"Ancient Music of Ireland", a book by the early collector George Petrie (1789-1866) published in 1855, is the first appearance of this tune in print. It is not given a title in that collection. The tune was provided to him by a "Miss J. Ross, of N.-T.-Limavady, in the county of Londonderry" and a plaque at her house today acknowledges this. Miss J. Ross said the tune was "very old".
Beyond these facts, in ascertaining the tune's origins, is all speculation.

I got this clip off a VHS tape of the 1995 PBS documentary "Danny Boy - In Sunshine or in Shadow". UK TV folks interviewed Eric about the tune and filmed him in Olympic Studios, London, performing the number on guitar. "Danny Boy" has never been released on a full-length CD of Eric's. However, it was included as a bonus track on his 1992 CD single "Change The World".

Hank Locklin (born Lawrence Hankins Locklin, February 15, 1918, in McLellan, Florida) is an American country music singer-songwriter.
Born in the Florida Panhandle, he is one of country music's Honky Tonk singers. He first recorded for 4 Star Records. A member of the Grand Ole Opry, Locklin's biggest hits include "Send Me the Pillow That You Dream On", "Geisha Girl", and "Please Help Me I'm Falling", which went to No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop music chart. Billboard Magazine's 100th Anniversary issue also listed it as the second most successful country single of the Rock and Roll era.
Locklin has a fanclub situated in Langeli, Bjerkreim, Norway.
Locklin had a strong following in Europe, and in Ireland - his popularity was such that in 1963 he recorded an album called Irish Songs Country Style.
Other hits for Locklin included, "Happy Journey" (1961), "Happy Birthday To Me" (1962), and "The Country Hall Of Fame" (1968).
In 2006, he appeared on the PBS special, Country Pop Legends in which he performed "Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On", and "Please Help Me I'm Falling".
As of 2008, he is the oldest living member of the Grand Ole Opry at the age of 90.
Recently released his 65th album, "By the Grace of God", a collection of gospel songs.

JIM REEVES MEMORIAL
"Gentleman" Jim Reeves, famous for velvet voice, died in a plane crash on July 31, 1964. A life-sized sculpture of the famous singer marks his grave on a one-acre, tree-covered plot of ground three miles east of Carthage,Texas on U.S. Highway 79. Thousands of visitors from every state and many foreign countries have visited the site.
In 1967, his favorite dog Cheyenne was buried inside the concrete circle surrounding the grave of his former master just a few feet to one side and to the rear, in just about the same position Cheyenne would have assumed in following his master.
