Increasing hope and inevitable disappointment shape the course of three 20th century Bulgarian political upheavals. The story is told by representatives of two generations, inhabiting the visual space around the Georgi Dimitrov Mausoleum, a monument to Bulgaria's first communist dictator. Despite three failed attempts by Bulgaria's anti-Communist rulers to blast the mausoleum into history, the Mausoleum remains standing. The oblique and macabre symbol provokes the viewer to question his or her assumptions about themes commonly taken for granted: freedom and responsibility, democracy, hope and disappointment. It's precisely 30 years since Georgi Markov's death. Georgi Markov was one of the few open critics of Bulgarian Communism, a writer and a broadcaster, a BBC journalist.
On 7 September 1978, on Waterloo Bridge, just across from Bush House, Georgi Markov's desk at the BBC World Service, he was jabbed in the thigh by a man holding an umbrella. The man apologized and walked away.
Markov later would tell doctors that the man had spoken with a foreign accent. He recalled feeling a stinging pain from where he had been hit by the stranger. Back at work in Bush House, Markov noticed that a small red swelling had formed and the pain from being jabbed had not gone away. He told his close friend and colleague at the BBC, Teo Lirkoff, about this incident.
That evening Georgi Markov developed a high fever and was admitted to a hospital where he died three days later, on 11 September 1978, at the age of 49.
British police ordered a thorough autopsy of Georgi Markov's body. The forensic pathologists discovered a spherical metal pellet the size of a pin-head, containing traces of highly toxic ricin.
An acclaimed writer in the 1960s, Georgi Markov was leading a very privileged life in Bulgaria and knew many Communist leaders personally. After 1968 he was becoming more outspoken against the system; one of his novels was banned, and, just as a new play was about to be stopped, in 1969 Georgi Markov left Bulgaria.
He first went to Italy, where his brother lived, in 1971 he came to Britain, where he joined the BBC's Bulgarian Service. In 1974, his play "The Archangel Michael" -- his first after coming to the England - won an award at the Edinburgh Festival. Georgi Markov regarded this as a breakthrough as a writer in the West.
Between 1975 and 1978 Markov worked on his analysis of life in Communist Bulgaria. His pieces were broadcast weekly from Munich on Radio "Free Europe" Their criticism towards Bulgaria's Communists and personally towards the Party leader for 35 years, Todor Zhivkov, made Georgi Markov one of the most hated enemies of the regime. The 7th September 1978, when he was attacked, was the birthday of Bulgaria's, Todor Zhivkov. No one has yet been charged with the murder of Georgi Markov.
According to Bulgarian secret-service files, it was an agent with the code-name "Piccadilly", who assassinated Georgi Markov: an Italian-born Danish citizen, named as Francesco Gullino. In a classic of "Cold War" subterfuge, in 1971 Gullino is arrested by Bulgarian customs officials carrying drugs. Soon he cuts a deal with the Bulgarian secret services and is free, working for them. They later resettle him in Denmark under the cover of an antique dealer, often crisscrossing the Iron Curtain in his Austrian-registered caravan.
Now de-classified Bulgarian secret files show details of training and payments to "Piccadilly", and of the close links between the Bulgarian secret services and the Soviet KGB over the murder. Shortly before the Markov murder, he had a rare face-to-face meeting with the head of Bulgaria's foreign intelligence, General Vasil Kotsev. Gullino returns to Bulgaria shortly after the murder, to receive a medal
In February 1993 Francesco Gullino was questioned in Copenhagen by British and Danish detectives. He admitted espionage but denied any involvement in the killing of Georgi Markov. Gullino was released and, aware that his clock was ticking, left Denmark in a hurry. In the summer of 1993 he gave a brisk phone interview to Radio "Free Europe", from an unidentified location, believed to be Hungary.
Francesco Gullino's location remains unknown to the public. The investigation in the UK, where the crime was committed, will continue until the case is resolved.
