Contemporary philosopher Geoffrey Warnock discusses the philosophy of anti-empiricist Immanuel Kant, and his view that activities and powers within the mind are the key to knowledge, and that all knowledge is appearance. Knowledge for Kant, is a complex affair, in which knowing is acquired not just through the senses, but through pure concepts of understanding indigenous to the mind. Countering Hume, Kant insists it is the mind, not the senses, which unifies and organizes sensory flow into meaning full definitions of things.

In the 1980's, new learning algorithms for neural networks promised to
solve difficult classification tasks, like speech or object recognition,
by learning many layers of non-linear features. The results were
disappointing for two reasons: There was never enough labeled data to
learn millions of complicated features and the learning was much too slow
in deep neural networks with many layers of features. These problems can
now be overcome by learning one layer of features at a time and by
changing the goal of learning. Instead of trying to predict the labels,
the learning algorithm tries to create a generative model that produces
data which looks just like the unlabeled training data. These new neural
networks outperform other machine learning methods when labeled data is
scarce but unlabeled data is plentiful. An application to very fast
document retrieval will be described.

Geoffrey Hinton received his BA in experimental psychology from Cambridge in
1970 and his PhD in Artificial Intelligence from Edinburgh in 1978. He did
postdoctoral work at Sussex University and the University of California San
Diego and spent five years as a faculty member in the Computer Science
department at Carnegie-Mellon University. He then became a fellow of the
Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and moved to the Department of
Computer Science at the University of Toronto. He spent three years from 1998
until 2001 setting up the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at University
College London and then returned to the University of Toronto where he is a
University Professor. He holds a Canada Research Chair in Machine Learning. He
is the director of the program on "Neural Computation and Adaptive Perception"
which is funded by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.
Geoffrey Hinton is a fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Canada,
and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. He is an
honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a
former president of the Cognitive Science Society. He received an honorary
doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in 2001. He was awarded the first
David E. Rumelhart prize (2001), the IJCAI award for research excellence
(2005), the IEEE Neural Network Pioneer award (1998) and the ITAC/NSERC award
for contributions to information technology (1992).
A simple introduction to Geoffrey Hinton's research can be found in his
articles in Scientific American in September 1992 and October 1993. He
investigates ways of using neural networks for learning, memory, perception and
symbol processing and has over 200 publications in these areas. He was one of
the researchers who introduced the back-propagation algorithm that has been
widely used for practical applications. His other contributions to neural
network research include Boltzmann machines, distributed representations,
time-delay neural nets, mixtures of experts, Helmholtz machines and products of
experts. His current main interest is in unsupervised learning procedures
for neural networks with rich sensory input.

The Musicians@Google program was thrilled to welcome acclaimed musician Wynton Marsalis and Geoffrey Ward to Google's New York office to discuss their new book "Moving to Higher Ground: How Jazz Can Change Your Life,". The event was moderated by with Google's own Jim Lecinski.
Wynton Marsalis is an acclaimed musician, bandleader, educator, composer and author. He is the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Music Director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
To date, Marsalis has won 9 Grammy Awards, in both the jazz and classical categories, and is the only artist to have won Grammy Awards in five consecutive years, from 1983 to 1987. In 1987, Marsalis' oratorio on slavery and freedom, "Blood on the Fields," became the first and only jazz composition to win the Pulitzer Prize in music.
Geoffrey C. Ward, a historian, screenwriter, and former editor of American Heritage, is the author of thirteen books, including "Jazz: A History of America's Music" and "A First-Class Temperament", which won the 1989 National Critics Circle Award.

Immediately recognizable as the 7-Up, "Uncola man", his distinctive bass voice, heavy accent and hearty laugh are legendary. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, Geoffrey came to New York City in 1952. Holder married dancer, choreographer and actress, Carmine DeLavallade in June of 1955. They met when they were both were in the Broadway cast of "Flower Drum Song". They live happily in New York City and have one son, Leo Anthony Lamont.

I first met Geoffrey in 1975 at a very crowded gallery opening of his work somewhere on Madison Avenue in NYC. Those were the days when video cameras had very bright lights. During the entire event that camera followed Geoffrey (who was the tallest person in the room) everywhere. I sensed his shyness and wondered if he needed a break. I asked him if he would like to sit and chat. Relieved, to be out of the spotlight, he said, "I'D LIKE THAT", and we became immediate friends. Geoffrey was, FAMOUS AT STUDIO 54. With his height, you could recognize him from anywhere in the room and everyone loved him. Today, whenever I'm out in the city with Geoffrey total strangers come up and give him a hug. It's a little startling, especially for him. I'm 5'10" and they always ask if I'm his bodyguard. I've gotten used to it; after all, they're just trying to get HIS attention.
He's is a wonderful and special man, mentor and a really inspirational friend. When you're with Geoffrey, one minute you're walking down Broadway and suddenly find yourself, "SKIPPING ON DOWN, THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD." AMAZING!!! Surprised, well yeah, but after all he is the man who created and directed The Broadway Musical, "THE WIZ". I'm sure you'll agree Geoffrey Holder is "MARVELOUS, ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS... HA, HA, HA, HA!"
