Bartók: Contrasts for Clarinet, Violin & Piano (Mvt III) - 419 sec
Yehudi Menuhin (violin) and Jeremy Menuhin with Thea King, clarinet. Bartók: Contrasts for Clarinet, Violin & Piano, Sz. 111 III. Fast Dance. Allegro vivace go here to see the first two movements: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2niZ2hDl14 Filmed at the ORTF, Paris, 03/12/72 by Eric Tishkoff: The final movement, Sebes (fast dance), is a frenzied dash, whose only detour is an off-balance, but still quick-moving section in the uncommon meter (8 + 5) / 8. The beginning of the final movement calls for the use of a violin with several of its strings tuned differently (scordatura). This yields a courser, rougher sound that suggests the playing of a folk musician. The clarinet part requires the use of both B-flat and A clarinets, which is done to more easily facilitate technical passages in different key signatures. While the first movement is scored for A clarinet, some players prefer to play it on B-flat clarinet. The transposition makes certain technical passages easier to play. However, there are several low Es in the movement, which the B-flat clarinet can't play, thus the transposition is somewhat problematic musically. Performance All three instrumental parts of Contrasts are extremely demanding from the standpoints of technique and ensemble. Compounding the unusual scales and intervals in many of the fast passages are complex rhythms within the individual parts, and almost constant rhythmic counterpoint, or cross-rhythms, between the parts. Thus, the most technically difficult passages also turn out to be the most treacherous in terms of playing together. A combination of individual preparation and rehearsal methods can be used to work out such sections. The most important method for solving or preventing ensemble issues is to know the other parts well. While most chamber music is such that the other parts can be easily learned while rehearsing, Contrasts is more problematic...

Bartók: Contrasts for Clarinet, Violin & Piano (Mvt I + II) - 596 sec
Yehudi Menuhin (violin) and Jeremy Menuhin with Thea King, clarinet. Bartók: Contrasts for Clarinet, Violin & Piano, Sz. 111 I. Recruiting Dance. Moderato, ben ritmato II. Relaxation. Lento go here to see the last movement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6Nhw1YQRrQ Filmed at the ORTF, Paris, 03/12/72 by Eric Tishkoff: What started in August 1938 as a casual conversation between József Szigeti and Benny Goodman very quickly turned into a significant chamber work by one of the world's leading composers, Béla Bartók (1881-1945). Szigeti, a pre-eminent violinist of the time, sent the request to Bartók-although, it was the world-renown jazz clarinetist Goodman who officially commissioned (i.e., paid for) the work. In his letter, Szigeti requested a duo for clarinet and violin with piano accompaniment, consisting of two contrasting movements, 6-7 minutes in duration, with cadenzas for both the clarinet and violin. Szigeti was probably expecting a short, flashy show-tune, in which case, he got much more than he bargained for. Janos Karpati writes (Bartok's Chamber Music, Stuyvesant, NY, Pendragon Press, 1976, p. 476) "Despite the commission, Bartók composed not what is known as a concert piece, but a chamber-music work, a worthy cousin of the string quartets and sonatas, which in both its material and structure follows the laws of chamber-music form." Contrasts is a three movement work nearly three times the duration of the original request. The music is an amalgam of abstracted Hungarian folk music combined with Rumanian dance melodies, Bulgarian and Greek meters, and a highly personalized, first-class command of 20th century compositional techniques. The second movement was omitted from the first performance. Apparently, Bartók was trying to adhere strictly to the original commission for two movements. However, internal evidence convincingly suggests that the middle movement was conceived along with the other two. Verbunkos, the first movement, is based on a dance, and characterized by a bouncy rhythmic figure (dotted eight-sixteenth) and passages that alternate between slow determination and medium agitation. The second movement, Piheno (relaxation), is purely atmospheric. Its lack of a strong pulse stands in contrast to the driving beats in both the outer movements.

Ersingen heavy / light rail contrasts. - 384 sec
This video shows dual-voltage light rail trams / streetcars sharing a mainline railway with main-line trains at Ersingen station. It was filmed in the early 1990's when the mainline faced a shortage of 'heavy' rail trains. The LRV's were used to replace some local trains on the route between Karlsruhe and the nearby town of Pforzheim. Their intended use was on a new service combining street tramway & pedestrian zone routes electrified at 750v dc and mainline routes electrified at 15,000c ac. However they were only able to work on that service once some new linking tracks had been constructed, and until this had been done they were 'spare'. This line is also used by heavy freight trains, international InterCity express trains and even steam trains, all of which are seen in this video. For safety all services using this line were fitted with Automatic Train Protection signalling. Also seen is a short ride inside one of the light rail vehicles.

East / West Berlin Contrasts, April 1990. (1) - 598 sec
Some primarily U-Bahn (underground railway / subway) related views filmed in Berlin in April 1990, which was after the wall had been opened but when the city was still divided. 1) Alexanderplatz was the focal point for the Eastern part of Berlin, and here we see some large & small profile U-Bahn trains (note the 'door closing' lights and bells) plus the main Centrum department store and a shop selling 'Western' products for people with 'hard' currency (ie: £, $, DM, etc). Not filmed (to avoid possible arrest) were signs inside Centrum in German, French, English and Russian saying that many of the goods on display could only be sold to people with Berlin Residency Cards (ie: people from the part of Berlin in the former DDR / GDR). There is also a ride inside a small profile U-Bahn train. 2) Wittenbergplatz was part of the focal point for the Western part of Berlin, and here we see a gift from London Transport, some small profile U-Bahn trains (note the lack of any type of 'door closing' alarms) plus some internal & external views of the restored station booking hall and the nearby large KaDeWe department store. 3) A ride through some closed stations inside a large profile U-Bahn train on line U8. After the building of the wall in 1961 the U8 only carried West Berliners, linking suburbs to the north and the south of the city via Alexanderplatz but with the stations in the Eastern controlled part of Berlin being sealed so that no-one could enter / leave them and armed guards on the station platforms to kill anyone who tried to board a passing train. At the time of filming one station (Rosenthaler Platz) had already been reopened, but the other 5 (on U8) remained closed, with the platforms dimly lit, and trains travelling through without stopping. 4) A photograph taken in December 1989 of a typical U-Bahn station in East Berlin which because the trains which served it ran through to West Berlin was closed.

East / West Berlin Contrasts, April 1990. (2) - 565 sec
Some primarily railway related views filmed in Berlin in April 1990, which was after the wall had been opened but when the city was still divided. The film includes the following:_ i)Several views of the Berlin wall, watch towers, etc as seen from S-Bahn trains. ii) Platform views taken at Gesundbrunnen, Friedrichstr. and Zoo stations. iii) The duty free 'Intershop' shops for West Berlin passengers changing between trains at Friedrichstr, which was wholly in East Berlin. iv) Several rides (S-Bahn and U-Bahn) on West Berlin trains through closed stations in the Eastern controlled part of Berlin. v) A DDR (former East Germany) map of the U & S Bahn in what the Eastern authorities called 'Westberlin'. By way of explanation of the important issues this film is subtitled. Video taken in April 1990, still images taken in December 1989.
