Most people know about Genie or at least have learned about her briefly in school. She was found in the early 70s at age thirteen, having spent most of her life in almost total isolation. I made this video using parts of actual footage of her as she progressed, and my point is really to try to bring attention to what a tragedy her life was. Not only was she severely abused by her family, but after making progress with her doctors and therapists she was returned to her mother to live in the same house she'd been abused in. After her mother realized she couldn't care for her, Genie was placed in foster care and group homes, where she regressed. Worst of all, her mother faught to make sure that the doctors and therapists that cared so deeply for her (and who had become like parents to her) were not able to see her anymore.
The song I used is Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees", which may seem out of place, but bear with me: Genie had an obsession with collecting anything plastic. She loved playing with and organizing plastic objects. I know the song isn't really about that, but every time I hear it I think about her and the comfort she got from her plastic collections.
This is a story I think everyone needs to know about, not just because she taught us about development and language but because we were unable to save her from further abuse. | BBC Horizon - Genie (deprived girl) Part 1 - 318 sec
This is from a 1994 documentary about the case of a young girl found in Los Angeles, having been deprived of language, or any parental care, for 12 years.
There was a feature film about the case, called Mockingbird Don't Sing'. Genie was born around 1957, and so would be about 50 years old today.

On the surface, a playful attempt to perform feats ascribed to the genies and flying carpets of ancient myth, Zero Genie was conceived as a response to the structure and history of the space program over the last 50 years.
Despite the vast expense of space exploration and its first world bias,
for millennia people have been traveling to the outermost regions of the cosmos through shamanistic practices. Can we deride their experiences as being any less valid, any less real than those of astronauts and cosmonauts ? In the context of the persistent conspiracy theories questioning whether the Americans actually ever did land on the moon, which propose that the whole mission was a charade acted out in a film studio, the question as to what is real and what is not becomes ever more pertinent.
The artists, Ansuman Biswas and Jem Finer, dressed themselves in genie costumes: turbans, be jeweled waistcoats, baggy satin trousers and gold curly toed shoes. In the belly of the Soviet troop carrier, they attempted to fly carpets, smoke a hookah, play shawms, to evoke the mythical magic of the genie, to travel the spaceways on a shoestring.
