| The Real Railgun (Big Gun) Inspired in Fiction Quake Game! - 64 sec
The U.S. Navy yesterday(Jan 31) test fired an incredibly powerful new big gun designed to replace conventional weaponry aboard ships. Sci-fi fans will recognize its awesome power and futuristic technology.
The big gun uses electromagnetic energy instead of explosive chemical propellants to fire a projectile farther and faster. The railgun, as it is called, will ultimately fire a projectile more than 230 miles (370 kilometers) with a muzzle velocity seven times the speed of sound (Mach 7) and a velocity of Mach 5 at impact.
The test-firing, captured on video, took place Jan. 31 in Dahlgren, Va., and Navy officials called it the "world's most powerful electromagnetic railgun."
The Navy's current MK 45 five-inch gun, by contrast, has a range of less than 23 miles (37 kilometers).
The railgun has been a featured weapon in many science fiction universes, such as the new "Battlestar Galactica" series. It has also achieved newfound popularity among the 20-something-and-under generation for its devastating ability to instantaneously shoot a "slug" through walls and through multiple enemies in video games such as the "Quake" series of first person shooters.
The Navy's motivation? Simple destruction.
The railgun's high-velocity projectile will destroy targets with sheer kinetic energy rather than with conventional explosives.
"I never ever want to see a Sailor or Marine in a fair fight. I always want them to have the advantage," said Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Gary Roughead. "We should never lose sight of always looking for the next big thing, always looking to make our capability better, more effective than what anyone else can put on the battlefield."
The railgun's lack of explosives means ships would be safer, said Elizabeth D'Andrea, Electromagnetic Railgun Program Manager.
The Navy's goal is to demonstrate a full-capability prototype by 2018.

These are the animations i made in GMax for the presentation of my railgun project, i figured i might as well show them off here.
It starts with a representation of a magnetic field around a wire, a demonstration of the Lorentz effect, and how a railgun combines these to propel a projectile (the + and - minus are switched, sorry). The magnetic field is represented by a green arrow, the direction of current is blue, and force is red.
The next animation shows how the rails are also forced apart by the Lorentz force.
Next i explain how i built the railgun, the injector system, and the capacitor bank.
after that i show some cool photos and videos of tests, as well as some results of the experiment (the green round thing is a simulation of the magnetic field around the rails).
The last part shows images of the rails after more or less 10 shots, there is some rail erosion, but it is very limited because of the low voltage and it only affects the first few centimeters of the rails. I dont know for sure what the black stuff is, it could either be aluminium oxide from the plasma, of soot from the burnt plexiglass enclosure.
Some more interesting results:
-the length of the discharge is 0.0002 seconds
-the average plasma exaust velocity is 1000 m/s
-the projectile experiences an initial force of approximately 100N
-the projectile weighs 40µg
-this means that the projectile accelerates at 2500000m/s²

Según Wikipedia el Arma de Raíles (Cañon Magnético o RailGun en inglés) es un arma electromagnética que dispara pequeños proyectiles metálicos a alta velocidad.
El funcionamiento del railgun se basa en el principio de repulsión-atracción que se observa al acercar un objeto ferromagnético a un campo magnético de alta potencia ( Ecuación de la Fuerza de Lorentz). Se usan varios condensadores que almacenan una carga de unos 5000 microfaradios cada uno, acumulando una energía total de unos 25 Kilojulios.
Cuando están completamente cargados, son "vaciados" en un circuito eléctrico compuesto por un cable enroscado a lo largo de dos raíles metálicos (de ahí el nombre del dispositivo) perfectamente paralelos, de forma que creen el mismo efecto (a nivel magnético) que una bobina. Debido a este enroscamiento, el campo magnético de cada uno de los raíles provoca una potente fuerza de repulsión que choca con el campo del otro raíl. Al ser idénticos en todos los aspectos (no hay uno más potente que otro), la fuerza que genera el primero en dirección al segundo queda anulada por la propia fuerza del segundo hacia el primero, y toda la fuerza que puede generar el campo se desvía hacia los bordes de ambos raíles.
Cuando los condensadores se descargan repentinamente, se genera un campo electromagnético extremadamente potente cuya fuerza va desde uno de los extremos de los raíles hacia el otro. Si se coloca un pequeño proyectil metálico entre los 2 rieles, la fuerza magnética del campo lo propulsa a velocidades muy elevadas. Al generar el campo magnético de forma casi instantánea el proyectil sufre una aceleración muy alta en un espacio de tiempo muy breve, dotándolo de un poder de penetración extremadamente alto.
