Gellért Thermal Baths and Swimming Pool, also called Gellért fürdő or Gellért Baths, is one of the most beautiful and elegant baths in Budapest, built between 1912 and 1918 in the (Secession) Art Nouveau style. They were damaged during World War II, but then rebuilt. References to healing waters in this location are found from as early as the 13th century. A hospital as located on this site during the Middle Ages. During the reign of the Ottoman Empire, baths were also built on this particular site.
The Gellért Baths complex includes thermal baths, which are small pools containing water from Gellért hill's mineral hot springs. The water contains calcium, magnesium, hydrocarbonate, alkalis, chloride, sulfate, and fluoride. There are two different thermal baths, according to the signs on the walls of the baths, one is around 36°C and the other around 38°C. The thermal baths are decorated beautifully with mosaic tiles. The complex also includes saunas and plunge pools (segregated by gender), an open-air swimming pool which can create artificial waves every ten minutes and an effervescent swimming pool. Masseuse services are available. Different types of massage are available. Tourists may experience some culture shock when they purchase a regular half hour massage and are escorted into a room with 3 massage beds and are asked to remove all their clothing. The massages given are completely nude, with 3 massages going on in the same room at once. It truly is a cultural experience. Gellért Baths also offer a wide range of medical services, but they must be booked ahead of time.

The Gellért Baths and Hotel were built in 1918, although there had once been Turkish baths on the site, and in the Middle Ages a hospital. In 1927 the Baths were extended to include the wave pool, and the effervescent bath was added in 1934. With its immaculately preserved Art Nouveau interior, including colourful mosaics, marble columns, stained glass windows and statues, this is without doubt the most beautiful bathing complex in Budapest.
The Gellért Baths were an immediate international success, and were even the scene of an early political scandal. In 1931 a visiting black doctor, Dr. Ramon Costello (who happened to be Cuban), was refused to the Baths on the grounds there were some white American visitors there, and, since there was still racial segregation in America, they objected to his presence. Costello took the matter to the City Council, and they found in his favour.
Water temperatures: 79-100°F (26-38°C). Pools: open air wave pool, thermal pool and children's pool, indoor swimming-effervescent pool and nine medicinal pools.
Water mineral content: thermal water containing nitrates, calcium-magnesium-hydroge n-carbonates and sulphate-chlorides, as well as fluoride ions in significant quantities. Opening times: Weekdays 6.0 a.m. -- 7.0 p.m. Weekends 6.0 a.m. -- 5.0 p.m.

Citadella played a significant role during World War 2 as a military base. The outbreak of the war and later the allied bomb raids on Germany made the Hungarian military government enforce the aerial defence of Budapest and build and air-defence fortress in the Citadella.
Citadella hides a three-level air-raid bunker hosting a waxworks exhibition and an exhibition of historical articles and documents.
The bunker also hosts an impressive archive photo exhibition "Siege of Budapest".
