Ancient Lives by John Romer - The Valley of the Kings 1/3 - 646 sec
This is Episode Two, part one, of the 8 episode series. 2. The Valley of the Kings The tombs of Ipi the workman and Kha the architect illustrate the daily rituals of life, as well as the nature of tools, furniture, clothes, kitchen utensils, and foods. As we explore the tomb of Tutmose III, Romer explains what its paintings and hieroglyphs mean. ----- from the official description of episode two In "Ancient Lives" John Romer traces the history of what is now called Dier-el-Medina, the village of the craftsmen and builders of the Royal tombs of the Pharaohs. The scribes of the village kept extensive records of the work, legal disputes, events, even poetry--enabling historians to understand their lives 3,000 years ago in the sort of intimate detail Romer is so good at explaining with such fun, interest and lyrical affection. marketing blurb of series: The history of a single Egyptian village, from the time of the great Ramses through the decline of pharaonic power some 500 years later, is traced in this fascinating series. In this village the tombs in the Valley of the Kings were built, and John Romer, our enthusiastic host, shares the excitement of making its inhabitants come alive: from Paneb the unruly foreman to Djutmose the dutiful scribe; from descriptions of what the villagers dreamed about to the first sit-down strike in recorded history.

Ancient Lives by John Romer - Village decays - part 1 of 5 - 642 sec
In "Ancient Lives" John Romer traces the history of what is now called Dier-el-Medina, the village of the craftsmen and builders of the Royal tombs of the Pharaohs. The scribes of the village kept extensive records of the work, legal disputes, events, even poetry--enabling historians to understand their lives 3,000 years ago in the sort of intimate detail Romer is so good at explaining with such fun, interest and lyrical affection. This episode is the forth and final as originally aired on TV in the US, in 1984. It is available on VHS tape at many libraries. These tapes split each of the four episodes into two. The episode I uploaded here as described in those library tapes: 7. The Year of the Hyena The Year of the Hyena has passed, the famine is over. The date is October 5, 1079 B.C. by our calendar, a time of disillusionment, decay, and change, as the entire village moves to the temple compound at Medinet Habu. We meet Djutmose the scribe; Herihor, a general sent by the King to take control of the Year of the Hyena; and Butamen, son of Djutmose, who investigates plundered tombs. 8. The Deserted Village As desert sands slowly begin to cover the deserted village, we suddenly realize how fragile our link with these ancient lives has been. In the final program, Romer discusses how the valley today offers clues to those who care to read them.

Ancient Lives by John Romer - Village decays - part 3 of 5 - 633 sec
John Romer (born 1941) published a fine book based on this series called "Ancient Lives; Daily Life in Egypt of the Pharaohs" blurb for the book: "John Romer uses hundreds of surviving texts to describe the life and times of one group of people in Egypt. The book centres around the people of a tiny New Kingdom village, which was the home of artisans and construction workers who created the marvellous tombs in the Valley of the Kings."

Ancient Lives by John Romer - Village decays - part 4 of 5 - 628 sec
John Corry wrote of this series in the New York Times: John Romer, the host of the series, says we know more about the people who lived in the settlement 3,000 years ago than we do ''about most people in the last century.'' The ancient Egyptians were inveterate scribblers, recording their lives on stone. Thus Mr. Romer, an Egyptologist, takes us on a tour of the village: Here lived a little old lady who adored a pet monkey; there lived a scribe who wrote love poetry. Mr. Romer scambles up hillsides and over fallen statuary. Sometimes he grows breathless and sometimes his British accent gets in the way. On the whole, however, he is not a bad guide. Nonetheless, the great appeal here is not the lesson in Egyptology, but the lesson in design. Have the graphic arts improved all that much in 3,000 years? "Ancient Lives" indicates they have not. The people in the settlement decorated their own modest tombs with striking pictures, carefully rendered. Even everyday artifacts were made with care. Form, function and esthetic appeal seem to have been given equal weight. Mr. Romer is enthusiastic about all this - ''the finest linen woven anywhere, anyplace, anytime'' - and he notes that much of what the ancient Egyptians made couldn't be duplicated today. Climbing over a huge statue of Ramses II, he notes that it had to have been made by gifted craftsmen who shared a sense of purpose. No such community, he says, exists today.
