Summer Allergies - Nothing to Sneeze At! - 122 sec
The dog days of summer are here and for many the heat and humidity mean one thing, allergies. With an estimated 40 percent of children and 20 percent of adults suffering from allergies, rates are on the rise. Americans are spending three billion dollars a year on antihistamines, often without knowing which allergies are actually causing their symptoms. Doctors say in-vitro blood tests, the latest generation of allergy tests, can help take the guess work out of diagnosis and treatment. Unlike the skin prick tests of the past, which can take an hour and a half to perform and require up to 150 injections, in-vitro tests, require just one blood sample. Systems like the IMMULITE(r)2000 are then able to test the sample for up to 440 specific allergens and allergy panels. Doctors say this testing method is not only more convenient, efficient and accurate but more comfortable for the patient as well. The tests can be performed in patients over the age of three months. Produced for Siemens

Xlear Nasal Wash- Made with Xylitol - 28 sec
For years, using a warm saline solution to rinse out nasal passages has been one way to reduce the symptoms of upper respiratory infections. But research has shown that this home remedy only helps relieve dryness and mild irritations. It does not eliminate infection-causing bacteria or environmental irritants. Yet more than 90 percent of all infection-causing bacteria and the irritants that trigger allergies and asthma enter through the nose. Because the nose is the "nest" where it all begins, it makes sense to regularly clean and hydrate to eliminate bacteria and irritants that can cause ear and sinus infections, allergies, asthma, and more. While many antihistamines or decongestants give temporary relief from stuffy noses and other symptoms of infection, they can be habit-forming. While they do provide some temporary relief, they do it by blocking histamines which, ironically, are the body's natural cleansing system inside the nose. In addition, antihistamines and decongestants make most people drowsy when they take them. Xlear Nasal Wash combines a powerful saline rinse with natural xylitol to help wash, hydrate, and moisturize nasal passages. Xylitol helps flush infection-causing bacteria and environmental irritants from the nose to eliminate infections and alleviate symptoms associated with allergies and asthma. Xylitol also helps stimulate our natural nasal cleansing system for better defenses against infections and irritants. A natural sugar, xylitol comes mainly from corn cobs, corn stalks, and birch trees. But it contains just five carbon atoms per molecule. The molecular difference between xylitol and sugar may be small, but the antibacterial properties of xylitol because of this difference are huge.

Cough syrup dangers - 169 sec
Health Canada is expected to issue an advisory warning people not to give over-the-counter cold and cough medications to children under two and adjust labels to reflect the concerns, CBC News has learned. - The warning, which will come within days, follows an American study that says the medications have a questionable benefit and, in some cases, could be dangerous. - Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration completed an internal review of serious and life-threatening effects and deaths in young children dating back to 1969. - It found 54 deaths related to decongestants and another 69 related to the use of antihistamines. In many cases, the child was given the wrong amount of medication. Thousands more wound up requiring medical attention. - "All medications have risks ... and that's no less true of cough and cold medications than any other category," said Gerry Harrington, a spokesperson for the Nonprescription Drug Manufacturers Association of Canada. - A physician with the Canadian Paediatric Society's drug therapy committee says there is growing concern about the potential dangers the drugs pose. - "Because of what they are used for, the symptomatic relief of common cold, any risk is unacceptable. So risk of death would be unacceptable in babies," said Dr. Michael Reider. - "Let's send a clear message: it won't make them feel better and there may be some risk. Don't use it." - U.S. drug regulators are reviewing the safety of cough and cold remedies. In a written statement, Health Canada said it's aware of the American review and is conducting its own assessment of the safety of these products. - Canada's non-prescription drug industry has confirmed it will change its labelling to warn against use in children under the age of two, but says it wants more study into the issue. - Reider said he'd like to see other changes to advertising imagery. - "So that the manufacturers do not show pictures of little babies, because it gives the impression they are safe and effective," said Reider. - Earlier this year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised parents against giving over-the-counter cough or cold medicines to children under two years old. - The American Academy of Pediatrics first advised parents in 1997 about the risks of complications and overdose potential with certain cough suppressants.

The Next Generation Allergy Test -- Nothing to Sneeze At! - 132 sec
If you've been experiencing watery eyes and excessive sneezing, you're not alone. Allergy rates are on the rise in the U.S., with an estimated 50 million Americans suffering. One side effect -- Americans are buying antihistamines to the tune of 3 billion dollars a year, often times without knowing which allergies are actually causing their symptoms. Doctors say in-vitro blood tests, the latest generation of allergy tests, can help take out the guess work out of diagnosing and treating allergies. Unlike the skin prick tests of the past, which can take an hour and a half to perform and require up to 150 injections, in-vitro tests, like the 3G allergy tests, require just one blood sample. Systems like the IMMULITE®2000 from Siemens are then able to test that sample for up to 420 specific allergens and allergy panels. Doctors say this testing method is more convenient, efficient and accurate, not to mention more comfortable for the patient. The tests can be performed in patients over the age of 3 months. Insidermedicine in 60 - October 1, 2007 - 90 sec
From New Jersey - The Topps Meat Company recall of potentially E. coli-infected meat has widened. In what is now being called one of the largest beef recalls in US history, the company is recalling over 21 million pounds of meat. Numerous cases of E. coli infection have occured across the US after eating beef patties made by the company. The effects of E. coli can range from bloody diarrhea to death in some. From Maryland - Safety experts are recommending that the FDA ban the use of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for those under the age of 6 years. Over a 30 year period, more that 100 deaths were associated with the use of either decongestants or antihistamines. From Barcelona - A long-term study of over 70,000 women has shown moderate alcohol ingestion raises the risk of breast cancer. Women who drank on average between 1 and 2 glasses per day had a 10% higher risk for breast cancer, when compared to those who had less than 1 drink per day. The risk rose by 30% in those those who drank 3 or more glasses per day. The risk was the same for those who drank red wine, white wine, or beer. Because 1 in 8 women get breast cancer, the real risk may increase to 1 in 6 in those who drink more than 3 glasses of alcohol per day. And finally, from Baltimore - Children who have TV in their rooms are more likely to be less emotionally reactive. A study of over 2700 children showed that 5 year olds who had a TV in their rooms were more likely to have behavioral and sleep problems and be less emotionally responsive. Over 40% of those in kindergarten had a TV in their room. For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.

Florida Fire Ants - 154 sec
These nasty little buggers will leave a painful wound! Not only that - the wound will become scare tissue in many cases . . . BEWARE! For more of our videos, please visit us at: http://www.stevehasballs.com Although most fire ant species do not bother people and are not invasive due to biological factors, Solenopsis invicta, commonly known as the Red imported fire ant (or RIFA) is an invasive pest in many areas of the world, notably the United States, Australia, the Philippines, China and Taiwan. The RIFA was accidentally introduced into the United States via Brazilian cargo entering the port of Mobile, Alabama, in the 1930s but now infests the majority of the Southern and Southwestern United States. In the US, the FDA estimates that more than US$5 billion is spent annually on medical treatment, damage, and control in RIFA-infested areas. Furthermore, the ants cause approximately US$750 million in damage annually to agricultural assets, including veterinarian bills and livestock loss as well as crop loss.[1] Since September 2004, Taiwan has been seriously affected by the red fire ant. The US, Taiwan and Australia all have ongoing national efforts to control or eradicate the species, but, other than Australia, none have been especially effective. In Australia an intensive program costing A$175 million has, at February 2007, eradicated 99% of fire ants from South East Queensland. he venom of a fire ant sting causes stinging and swells into a bump. This can cause much pain and irritation at times, especially when stung repeatedly by several at once. The bump often forms into a white pustule, which is at risk of becoming infected. The pustules are unattractive and uncomfortable while active and, if the bite sites become infected, can turn into scars. Additionally, some people are allergic to the venom and, as with many allergies, may experience anaphylaxis, which requires emergency treatment.[2] An antihistamine or topical corticosteroids may help reduce the itching. First aid for fire ant bites includes external treatments and oral medicines. * External treatments: a topical steroid cream (hydrocortisone), alcohol, bleach, a whipped mixture of egg whites and salt (spread over the affected skin for 30 minutes, removes the pain). * Oral medicines: antihistamines For patients who experience severe or life threatening allergic reactions to fire ant insect stings, visit a doctor or hospital immediately as these reactions can result in death.
