nombre de sus propios labios y para entonces sería su esposa. Incluso luego de un gran esfuerzo, Turandot no fue capaz de descubrir el verdadero nombre del príncipe Calaf y de esa manera el voto de amor de Calaf se cumplió.
La fantasía abre muy dramáticamente como si testimoniara una ejecución. Los arreglos de Vanessa Mae se entrelazaron dentro y fuera de algunas de las mas hermosas melodías de ópera, usando diferentes ideas violinísticas. El uso inesperado de sordina (mudo) en la sección intermedia agregó una pintoresca y delicada calidad aún más oriental que el original e hizo la magia de la música, como hace su sensitivo tratamiento de "Nessun Dorma" que se construye para la triunfante declaración de amor de los momentos finales.
El trabajo fue estrenado en una extasiada sala llena el 18 de junio de 1997 en el Hampton Court Palace por Vanessa Mae en violín, con la orquesta de la Royal Opera House dirigida por Viktor Fedotov.
