Christiania, also known as Freetown Christiania is a partially self-governing neighbourhood of about 850 residents, covering 34 hectares in the borough of Christianshavn in the Danish capital Copenhagen. Christiania has established semi-legal status as an independent community, but has been a source of controversy since its creation in a squatted military area in 1971. Its open cannabis trade was tolerated by authorities until 2004.
Meditation and yoga have always been popular among the Christianites, and for many years Christiania had their own internationally acclaimed theater group Solvognen, who, beyond their theater performances, also staged many happenings in Copenhagen and even throughout Sweden. Ludvigsen had always talked of the acceptance of drug-addicts who could no longer cope with regular society, and the spirit of that belief has still not diminished, even throughout many problems sprouted due to drug traffic and use (mostly of hard drugs, however, which are illegal in Christiania). These addicts enter and remain in Christiania and are considered just as integral to the Freetown ethic as the entrepreneurs. For this reason many Danes have seen Christiania as a successful social experiment.
However, for years the legal status of the region has been in a limbo due to different Danish governments attempting to remove the Christianites. Such attempts at removal have all been unsuccessful so far.
Famous for its main drag, known as Pusher Street, where hash and Skunk weed were sold openly from permanent stands until 2004, it nevertheless does have rules forbidding hard drugs, such as cocaine, speed, ecstasy and heroin. The commerce is controversial, but since the rules require a consensus they cannot be removed unless everybody agrees. The region negotiated an arrangement with the Danish defence ministry (which still owns the land) in 1995. Since 1994, residents have paid taxes and fees for water, electricity, trash disposal, etc. The future of the area remains in doubt, though, as Danish authorities continue to push for its removal. On Pusher Street, cameras are not allowed, and locals will wave their hands and shout "No photo!" if they see someone trying to take a picture. We have not filmed on this street out of respect for the rules.

The Paper War trailer is from a 50 min. film portraying everyday life in Christiania in a difficult time where the states try to privatize this community.
The state and the police put an unprecedented pressure on residents, visitors and businesses.
Publicly it is called normalization but internally it feels like police state methods.
This brings a question forward; does Denmark have to set of rules a so-called double-standard regarding law and order, freedom of speech, labor protection, human/children's right and the right to be and walk about. These and other issues is a part of everyday life in Christiania as showed in the films.

Papirkrigen er den sidste film i trilogien om Christiania 2005 - 2007.Christiania er i disse år udsat for et uhørt stort pres, dels fra politiet og dels fra statens bureaukratiske maskine, som tromler ned over beboerne, med krav om at Christianias skal splittes op i fem organisationer og med underliggende trusler om privatisering.
Igennem de tre år Jørn Balther har filmet på Christiania har mottoet været "Christiania i dag -- dig og mig i morgen", og flere af de ting vi oplever i filmen er i mellemtiden blevet introduceret i resten af landet. Blandt andet ransagning uden kendelse, zoneforbud og ikke mindst visitationer, der har karakter af sexchikane, hvor folk bliver befamlet på deres mest private dele. I det hele taget er tonen rå og uforsonlig, når politiet færdes i fristaden.
Filmen er således et systemkritisk portræt af dagens Danmark, som sætter fokus på retssikkerhed og demokrati, med udgangspunkt i Christianias hverdag.

Riot in Christiania. The police attacked Christiania and showed a significant lack of strategic track of the situation...
d 14.05.07 kl. ca. 8.00 ankom politiet til Christiania for at rive Cigarkassen ned.
Dette medførte uroligheder af lignende karakter, som er set flere gange i begyndelsen af 2007.
Finansministeren og Slots og Ejendomsstyrelsen beordrede denne aktion iværksat, på trods af at det var få dage før en domsafsigelse fra fogedretten, som handlede om ret og hævd.
Fem dage efter kom afgørelsen. Dommen faldt ud til Christianias fordel. Staten har anket dommen.
Det har den virkning at politiet og Slots og Ejendomsstyrelsen ikke umiddelbart kan bruge fogedretten i krigen mod Christiania.
Ellers var dagen en opvisning på dårlig ledelse og manglende overblik fra politiets side.
Aktionen blev ledet af Kommissær Bjarne Christensen fra Sektion B, Københavns politi.
Man så ham flere gange i løbet af dagen, mistede kontrol over sig selv og sine folk. Derigennem bragte han sit mandskab og befolkningen i fare.
Han kunne havde forhindret urolighederne ved at disponere anderledes, men foretrak at sende store styrker ind i områder, som ikke havde noget at gøre med nedrivningen. Dette fremprovokerede den ønskede virkning, måske lidt voldsommere end forudset og flere gange var det ved at gå alvorligt galt.
Desværre er ledelsen i Sektion B og i Københavns politi gennemsyret af rå brutalitet, som lægger grunden til en voldskultur i det danske politi.
Denne voldskultur er ved at brede sig til resten af landet, idet Sektion B bruges til at uddanne nye betjente, som derefter sendes ud i landet medførende en betinget refleks som de betegner som...
"ABSOLUT NUL TOLERANCE"
