Iran releases footage of an incident in the Strait of Hormuz, following U.S. allegations that Iranian boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships on January 6.
The move comes a day after Iran's parliament speaker dismissed U.S. accusations that Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats threatened the U.S. ships as part of a "propaganda campaign" against the Islamic state.
Iran has described the contact in the Gulf as "routine", but U.S. President George W. Bush, speaking ahead of a Middle East trip on Tuesday, said Iran committed "a provocative act."
The U.S. has also released a video of the weekend encounter, including a recording of what it said was the exchange between the two sides.
Iran rejected the footage as fake and accused Washington of trying to stir up tension in the region. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said the images were archive pictures.

Brigadier General Ali Fadavi, an IRGC senior official, has said that the US vessels' registration numbers had been unreadable to the Iranian guards.
He added that the guards approached the US ships only to examine the numbers.
The Iranian footage also includes the original radio communication between the Iranian guards and the US warship.

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Three U.S. Navy vessels took evasive actions after five Iranian boats buzzed the ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz Jan. 6, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said Jan. 7.
Speaking to Pentagon reporters, Whitman called the Iranian provocation "a serious incident." The fast Iranian boats approached at "distances and speed that showed reckless, dangerous and potentially hostile intent," he said.
The incident lasted about 15 to 20 minutes, he said. The Navy ships were going into the Persian Gulf when the Iranian boats confronted them.
"Small, Iranian fast boats made some aggressive maneuvers against our vessels and indicated some hostile intent," Whitman said. "This required our vessels to issue warnings and conduct some evasive maneuvers. The U.S. Navy vessels were prepared to take appropriate actions, but there was no engagement of the vessels."
He said the speed of the Iranian boats and their distance from the U.S. Navy vessels demonstrated potentially hostile intent. Bridge-to-bridge radio communications between the Iranian vessels and the U.S. Navy ships reinforced this impression, he said.
The U.S. ships were operating in international waters within the Strait of Hormuz and followed all appropriate protocols, Whitman said. The U.S. Navy ships are USS Port Royal (CG 73), USS Hopper (DDG 70) and USS Ingraham (FFG 61).
U.S. warships will take all the precautions needed to safely transit the open waters of the strait, the Pentagon spokesman said.
"This is reckless and dangerous behavior on the part of the Iranian vessels, and it should cease immediately," Whitman added.
Typically, small boats such as these are under command of Iranian Revolutionary Guards, U.S. Navy officials said.
All U.S. warships transiting the open seas are prepared to take action should their ship or crews be threatened, Whitman noted. The U.S. ships "did take appropriate action in terms of maneuvering and communicating, and were prepared to take further action if necessary," he said.
The Defense Department will work with White House and State Department officials to come up with the appropriate way to address the incident with the Iranian government, Whitman said.
Iranian boats took 15 British sailors engaged in United Nations-sanctioned operations in the northern Persian Gulf on March 23.

On January 6, 2008, there was a 'stand-off' between five patrol boats from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps [IRGC] and three U.S. Navy warships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Both sides released video of the encounter. The video released by the American military was predictably full of menace and included a sinister voice, which came over the radio and threatened the U.S. vessels: "I am coming to you. You will explode in a couple of minutes."
The Iranian video was slightly more benign and showed a member of the IRGC naval patrol communicating over the radio with the U.S. warships. However, the voice of this radio operator sounds nothing like the voice that issued the threat in the American video, and it has since been speculated that the 'threatening' transmission might possibly originated from another ship in the region. But if it wasn't the Iranians, then who was it? Who would have issued this threat in the midst of a potentially dangerous encounter? And why?

IRGC Video: Strait of Hormuz Incident
Iran releases the video of Sunday's maritime identification check in the Persian Gulf waters involving Iranian boats and US warships.
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says the US-released footage of the incident is fabricated and the audio of it is fake.
Brigadier General Ali Fadavi, an IRGC senior official, has said that the US vessels' registration numbers had been unreadable to the Iranian guards.
He added that the guards approached the US ships only to examine the numbers.
The Iranian footage also includes the original radio communication between the Iranian guards and the US warship.

The New York Times noted on Wednesday that the US-released audio includes no ambient noise of the kind that might be expected if the broadcast had come from on one of the speedboats.
Pentagon officials said the voice heard in the video clip is not directly traceable to the Iranian military, but could still have come from a high quality radio on one of the small boats, the paper reported.
