Will Wright and Brian Eno on "Playing with Time."
In a dazzling duet Will Wright and Brian Eno give an intense clinic on the joys and techniques of "generative" creation.
Back in the 1970s both speakers got hooked by cellular automata such as Conway's "Game of Life," where just a few simple rules could unleash profoundly unpredictable and infinitely varied dynamic patterns. Cellular automata were the secret ingredient of Wright's genre-busting computer game "SimCity" in 1989. Eno was additionally inspired by Steve Reich's "It's Gonna Rain," in which two identical 1.8 second tape loops beat against each other out of phase for a riveting 20 minutes. That idea led to Eno's "Music for Airports" (1978), and the genre he named "ambient music" was born.

| Generative Music - Cellular automata and blip blops - 571 sec [ UPDATE!! for higher quality sound, watch this here: http://www.vimeo.com/931182 ]
This is a sample output of something I've been working on lately. A somewhat intelligent cellular automata system that I developed with some atari2600 style sonification.
Poor figure that you see at the beginning triggers a relatively complex cellular life system(which is based on conway's rules but it's not ahistoric and can switch rules on the fly depending on the situation) and I've done some work to sonify the life with atari2600 sounds. I have no control over the system once it is started, and it dies by itself.
Software used:
Processing connected to SuperCollider via osc_p5 library and the great p5_sc library, and I used the Atari2600 UGen by Fredrik Olofsson, all custom software.
It is actually in stereo but Youtube bastardizes the content by converting everything to mono. If anyone is interested in the original, i can send links. Auteur : noissez Tags: generative music processing supercollider cellular automata chaos order atari 2600 sonification visualisation |

| generative art from neural networks - 122 sec Jonathan McCabe's artificially evolved systems art
"The patterns are made by repeated foldings, rotations and shifts, and then each point is coloured depending on its positions during the operation. A process of artificial evolution was employed to develop the final images, involving repeated variation, selection and "cross breeding" of the recipes used to generate the images."

| bugworld -- a generative vermin installation - 167 sec bugworld is an interactive installation that lets people play god. More precisely, they become the god of a world inhabited by bugs. Through a very simple interface, the user could influence parameters such as speed, interest or field of vision. Each bug has a set of »genes« which it passes on to its children. Those genes are conveyed visually through different sets of bodies and legs.
The installation has been shown at the exhibition »Für den Fall« in Vienna and Graz.

| Generative Drums in Pure Data - 126 sec This is my first (working at least) patch in pure data. It is a generative patch, meaning that I haven't done any sequencing whatsoever - the program is literally making it up as it goes along. I do a bit of tweaking with a midi-controller in the video, to control it to some degree. I know nothing at all about programming, please keep that in mind.
Sorry about the sound quality, im recording by running the speaker output into the mic input.
EDIT: The patch is now available for download here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/72092876/markov_drums_2.pd.html
As it is rapidshare, it may be removed after 90 days of no downloads. Let me know, and I'll put it back up. All I ask is that if you use it, please credit me as Ben Levitan or Chernobyl2, and let me know.
Enjoy. Auteur : theapc Tags: Pure Data PD electronic music generative drums midi Axiom m-audio autechre algorithm algorithmic max/msp max msp |

| Owl Project: Sound Lathe workshop, Generative Performance - 128 sec From 2005
Sound Lathe is a new piece of work by the Owl Project that explores of the sonic properties of woodwork. The Sound Lathe produces audio data, saw dust, noise and wood chippings. With this human powered machine, turned spindles are shaped into complex sounds such as tones, glitches and beats.
We will create an unique installed durational performance in the form of a furniture workshop. Using our unique hand-crafted technological tools, we will make dynamic audio through chopping, sawing and lathing.
The Sound Lathe produces audio data, saw dust, noise and wood chippings. With this human powered machine, turned spindles are shaped into complex sounds such as tones, glitches and beats. Unlike many electronic instruments, the Sound Lathe produces a unique wooden object at the end of each performance. This object serves as a memory of the performance, slightly faulty and incomplete as it represents the conclusion rather than an accurate recording of the process.
Using the Sound Lathe and other unique hand-crafted technologies, we propose to use local wood to create a "self-build furniture pack", complete with Ikea style graphic instructions and archival audio CD's.
We question the mythical technotopian dream represented by flat-pack furniture.
