柴田理森（豊川悦司）は長野にある寂れた田舎の駅員。訳あって駅長である父・憲史（前田吟）と二人暮らし。地元の食堂の娘、秋本美紀子（永作博美）は理森と幼なじみ。男所帯の食堂におかずを持ってきては理森と軽口を叩き合うが・ひそかに理森に想いを寄せていた。
ある日、この小さな町に都会的な母親が降り立った。母の町村かほり（夏川結衣）はこの町の権力者・綿貫純一朗（仲谷昇）の息子、広務（佐野史郎）に熱望されて再婚、娘の誌織を連れてこの町で暮らすことになったのだが、慣れない田舎暮らしと、かほりの過去をよく思わない冷たい義父に、息の詰まるような毎日を送っていた。
誌織は星の好きな少女で、駅での待ち時間で理森と言葉を交わすようになり、「駅長さん」と呼んで理森を慕う。ある日、理森は子供時代の想い出の場所、乙女が原を訪れるが、そこに星を見に誌織がやってきた。流れ星が流れる。「何もお願いがないのは幸せって事でしょ？」という誌織に寂しさを見る理森。この子の母親はどんな人なのか、と興味をもつ。
いつものように母の迎えを待つ誌織。夕立が降る中、かほりの赤い車が駅に近づく...。

６年前、柴田理森（豊川悦司）は町村かほり（夏川結衣）とその娘・誌織（鈴木杏）を連れて、北へと逃避行した。かほりの夫、綿貫広務（佐野史郎）が執拗に３人を追い、北海道で追い詰めた。そして忌まわしい事件が。すべては自分の責任と考える理森は、何も言わずに刑務所に入った。
あれから６年。仮出所となった理森が清澄の町に戻ってきた。理森に思いをよせる幼なじみ、秋本美紀子（永作博美）が、家を掃除するなど環境を整えて彼の帰りを待っていた。理森はこの後下関で働くことが決まっていた。
そしてもう一人、理森の帰りを待っていた人がいた。15歳になった誌織（山田麻衣子）だった。ハーモニカの音に６年前を思い出す理森。「あんたに会いたかった。どうしてあんなことになったのか、聞きたかった」と切りつけるような質問が飛んでくる。成長した誌織の悲しみを見るにつけ、理森は６年では短かった、傷はまだたくさんあった、と痛感させられる。
一方広務は、市長選を控え、大忙し。理森が帰ってきたことを知り、また誌織が理森に事件の事を聞き出そうとつきまとうことを心配し、早くこの町から出ていくよう冷たく言い放つ。しかし理森の幼なじみで理森を気づかう秋本美紀子には、「６年待った男がまた去ってしまうのは辛いだろう」と心境を察する。
傷ついた誌織に動揺を見せた理森に、美紀子は32年の想いのたけをぶつける...。
