Amoco Renegades playing the Baron song Somebody, arranged by Jit Samaroo, at Panorama 1989 semifinals. Phase II Pan Groove was going for a hat trick, having won in 1987 and 1988. But Renegades were the spoiler, easily winning on finals night with this innovative tune which showcased the virtuosity not just of the band's panists but of its skilled rhythm section as well. Where for years a steelband's percussion served just to keep time, this song especially ushered in a new way of thinking of the rhythm section as being more dynamic by having it play calypso, soca, zouk, latin, samba, and funk, with the rest of the band following along in each respective style. It may have not been the first to incorporate rhythm other than calypso (Trinidad All Stars' Curry Tabanca with its brilliant use of tassa comes to mind) but it did it with such variety and orchestration that it showed that a rhythm section could add a whole new layer of musical complexity to an arrangement. Ever since then, such orchestrated rhythm changes have become standard in panorama.

Jit shows his interpretive skills as he caps off the intro with a big earthquake, similar to what he did with the buzzing bees in Bee's Melody and the river debris in Mystery Band. The protective hard hats are a nice touch. I really like the drops at the top of the verse variation.
