El mundo está dividido en tres grandes bloques: Oceania, Eurasia y Estasia que están en guerra continua. La acción se sitúa en Oceanía, gobernada por el Partido que ha creado tres paradigmas para perpetuar su poder : "La Guerra es la Paz, La Libertad es la esclavitud, La Ignorancia es la Fuerza". La historia de la humanidad queda dividida en dos épocas, la anterior al partido y la presente. Desde la creación del Partido toda la historia ha sido destruida, cambiada, los dioses sustituidos por El Gran Hermano creador de la revolución, mientras que los enemigos son perseguidos y detenidos por la Policía de Pensamiento.
En la escena seleccionada un funcionario del Ministerio de la Verdad, Wiston Smith (John Hurt), realiza su labor diaria de revisar, seleccionar y reescribir los documentos de los archivos. Su cometido es cambiar los hechos históricos de individuos indeseados que en su momento fueron eliminados -el nombre del individuo desaparecía de los documentos y su paso por la vida quedaba anulado como si jamás hubiera existido. Era el modo de ofrecer una historia limpia de toda información que no sea favorable a la ideología y a la figura del Estado.
