Exactly 50 years ago I did my own Rhine journey. A school friend and I cycled through Belgium to Cologne and thence all the way to Switzerland at Schaffhausen, then Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux, Lausanne. Don't ask how we got home!
Thus I feel qualified to upload this piece ... if not musically, then because we visited every castle on route - and even stayed in one or two (Bacharach, Ehrenbreitstein)! Marvellous!

Watched the wonderful Karita Mattila doing this. Was keen to understand better what this music was saying. Schwarzkopf's recording is offered here with German and English subtitles. The English translation is not word-for-word. Instead, I tried to catch the scansion and some of the poetic imagery in Wagner's phrases. If any German speaker can suggest a correction or two, I will be most grateful.
