Deslizamos então para lá de Plutão, dos anéis de Urano, do majestoso sistema de saturno, e da luminosidade do lado noturno de Júpiter. Penetrando nas nuvens da Terra, encontramo-nos no Egito, onde Eratóstenes pela primeira vez mediu a Terra. O Dr. Sagan mostra-nos como isso foi feito.
A Biblioteca de Alexandria, berço da aprendizagem da Antiguidade, ressuscita em toda a sua glória - para ilustrar a fragilidade do conhecimento. É então que, para nos fazer compreender a enormidade do tempo que passou desde o Big bang até hoje, Sagan nos apresenta o "Calendário Cósmico".
