This video depicts the history of the IWGP 3rd Generation Belt and the matches and events leading up to the Double Title Match.
Full Story:
First awarded to then champion Kazuyuki Fujita in 2005. G1 Climax winner Masahiro Chono feels he should be the first to hold the belt. Out came former WWE superstar Brock Lesnar to make this match the first ever three-way match for the IWGP Heavyweight Champion at the Tokyo Dome. Brock Lesnar became champion by pinning Chono after his move, the Verdict. Brock Lesnar would soon become a destructive force destroy every challenge New Japan Pro Wrestling threw at him. On the list of Lesnar's victims were: Manabu Nakanishi, Yuji Nagata, Shinsuke Nakamura, Riki Choshu, Akebono, and Giant Bernard. Hiroshi Tanahashi is rumored to be the next challenger and have a good chance of winning the title. One interviewer hinted a possible change to an irate Lesnar. Lesnar would soon leave NJPW after hearing the news that he was booked to put over Tanahashi as new champion. Lesnar would also leave for the payment demands and request to work even lesser dates. Note: Lesnar only shows up at least once a month and don't tour with the company. Due to Lesnar's departure, New Japan has no choice but to strip Lesnar of the title even though Lesnar would take the belt with him. New Japan would announce his departure as "visa issues."
Without a champion, New Japan would an IWGP Title Tournament to declare the vacant IWGP Heavyweight Champion. As expected, Tanahashi would defeat Giant Bernard in the finals to become the new champion. Months later, New Japan has struck a deal with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and manage to bring in Kurt Angle to team with Nagata against Giant Bernard and Travis Tomko. New Japan officials were impressed with Angle's performance and hoped for more appearances from him. Yuji Nagata would win the New Japan Cup and would then on defeat Tanahashi for the IWGP Title. Tanahashi would then on win the 2007 G1 Climax and won his title back from Nagata.
Meanwhile, Antonio Inoki has opened a new startup promotion called Inoki Genome Federation IGF. Simon Inoki would bring in Kurt Angle to face Lesnar in the main event. Angle would defeat Lesnar to become the new 3rd Belt holder. This would lead to a debate war between Puro Fans and TNA sheep concerning who is the real IWGP Champion. Brock Lesnar would later pursue MMA by showing up at K-1 in Las Vegas and later competing in UFC.) New Japan took advantage of their relationship with TNA and announced a NJPW vs. TNA Wrestle Kingdom Tokyo Dome show in order to get their belt back. Nagata was the first to step up and try to be the hero of the company. Angle was too much for Nagata causing Nagata to submit. The true main event shows New Japan's young aces, once again, headlining the Tokyo Dome this time for the IWGP Heavyweight Title. Like their epic encounter for the U-30 title in 2005, three years later, Nakamura once again would win the title off of Tanahashi in the Tokyo Dome main event. This will soon setup for a title unification match at the Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugihan Sumo Hall with Nakamura and Angle. In what could be New Japan's most important event, Nakamura did the impossible and made Kurt Angle tap out to the Jujigatame and became the Undisputed, or Unified, IWGP Heavyweight Champion.
