| Skateboard Sailing - Chicago - 1976 - Sorting It Out WMAQ-TV - 289 sec During November 1976, I was featured on the second to last episode of WMAQ-TV 'Magazine Show' Sorting It Out hosted by Bob Smith & Shelley Long on NBC 5 Chicago. During the first vignette Bob Smith reads the letter I wrote to him at the station while they broadcast the film of me sailing my skateboard up and down the bike path at Montrose Harbor. I recorded the show off the air using my father's Sony Betamax VCR. Doing the filming and working with the cameraman and crew was a great experience and sparked and sparked a lifelong interest interest in media. | Jerry Springer First WMAQ Commentary - 240 sec Leading up to the ratings sweeps period in May 1997, WMAQ (NBC channel 5 Chicago) hired Jerry Springer to do commentaries on their 10:00p news. This ultimately resulted in the two 10:00p news anchors (Ron Magers and Carol Marin) resigning in protest, a huge public backlash, and plummeting ratings. Springer's tenure at the station lasted all of two nights before he too resigned, leaving a huge mess in his wake. This is the first commentary he delivered, from May 5th. | WMAQ multi-synch - 87 sec WMAQ multi-synch with different packages. Thought my selections on this one would be interesting - I chose Newswire for obvious reasons, the rest I thought worked pretty nicely and just wanted to try that great Kalehoff classic, Industrial Strength at the end! Alive V.2 was popular on the WHO synch, so I decided to use it on this one as well (different cut of course). Here are the packages on this synch in the order that they appear:
1. Newswire (615 Music)
2. Battery (615 Music)
3. NBC News Now (Gari Comm)
4. Alive V.2 NBC (615 Music)
5. Industrial Strength (Edd Kalehoff) Auteur : jdsynchs Tags: WMAQ-TV WMAQ Newswire Battery NBC News Now Alive V.2 Industrial Strength |
| WMAQ Channel 5 - "Memory" (1984) - 166 sec Here's a video montage (missing beginning part) that WMAQ Channel 5 used as part of their sign-off apparently for a few years. It features the song "Memory" from the musical "Cats", and showcases Chicagoland senior citizens and various aspects in their lives. Kind of a strange thing to show during sign-off. I mean, for what purpose was this made? Other than to make you realize that your life is going by as you watch TV at 3 in the morning before the station signs-off? ;-)
Is that Barbra Streisand singing? I wasn't sure if she did this song - I know she did the more famous "Memories".
The copyright for this says 1984, but this airing is probably from after that because you can see the newer-style logo at the very end when Jim Hill announces the end of the broadcast day, before the tape cuts off. If I'm not mistaken this logo first appeared in January 1986.

| WMAQ Channel 5 - Movie 5 - "The Ape Man" (1988?) - 297 sec Here is the opening of a late movie feature of "The Ape Man" on WMAQ Channel 5. It starts out with some kind of time-filler - a Channel 5 logo over some rock music which goes on for over a minute, and then the opening to the "Movie 5" begins - I've seen this opening before used in New York so I think it was a national thing.
Then, strangely, between the Movie 5 opening and the start of the film, they show the following PSA's:
U.S. Postal Service featuring Ann Robinson - Consumer Advocate (Reminds me of a joke - "I once knew a lady who got attacked by a guard dog.." "Oh, Doberman Pincher?" "No, he bit her!" ;-)
State of Illiinois - Department of Children and Family Services - Be a Foster Parent - "One Free Kid"
Easter Seals
Peace Corps - The Toughest Job You'll Ever Love
Not sure when this aired exactly but based on the Channel 5 logo and USPS Copyright date I'd say 1988 is a good bet.
