This item from a dutch arts programme was shot in 1996 and shows an interview with two well known dutch musicians in the field of Indian Classical music, cellist Saskia de Haas and violinist Lenneke van Staalen. We get a glimpse of their training at the Rotterdam Conservatory as second year students. Saskia and Lenneke explain some aspects of their training, tell about the character of raga music and discuss the differences between learning western music and Indian Classical music.
After finishing her studies in The Netherlands Saskia moved to India. She lives and works in Delhi with her husband Shubhendra Rao, one of India's best sitar players and a famous disciple of Ravi Shankar. Saskia is now an internationally acclaimed player and is making a unique and very impressive effort in promoting and incorporating the cello as a solo instrument in Indian Classical Music. She performs and tours worldwide as a soloist and also together with her husband. Saskia and Shubhendra perform North-Indian raga music and they also compose and play raga-based music that integrates and fuses elements of Western Classical music and a variety of (mostly) European traditional musics. Lenneke lives and works in Holland, but she has received much of her training in India, while visiting the country on a regular basis. She teaches Indian Classical Music at the Rotterdam Conservatory and has a succesfull career as a performer in the field of Indian classical music and also in many world music projects, fusing Indian classical music with other genres of music.
Also featured in this video is world famous flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia who has been teaching many years at the renowned world music department of the Rotterdam Conservatory.
