This video is from my trip to Syria during 2005. Lots of scenes from Damascus, particularly from the old quarter near the Ummayad mosque. I rented a car and did a large circular route around the country stopping in Hama, Allepo, Raqaa, Palmyra and An Tanf. My car broke down in the desert along the Iraqi border and it ended up being a huge headache. Syria was a very nice country to visit and was surpisingly open and easy to travel in.

African Pygmy Hedgehog "Aragorn" (registered name: Yökankaan Aragorn) and Chinese Crested Dog "Bella" (registered name: Caa-Allepo Silver Star).
For everyones information. Bella is not wearing a diaper because she isn't house broken, she's wearing pants because making this film she was in heat and I didn't want all the blood to mess up my home.
I also referred her as a "shepherd" because she likes the "herd" Aragorn. She is a Chinese Crested - not a German Shepherd.

Patara Kakhi, King Erekle II, had an ashug named Sayatnova.
Sayatnova gained particular popularity among the ashugs and profoundly influenced the creative work of his contemporaries and the generations of Ashugs to come. He also contributed to Georgian literature and is considered to be the founder of the mukhambazi verse in Georgian poetry.
There used to be a great many ashugs in the 18th century Georgia but, according to the words of the Russian writer, Valeri Briusov, "Anything accomplished by Sayatnova's predecessors pales under Sayatnova's halo."
The legend has it that when Sayatnova started to recite his poems, nightingales would stop to listen him and delight in his songs.
The word ashug is of Arabic origin (ashiq) and means an amorous person or a poet glorifying love. Sayatnova was a poet celebrating love but at the same time he was the warrior of King Erekle's advance-guard and wherever the fate of Georgia was at stake, he was with the army playing his saza and encouraged the Georgian warriors in the most difficult moments, instilling in them the hope for victory.
We know very little about Sayatnova's life. Even the dates of his birth and death are not known for sure. It is through his poems and postscripts to his poems that we are able to find out about some details of his biography. Neither is his last name known since, according to the ashug tradition, Sayatnova is the poet's chosen pseudonym. Arutin was his Christian name.

Sayatnova lived in Tbilisi. "Tbilisi, the land of Kartli, is my homeland. My mother is from Avlabar and my father - from Allepo," he relates in one of his Azeri poems. In another poem he says he is the son of Mighdis. This name was given to people who had been to Jerusalem and had prayed on the grave of the Lord.
The duduk is one of the oldest double reed instruments in the world. Variants of the duduk can be found in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Persia, Turkey and even as far away as the Balkans. Besides being called variations of the word "duduk", such as "duduki" (in Georgia), "mey" in Turkey, "balaban" (in Azerbaijan and in parts of Central Asia), "tüdük" in Turkmenistan (although different instrument, similar to "tutek" in Azerbaijan.
Balkan Duduk
While the term duduk mostly refers to a double reed instrument, it sometimes also refers to a kind of blocked-end flute, which in some part of Macedonia is also called kaval or kavalce. Made of maple or other wood, it comes in two sizes: 700-780mm and 240-400mm (duduce). The blocked end is flat. Playing the duduk is fairly straightforward and easy, thus it is widely used throughout Macedonia. Its sound is clean and pleasant. Plays two octaves, with diatonic and chromatic tones. When played, it is held vertically in front of the body. These instruments are made by Stojanče Kostovski.
