Sudan: The Silent Genocide documents the destruction of life in the Darfur region of Sudan as well as the lack of a notable response by the American public. The film, instead of entrenching itself in the atrocities currently underway in Darfur, decides to focuses on what the average American can do to help stop the genocide. Through photographs and interviews, the documentary encourages the audience not to make their silence a part of U.S. History.

The rebel SPLA movement has been fractured by a split in its leadership encouraged by Khartoum and has now disintegrated along tribal lines.
The Nuer and Dinka tribes - at peace with each other for many years - are now at war. We go into the marshes of southern Sudan - home of the Dinka - to witness the trail of death caused by the new fighting. On the edge of the marshland a vulture picks at a human corpse. The more fortunate subsist on a barely edible paste made from water lily seeds. Includes interviews with SPLA leader Colonel John Gurang and Commander Riak Machar, leader of the breakaway rebels.

We look at Sudan, one of the most notorious slave states. Here slavery is widely used as a weapon of war by the Muslim north against the Christian and animist south.
In the ruins of a burnt-out village, lie the heaped, rotting bodies of slaves who tried to escape the northern raiders who stalk the southern Sudan. Slaving here has killed thousands of people; the survivors have horrific tales to tell. Matihiane and her children were captured a year ago. They were marched for 10 days, given food mixed with sand and urine, beaten if they slowed and sent to work. On arriving with her new master, he forcibly circumcised her. Such inhumanity has led many to come to the aid of the southern Sudanese. Baroness Cox, is the most controversial. Sitting with the slavers in the shade of a tree, she exchanges greetings and begins to barter for the human booty. Today, $325,000 changes hands for the freedom of 325 slaves. While her solution offers immediate salvation for the few, it could also be responsible for the rising number of slave raids. The UN and other humanitarian agencies will not work with her. She though is adamant; "It would go on whether we were here or not...it isn't going to change the war." Even for the slaves she frees though, liberty comes with no guarantees. The only thing that can buy their peace of mind is an end to the war.

The Nuba rebels of central Sudan have lost their revered leader of 15 years and now face famine. Yousif Kuwa, who died in March, led the Nuba fight for survival, gave them a sense of identity and a pride in their African roots. He built up a strong civil administration and enforced a rule of law that did not differentiate between soldier and civilian. "He was a teacher, a leader, respected and not feared at all". But in Kuwa's later years, the Nuba rebels suffered a series of crushing military defeats at the hands of the fundamentalist generals who rule Sudan. In mid June this year the Khartoum government closed all access to the mountains, depriving 85,000 Nuba, facing famine this year, any chance of receiving food aid. Kuwa's successor, Commander Abdel Aziz Adam el-Helo, must now reverse the tide of war and find a way of feeding his people if the Nuba rebellion is to survive Kuwa's death.

Darfur may dominate the headlines but in Southern Sudan, the story is more positive. After a 21 year civil war, peace seems to be returning to the region and refugees are coming home.
The peace deal agreed between the SPLA and government gives the South greater autonomy. Now, millions of displaced people are returning. "They're our people. They have a right to be here," reasons Vice President of Southern Sudan, Dr Machar. But tensions between the North and South still abound. According to the agreement, the South was supposed to receive 50% of all oil revenues. But some claim this is not happening. "We have received very little revenue", states Machar. Militias, allegedly armed by the government, are still creating terror in the South. Despite this, people like Martha are optimistic. "I'm very happy because I've come home."
