Rufaqa' Corporation telah didaftarkan sebagai syarikat perniagaan pada tahun 1997 oleh bekas pemimpin Al-Arqam Ustaz Haji Ashaari Muhammad bersama dengan ahli keluarganya. Berbeza dengan ABIM, PAS dan JIM yang mengambil koperasi sebagai wadah perniagaan Islam mereka, Ustaz Ashaari Muhammad memilih syarikat perniagaan sebagai wadah melanjutkan usaha perniagaan Islam yang diasaskannya melalui gerakan Al-Arqam dahulu[19]. Perniagaan Al-Arqam yang telah bermula pada tahun 1997 dan telah berkembang ke peringkat antarabangsa telah turut musnah dengan pengharaman Al-Arqam di Malaysia pada tahun 1994[20]. Selepas pengharaman ini, bekas-bekas ahli Al-Arqam di Malaysia berpecah kepada empat kumpulan[21]. Pertama, golongan yang hilang keyakinan terhadap perjuangan Islam cara Al-Arqam; kedua, golongan yang tinggal di atas pagar dan mengambil sikap tunggu dan lihat di mana ada keuntungan; ketiga, golongan yang terus yakin dengan perjuangan Islam tetapi berdiam diri kerana tidak mampu meneruskannya; dan keempat, golongan yang yakin dengan perjuangan Islam dan terus mengekalkan cara hidup Islam walaupun hanya di peringkat keluarganya, umpamanya dengan mengekalkan pengamalan syariat dan tarbiyyah, membaca dan menghayati Al-Qur`an dan Hadith, mempelajari dan mengamalkan ilmu fardhu `ain dan sebagainya[22].
Rufaqa` Corporation lahir dari golongan yang keempat ini, yakni dari keluarga bekas pemimpin Al-Arqam Ustaz Haji Ashaari Muhammad sendiri. Dengan empat orang isteri, 35 orang anak, 26 orang menantu dan 123 orang cucu, Ustaz Ashaari Muhammad mempunyai cukup tenaga untuk memulakan perniagaan Rufaqa`. Apabila syarikat Rufaqa' Corporation didaftarkan, Ustaz Ashaari Muhammad sendiri menjadi Pengerusi Eksekutifnya manakala beberapa orang anak dan menantunya menganggotai Lembaga Pengarahnya.
Seperti Al-Arqam, Rufaqa' juga berpegang kepada tujuan perniagaan sebagai hendak memperbesar, memperpanjang dan memperluaskan aktiviti syariat atau bertujuan ibadah dan mendapat pahala yang banyak dengan sentiasa mencari keredhaan Allah SWT melalui niat dan kaedah pelaksanaan yang betul. Bagi Rufaqa', perniagaan mempunyai syariat dan ibadahnya yang sangat luas. Umpamanya disebutkan bahawa melalui perniagaan, mereka akan mendapat kawan, memberi khidmat kepada masyarakat, mendirikan kerjasama, memudahkan masyarakat mengurus keperluan hidup, menyelamatkan barangan keluaran masyarakat Islam, mengumpul pengalaman sama ada dari segi pengurusan, mengenal tempat, barangan dan sebagainya, melatih dan mengamalkan sifat sabar, berlapang dada, bertolak ansur, memberi dan meminta maaf, berlebih kurang, bersimpati, memajukan agama, bangsa dan negara, berpeluang mengeluarkan zakat, dan menyediakan peluang pekerjaan (Rufaqa' Corporation t.t.a).Secara lebih tersusun, tabloid bulanan Rufaqa`, Ana (Mac 2001:7), menyenaraikan dua belas peluang tujuan berniaga seperti berikut:
1- Dapat berkhidmat dan menyediakan khidmat kepada masyarakat;
2- Dapat menyediakan makan minum serta keperluan asas yang halal;
3- Dapat menjalinkan hubungan persahabatan di antara penjual dan pembeli;
4- Dapat bekerjasama dan bantu membantu di antara satu sama lain;
5- Dapat belajar untuk bertolak ansur dan mengalah dengan orang;
6- Dapat melatih diri untuk sabar serta berharap kepada Allah SWT melalui ujian di dalam perniagaan;
7- Dapat berlatih untuk belapang dada dan memaafkan orang dalam menghadapi karenah pelanggan;
8- Dapat menyediakan peluang pekerjaan kepada orang ramai;
9- Dapat membantu memasarkan barangan orang Islam;
10- Dapat menegakkan syiar Islam melalui kemajuan yang dibangunkan melalui perniagaan;
11- Dapat membantu fakir miskin serta orang yang memerlukan; dan
12- Dapat menunaikan kewajipan zakat.

cancer, birth defects and other toxic effects. Another externality is harm to the biosphere

The beginning of the modern corporation is detailed starting with Ray Anderson, the CEO of Interface, the world's largest modular carpet manufacturer. He explains that the corporation began in 1712, when Thomas Newcomen invented a steam driven pump to increase the productivity and output of coal mines. The desire to increase product output per man hour, be it steel, pens, or computer chips, led to the modern corporation and the modern industrialized world. Noam Chomsky then explains the historical function of a corporation. In the past, individual states in the United States issued charters which stipulated what, where, and for how long a corporation could last in order to protect the public good. Richard Grossman states that in early America, the common viewpoint was that the corporation is a subordinate entity which is considered a gift from the people to help the general public. According to Howard Zinn, this all changed after the American Civil War, when the Fourteenth Amendment was passed to help insure the rights of former black slaves. Corporate lawyers saw this as an opportunity to increase their powers considerably, by claiming that a corporation is in fact a sort of person who is being deprived of their rights. Mary Zepernick of the Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy further states that between 1890 and 1910 there were 307 cases brought to the Supreme Court dealing with the 14th amendment. Out of the 307 only 19 cases were made by African Americans, while the other 288 came from corporate lawyers seeking "equal" rights for their corporate entities.
