Timmy Thomas - Funky Me [Glades] - 179 sec
Timmy Thomas - Funky Me b/w "Why Can't We Live Together" GLADES 1972 Timmy Thomas (born 13 November 1944, in Evansville, Indiana) is an American R&B singer, keyboardist, songwriter, and record producer, best known for the hit song, "Why Can't We Live Together?" Thomas first attracted interest for his work as an accompanist with Donald Byrd and Cannonball Adderley, before working as a session musician in Memphis, Tennessee, and releasing singles on Goldwax Records. He had little solo success until he moved to Glades Records in Miami, Florida, and in late 1972 released "Why Can't We Live Together?". This was a memorable and heartfelt message song distinguished by its soulful organ, stripped-down production with a simple drum machine, and impassioned vocals. The record topped the Billboard R&B charts, made the top three in the Billboard Hot 100, and Top Ten in many other countries including the UK. ______________ www.last.fm ______________

Ovations - Don't Break Your Promise [Sounds of Memphis] - 173 sec
The Ovations comprised of: Louis Williams Jnr. (lead singer) (b. 24th February, 1941, Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.A. d. 13th October 2002, Methodist Healthcare University Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.A.) Rochester Neal (vocals) Bill Davis (vocals) Nathan (Pedro) Lewis (vocals) (b. 30th July 1943) and Quincy Billops, Jr. (vocals) A dispute over royalties led to the Ovations exiting Goldwax. Dan Greer brought them to the MGM-affiliated Sounds of Memphis imprint, where they scored a # 19 R & B hit with "Touching Me" in mid-1972. They nailed their biggest hit of all (# 7 R & B and # 56 pop) for MGM proper in the autumn of '73 with a Greer-produced remake of Cooke's "Having A Party." However, Nathan and Billy weren't "Having A Party"; Louis Williams Jr. was instead backed by anonymous session vocalists. In retrospect, the group probably could have been better prepared on the business front. "We had show, but no business, and the name of the thing is show business," admits Nathan Lewis. --------------------------------------- Words c/o soulwalking.co.uk ---------------------------------------
