Poor Whites - South Africa - 933 sec
June 2006 Since the end of apartheid, thousands of white South Africans have been forced into poverty. They blame the government's positive discrimination policies, which favour black employees. Twelve years ago, Afrikaners like Betsie Dreyer lived a privileged and cocooned life. Now, many are dependent on charity handouts. "We are fighting all the time to survive." The government is determined to see the workforce appropriately reflect the population. It gives black people priority in employment, sets 'black quotas' for businesses and favours companies owned by black people. But critics accuse the government of neglecting its responsibility to white citizens. As union rep Kallie Kriel states: "It's ironic that a government that fought racial laws is now doing exactly the same thing."

White Negros - South Africa - 471 sec
March 2006 Even today, albinos in South Africa face widespread prejudice and discrimination. Rejected by both the black and white communities, they struggle to find their place in society. "Some women spit when they see me. They think albinism is contagious and that will stop them catching it", confides albino Ntswaki. Both her parents are black but because of her white skin her father rejected her at birth. "I feel I am in strange place -- not white enough, not black enough."

Vigilante Justice - South Africa - 1454 sec
May 1999 In this report South Africa's growing vigilante crisis is thrown into sharp relief when the rape of a black girl is publicly avenged Some of her attackers live in her street and she now fears for her life. Frustrated that the police will do little to help she approaches the local taxi firm to help her get revenge. "Will you be satisfied and stop crying once we've beaten them?" the firm ask her. At 4am the girl points out her township tormentors to willing vigilantes. They strip the culprits naked, strap them to a lamp post and lash them. The girl herself gives the first stroke. The legacy of apartheid leads South Africans to such violence, when even the police disregarded their own laws. The mob ruled when it black against white. This past has depersonalised and dehumanised. The police stand accused of apathy but often they are frustrated by clever criminals. But unless the police earn people's trust, vigilantism may become the norm.

Child Prostitution - South Africa - 1402 sec
Dec 1998 Child prostitution is rife in South Africa. It's a means of survival for impoverished township kids. Standing at the side of the road two young girls pass time playing like children, until their pimp tells them to shut-up. Their friend 14 year-old Lindy, lifts her top to let a potential client inspect her wares. "They like to suck them because I'm young" she says. Following a girl on a job we confront her white client. His flies undone, he denies he knew how old she was and demands his money back. A passer-by comes to help him out. "He was just following a call of nature," he says. Nobody knows how many children are working the streets. They stay here because of poverty, because there is no home to go back to and prostitution is all they can do to survive. Local police have given-up chasing the clients; "If you catch these people they won't give evidence [against clients] because tomorrow they will be back on the street." Instead social workers try to take the children into homes. The numbers they can help though is small, and most turn back to prostitution.

Sa Kambas ng Lipunan - On the Canvas of Society - 1184 sec
On the Canvas of Society While you watch this video, allow me to share with you some words as a backdrop or background of this video. What follows is an excerpt from Joey Velasco's speech at the start of his Book Launching and First Solo Exhibit in Art Asia. His book is entitled "They Have Jesus: The Stories of the Children of Hapag" and was launched on Oct. 13, 2006. -excerpt starts- Jesus Christ never wrote a book. The only scene in the Gospel where we saw him write was on the sand. But what he wrote was blown by the wind. What was etched in our minds forever in history and in eternity was his preference for the outcasts and rejects. In the future, I will be like the sand that will be blown by the wind. I will remain an unknown artist and writer. I will soon be forgotten. May the things I wrote in which I commit myself, be etched forever. Countless books have been written in the past about the triumph of the human spirit and about great men who were larger than life. This simple book purports to share the stories of a handful of small lives whose voices are often unheard and whose tiny dreams are shattered before they can even take form. I just allowed them to speak for themselves even amidst the environment of cynicism. Their story does not seem much because it is so simple, but it is definitely deep because it speaks of and mirrors the ills of society. I have learned from them that immersion or "sawsaw suka" is not enough, just for the feel-good-effect. Presence is the name of the game. Presence is what we are called for. I do not aim to do a Mother Theresa here or to fire up a grand vision like that of the great Tony Meloto whose environmental and social reengineering of Gawad Kalinga is becoming global. I am aware that I am surely not a powerful force to advocate change that will prevent hunger and raise funds. I am not a wealthy person. I am just a painter. I cannot be a front liner of any movement. But I know I can make a difference. This is my personal healing and transformative journey through the children's pain, hope, faith, and liberation that can reach across generations and cultures. I wrote this book not out of conceit or in order to highlight the rare privilege of having painted with and from the heart. I am not sharing my strength as an artist or as a writer, but my weakness as a fellow journeyer, who witnessed these children drifting in the dark. Initially, I thought they were lost only to find out in the end that I was the one who was actually lost. It is not a testimony of how I pitied poor children. It is an acknowledgement of God's abounding compassion for me. I am writing this to share how the Lord Himself painted through me and continues to give His message of hope and unconditional love through my humble work. In doing this, I wish to commit myself more and to live up to what is yet to unfold in the pages of this book. -end of excerpt- This video contains just snippets of the book "They Have Jesus" based on his obra "Hapag ng Pag-asa" (Table of Hope). For more on "Hapag ng Pag-asa" and the kids in the painting, view the videos at these links: Bayani Summit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNLUnHbsL_Y Noche Buena with Hapag Kids http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fqrlN0yR4Y This video reminds me of the song, "Get Up and Live" which goes like this: Get up and live, stand up and walk Life is a gift from God You've only got one life, live it well Go to your brothers, help them all. Get up and live! Go to the poor, to the poor in your town Go to the poor, to the poor, my friend. Share their sorrows, let your pride down. Show them you care, try to understand. Get up and live ... Stand up and walk!

Operation Priscilla - South Africa - 1162 sec
January 2005 Police in South Africa have infiltrated a major child sex syndicate. Girls as young as ten were fed drugs to force them into a life of prostitution. Priscilla is only 16 but already she's a hardened prostitute. "I don't know if I'll see 21 if it goes on like this," she confides. She's a victim of a nation-wide Nigerian sex syndicate, which rotates girls between brothels in four cities. Her 14 year old sister, Candice, is also being held captive. "Child exploitation attracts a lot of attention -- it becomes more dangerous, it becomes more lucrative," explains one expert. There's even a website where pimps can advertise their girls. Most girls were enslaved after being force-fed drugs but more sinister methods were also used. One mother's three year old son was abducted by her pimps to force her onto the street. Another child was brutally gang raped after she tried to run away.

Handog Ng Pilipino Sa Mundo - 268 sec
This is the definitive video that captured the mood of EDSA1 or the People Power Revolution of 1986. When this was shown on TV a few months after the revolution, people were quite touched. However, it's stint on TV abruptly ended after award winning director Mike De Leon pulled it out because Manoling Morato of the MTRCB had decided to censor the part where the pictures of the dictator and his wife were being slapped by the people. A lot of EDSA veterans saw the censoring as a sign that the new dispensation was 'watering down' its commitment to the ideals that people fought for and was already succumbing to the call of 'reconciliation' by the Marcos loyalists. We may all have our disappointments regarding EDSA. Nevertheless, here is the video which to me captures the purity and the idealism of the time , at least before the politicians started to fail us. Notice that Mike De Leon situated the EDSA1 revolution to the overall struggle of our independence which began before the American occupation.
