Translation:
Montserrat Caballé: "I only wanted to say, that, when I get this award in Germany from the "Deutsche Phonoakademie" it is something very special for me. You all know, as I always said, that I was in Basel as a beginner for three years, but then in Germany I really developped and learned so much in this country, so much, that I could go to the big wide world. But the "ground", the basis for my singing, for my musicality and for my - let us say - "correctness" was here in Germany where I learned it. That's because I'm always saying - and my spanish consul please may not be angry at me -, but I was born in Spain, but in the musical way I was born in Germany. And I'll never forget this and never be able to thank enough for this."
Maria Furtwängler: "The 6th september of this year a piece of news was spread, that moved many people deeply: The 6th september died Luciano Pavarotti, one of the greatest tenors we were allowed to experience, the "Big P" how he was called affectionately. In the course of this award we want to take occasion to remember this great artist and I believe Montserrat has made many important, personal experiences and wants to say something about Pavarotti."
Montserrat Caballé: "I only want to say, that Luciano was for me not only the tenor on stage, but also a very good colleague, a good human being ... and also his generosity to children and everything. One thing that stayed in my heart is his humanitarian engagement for the human being. He didn't want to show this. He was shy. In my memory I feel a big gratitude and I think we all feel it, because he gave something to the opera that opera didn't have for a long time: he was a normal human being. And normal human beings like him or like Juan Diego Flórez today and also many other of course ... but this greatness of humanity doesn't exist often in the world of opera."
