Micro and nanotechnologies are revolutionising medicine
'Almost invisible' tools are being developed by European researchers to discover diseases earlier and to treat patients better. The miniaturisation of instruments to micro and nano dimensions promises to make our future lives safer and cleaner. A team of European researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Technologies Institute near Saarbruecken is using nanotechnology to improve diagnostic capabilities. In the "Adonis"-project, nano-sized gold particles are used to detect prostate cancer cells at an early stage. Auteur : eutube Tags:eutube EU commission European nanotechnologies research |

Nanosciences and nanotechnologies represent a formidable challenge for the research community and industry. World-class infrastructure, new fundamental knowledge, novel equipment for characterisation and manufacturing, multi-disciplinary education and training for innovative and creative engineering, and a responsible attitude to societal demands are required. This documentary film provides a glimpse of some of the many activities that are being carried out in Europe in these fast-grozing fields of research and technological development.

| Fighting Cancer with Magnetic Nanoparticles - 140 sec MagForce Nanotechnologies AG is focused on using nanotechnology to fight cancer. Its proprietary system of therapy is based on injecting aminosilane-coated iron oxide nanoparticles into a tumor which has already been localized. These nanoparticles are then subjected to a high-frequency alternating magnetic field, causing them to vibrate and produce heat which then damages or destroys the tumor cells. Depending on the temperature attained within the tumor, the method may be used either as hyperthermia therapy in support of conventional forms of treatment (such as radiation and chemotherapy) or byitself as thermoablation for the direct destruction of tumor cells. This approach, now in clinical trials but not yet commercially available, may be used for many different types of solid tumors, as fundamentally all tumor cells may be damaged or destroyed at a certain temperature.
