The North Quincy High School football team will take a 2-1 record no matter how it comes.
A week after pulling off a 13-12 comeback victory over Sandwich at home, the Red Raiders won their second of three games this season in a 34- 2 victory at Randolph High School Thursday with an impressively varied attack and steady defense.
Senior quarterback Dennis Martin completed 4-of-6 passes for 79 yards, including two fourth-down completions to go with a fourth- down sneak to keep drives alive, and classmate John Cahill rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns to help North Quincy to its best start in over a decade.
"Whatever the score is, a win is a win and that's something that we're obviously very happy with having at North Quincy," Raiders coach Jim Connor said.
Yet there was a "but" for Connor, who said he likes "the way we're moving right now, but we have a lot of work to do. We were good, but we could have been better.
"We're the kind of team that can go anywhere right now; we can go in any direction."
For that reason, he said he can't quite feel settled in comfortably as what he considers a 2-1 team.
"It's hard to process, because I feel like we're not (2-1)," he said. "I feel like we have so much work to do that I don't feel like we're a 2-1 team yet. We can be a 2-1 team and I'm proud of the kids and they did a good job, but we gotta keep moving, we can't end our season now."
An 80-yard return of a blocked extra point gave the Blue Devils (0-3) their only points of the game, but they could have had at least six more.
At fourth-and-goal at the 2-yard line with 15 seconds left in the first half, junior Ricky Igbani charged left of the pack following a fake motion right. He appeared to make it into the end zone on a dive, but the Raiders held him out inches away to preserve what was a 13-2 lead at the time.
"It was a tough call, but it comes with the game," Randolph coach Vernon Crawford said. "I look at the course of the game and I see things that we have to get better on, like turning the ball over.
"We haven't seen our team play a whole game yet. I'm looking forward to seeing them play a whole four quarters of football."
And that's more or less what North Quincy was able to do.
Cahill led a group of effective Raider backs including seniors Danny Jackson (19-yard receiving touchdown to make it 7-0), Alex Tragellis (25- yard slant catch-and-run to help set up the team's second score), junior Joe Vialpondo (34-yard sweep left for a touchdown) and sophomore Brian Donaghey (3-yard touchdown). Cahill was intent on praising the offensive line, which helped Martin run a mostly patient attack.
"The line was awesome, the holes were huge," Cahill said, "but so was the defense; we would've had a shutout if it wasn't for that blocked kick."
Martin showed how he's improved in leading the offense in the Raiders' second series of the game. He completed a 25-yard pass to Tragellis on third-and-10, a 7-yard pass to Patrick Watkins on fourth-and-6 and a 28-yard pass to Watkins following a sack on fourth-and-18 to Randolph's 5-yard line.
"That builds his confidence and he was tremendous," Connor said. "This is the first game where I saw Dennis really have control of the huddle."
Now, Connor said, his job is to bring the team "back down to earth a little bit" heading into a home game versus Falmouth on Sept. 28.
"I'm very proud of the whole team," he said.
"These kids are good kids and good athletes, but they can do even more. They can really be something special."
