Inspiration Irland. Am 1. Oktober 1984 wird die Musik LP "The Unforgettable Fire" von U2 veröffentlicht. Die Produzenten Brian Eno und Daniel Lanois arbeiteten mit der Band im Schloss Slane Castle und den Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin an dem Album.
"Irland without you" ist eine Bildercollage von Lars Schumacher die sich mit dem Entstehen dieser LP auseinandersetzt. Es werden die Orte der Inspiration zu diese Musik besucht. Slane Castel, in dem die Soundtüfteleien entstanden; Motive des Moydrum Castel, Carrigogunnell Castle für das Cover. Auch Stationen in der irischen Hauptstadt Dublin sind mit der Entstehungsgeschichte fest verwurzelt.
The Unforgettable Fire
Benannt und stark beeinflußt durch die gleichnamige Ausstellung im Chicagoer Peace Museum beginnt die Band mit diesem Album ganz gezielt einen neuen Karriereabschnitt. Eno und Lanois sorgen dafür, dass sich die vier mit einer "orchestraleren" Art der Produktion auseinandersetzen. Breit gefächerte Klang- und Soundteppiche machen Songs wie "A Sort Of Homecoming" und den Titeltrack zu fast hymnischen Tracks. Die Band improvisiert viel, was seinen Höhepunkt im live ins Mikro getexteten "Elvis Presley And America" findet. Bonos Texttechnik (von ihm selber "Bongolese" genannt) besteht darin, zur Instrumentalversion eines neuen Songs eine Aneinanderreihung von Worten, die ihm spontan einfallen, ins Mikro zu singen. Bei "Elvis..." wurde ein solch frühes Demo schliesslich für die LP ausgewählt. Aber auch "Promenade" und das Instrumental "4th Of July" sind Ergebnisse von Tüfteleien und Experimenten auf für U2 völlig neuen Soundgebieten. Die Spannbreite des Albums reicht von klassischen "Rockern" wie "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" und "Wire" über treibende Tracks wie "Indian Summer Sky" bis zu dem (wie auch "Pride...") Martin Luther King gewidmeten fast gebeteten "MLK" und dem durch den Drogentod eines Freundes inspirierten "Bad". The Unforgettable Fire ist bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt sicher das vielfältigste Album der Band und öffnet neue Türen in der Bandentwicklung.
Moydrum Castle
Das Moydrum Castle ist auf dem Titelbild des vierten U2 Albums 'The Unforgettable Fire' zu sehen. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Ruine, die in der Nähe von Athlone zu finden ist.
Am 2. Juli 1921 überfielen britische Truppen 3 kleine Farmer in Coosan und brannten ihre Besitztümer nieder. Die IRA entschied sich zu einem Gegenschlag und beschlossen, britischen Symphatisanten dasselbe anzutun. Die Auswahl fiel auf Moydrum weil es seit über 200 Jahren die Quelle britischer Macht war. So kam es, dass am 3. Juli 1921 eine Gruppe von Republikanern das Haus stürmte und Lady Castlemaine und ihren 3 Töchtern 15 Minuten Zeit gab, das Haus zu verlassen. Der 106 Jahre alte Anwesen wurde dann in Brand gesteckt, am nächsten Morgen waren nur mehr die Aussenmauern über, die Reste, die auch heute noch zu sehen sind.
Carrigogunnell Castle
Die ist die Ruine, welche auf der Innenseite des "The Unforgettable Fire" abgebildet ist. Es ist auf vulkanischen Fels gebaut und bietet eine herrlichen Ausblick über das Mündungsgebiet des Shannon. "Carrigogunnell Castle" bedeutet so viel wie "das Schloß der Kerzen".
Der Film entstand in den Jahren 2005 bis 2007 und stieg am Tag der Veröffentlichung auf Platz 8 der YouTube Charts (Auszeichnung)ein.
