For Chechen civilians, Russia's 'clean-up' operations amounts to little more than genocide. Even Russian soldiers condemn their actions in Chechnya.
When Ivan volunteered to fight in the second Chechen war, he had scant understanding of what he would experience. Even now, he remains deeply troubled by his time there. Lack of supplies and widespread alcoholism fuelled acts of brutality. His ill equipped unit had little choice but to rob civilians. "We had to feed ourselves. Of course we turned to looting. Of course we'd kill," he says. He believes the Chechens are being forced into acts of terrorism out of desperation and revenge. "We'd come in the house and kill five people -- one survives, they have nothing to live for and it becomes blood for blood." 60 year old Sowdat has seen two of her children killed by the Russians. Another two have disappeared without a trace. "It's genocide and it's conducted openly," states Rusen Badalov, of the Chechen Salvation Committee. Despite Putin's assurance to the contrary, Chechens believe that a bloody war is being waged against them. Daily 'disappearances' in every village tell the same story. It seems that Russia's campaign to impose order is creating the terrorism they mean to crush.

Following the destruction of Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, we look to the victims of a war few Russians wanted. For the first time Russian reporting on a Russian war has eluded government censorship, although the country's only independent TV station may lose its licence for reporting too freely. Russian mothers flock to Chechnya in search of their soldier sons - there are scenes of emotional reunions as well as a mother agonising at home. Two former Grozny inhabitants sadly contemplate their ruined home. Chechens' disillusionment with both Dudayev and Moscow is echoed in an interview with the Chechen Provisional Council. Many Chechens are appalled by Moscow's strong-arm tactics. Some vow never to concede to the Kremlin - itself shaken by international criticism of the war. Imposing rule on shattered Grozny is a daunting task.

Wearing a T-shirt blazon with the words 'anti-terror' and cradling a grenade launcher, Shamily Basayev speaks of his remorse for Beslan. "I didn't expect such cruelty ... I never thought they'd do it." But he's not talking about what his men did. He's blaming the Russians for storming the school. In his eleven year career, Basayev has become notorious for acts of extreme violence. Ten years ago, 130 died after he seized a hospital in South Russia. Then came the Moscow theatre siege. But in targeting children, he went too far. Global revulsion allowed Putin to discredit the Chechen's fight for independence. However despite the backlash, Basayev claims he'd do it all again. "You must understand us correctly. We are at war."

The First Chechen War also known as the War in Chechnya was fought between Russia and Chechnya from 1994 to 1996 and resulted in Chechnya's de facto independence from Russia as the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.
After the initial campaign of 1994--1995, culminating in the devastating Battle of Grozny, Russian federal forces attempted to control the mountainous area of Chechnya but were set back by Chechen guerrilla warfare and raids on the flatlands in spite of Russia's overwhelming manpower, weaponry, and air support. The resulting widespread demoralization of federal forces, and the almost universal opposition of the Russian public to the brutal conflict, led Boris Yeltsin's government to declare a ceasefire in 1996 and sign a peace treaty a year later.
The official figure for Russian military losses is 5,500, while most estimates put the number between 3,500 and 7,500, one as high as 14,000.[5] Although there are no accurate figures for the number of Chechen militants killed, the official Russian estimate puts the number at about 15,000. Chechen separatists claim no more than 3,000. Various figures estimate the number of civilian deaths between 50,000 - 100,000, and over 200,000 injured. More than 500,000 persons were displaced by the conflict,[6] as cities and villages across the republic were left in ruins.

The Second Chechen War, in a later phase better known as the War in the North Caucasus,[7] was launched by the Russian Federation starting August 26, 1999, in which Russian federal forces largely recaptured the separatist region of Chechnya.
The Second Chechen War was started in response to the Invasion of Dagestan by the IIPB, and the Russian apartment bombings which Russia blamed on Chechen separatists, although no evidence linking Chechens with the bombings has been released to the public. The campaign largely reversed the outcome of the First Chechen War, in which the region gained de facto independence as the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. Although it is regarded by many as an internal conflict within the Russian Federation, the war attracted a large number of Jihadist foreign fighters.
